Week of 3/23

In light of our chapter on the bureaucracy, maybe find some articles dealing with that??

Since taking AP Govt i have figured out that it is never too early to run for election. Even though Obama is a sad little lame duck he still has two years left in office before he is booted. But even so, this man does not seem to care. He is ready to get a head start on things and get him team on things pronto. Also since taking this class i know he has a lot to do before election time and i hope he has a deep enough wallet.

    1. I think it is awesome that he is already starting to campaign for the election. I do agree that he should have a lot of money ready for this. Reading this article, I find that he makes a lot of promises that he can not for sure hold his word too, As we've talked about, They are willing to do anything to get into office. The fact that Obama has two years left, and he is willing to start his campaigning now, is pretty good for him.

    2. It definitely is not too early to be starting to campaign for elections. A lot of candidates have already started campaigning for elections. And even though Obama is in his lame duck session, he has nothing to lose anymore. He can get much more stuff done now that he doesn't have to worry about reelection.

Another possible instances in which one little thing can ruin a career. This guy dropped off the mat. Which i find rather strange because he seemed to be the whole package and have a big political future ahead of him. Was the pressure too much? Did he decide to choose another career? Sometimes you just never really know.

    1. If I had to guess I'd say this guy has in one easy or another become mentally afflicted. Nobody just goes crazy for no reason. It's sad to see such a promising career end due to something that was likely beyond his control.

This article really makes a lot of emotions come up. This article is about a woman's husband, who wants to end his own life, this is do to many years of suffering with Parkinson's Disease. The article says "It was, rather, an example of a courageous man who saw his disability as continuing to lead him to further degradation and loss of dignity." I think that this statement proves a lot. I believe you should be able to end your own life, if you have lost all your dignity and you just can't do it anymore. I understand it would hurt friends and family. But. being a friend or family member i would feel much better knowing that the person is out of pain.

An issue at the Supreme Court is the Clean Air Act. Even though it would cost a lot of money to regulate pollutants, I believe it still needs to be done. One of the most toxic pollutants circling in the air is mercury(which is in the waterways and fish Americans eat.) In 2012 an agency issued a rule ordering coal-fired power plants, to adopt a technology to reduce the pollutants in the air. I believe that this would be a good thing for the power plants to do.

    1. I would agree with you. I do think about the environment very often, but when I do on occasion, I get really scared because it is a real problem. I hope the Supreme Court pulls through with this act. Plus this would create more jobs, it seems, which will help the economy. When it comes to the cost, I'm starting to think that we're going to spend more many on things anyway so why not put it towards things like this too?

      Delete
    2. It makes sense to go through with this and spend the money. It's a huge issue, and one that most people don't realize. It's not an every day thing that people worry about, but it's big enough to spend quite a bit of money on. It could also effect our future, so there's another reason it would be good to attempt to help and fix

      Delete
    3. I agree. The environment is definitely a serious issue. Regulating the pollution would solve a myriad environmental problems. Things like acid rain and too many CO2 emisións would decrease. I think this is a big step for a bettering environment.

    4. I totally agree with you. After all we do only got one earth so it's up to us to take care of it and insure that it's clean. Also we need to regulate these types of thing because if we don't factories will be just using water ver and continue to pollute the earth which is terrible. I think it's good this exist.

In many recent years, bad weather has been the blame for for a "Weaker than expected" Economic performance. The article states an example of this as "The economy was supposed to take off as unemployment fell. There are many underlying weaknesses to the economy. Janett Yellen says " I want to see wage growth before she declares the economic market healthy." Where is the wage growth going to come from?

  6. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/24/opinion/imagine-president-ted-cruz.html?ref=opinion&_r=0
In this article, the author writes about Ted Cruz’s recent announcement that he would run for President in 2016, being the first candidate to officially announce. The author then goes on to poke holes in the Cruz’s announcement speech that he made at Liberty University on Monday, writing that Cruz makes multiple contradictions with things he has said in the past. While I agree with the author that the contents of Ted Cruz’s speech is extremely right-wing, it makes sense that it would be. As we’ve talked about in class, primary campaigns are meant to appeal to political activists who are generally more extreme with their ideological views. If Cruz were to win the Republican nomination next year, it will be interesting to watch how far he will back away from these positions to ones that are more moderate.

    ReplyDelete

    1. That's what I was thinking too. I come from a family that is pretty liberal, (I am too) and they are all completely against Ted Cruz, but I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt as to what his real intentions are for right now. I have politically/mentally prepared my self for the next president to be a Republican, so, if and after he becomes a presidential nominee and moves back to the political center, I might be able to tolerate him.

  7. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2015/03/24/white-house-announces-pause-in-us-troop-drawdown-from-afghanistan/
In this article, the author writes about President Obama’s decision Tuesday to delay the removal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, keeping nearly 10,000 stationed there until the end of the year. Previously, the White House planned on reducing the number of troops in the country to 5,500 by the end of 2015, but after recent talks with the new President of Afghanistan, it was decided for security reasons to keep the extra troops there. I understand that this situation is tough. Many people would suggest the complete removal of all troops from the region, but that would surely end with enemies of the U.S. taking over, as the established governments are simply too weak. On the flipside, it is frustrating to see yet another delay in the removal of troops, especially as the cited reason is the same as it has been for years. For the sake of President Obama’s legacy, he had better make sure his promise of complete removal from Afghanistan comes to fruition before the end of his final term.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I agree with you, and I can't imagine how much more frustrating it is to have a family member over there. It does make sense that the government there would be taken over because of how inefficient and weak they are, but it's been too long. I expected to see them out of there by now, especially since that was one of Obama's promises to the U.S.

  8. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2015/03/24/report-homeland-security-official-used-improper-influence/
In this article, the author writes about a recent scandal involving a former top official of the Department of Homeland Security. Alejandro Mayorkas “improperly intervened on behalf of foreign investors,” apparently soliciting investments that the United States government would not have taken in exchange for American visas. Mayorkas’ actions were reported by subordinates in the bureaucracy that were rewarded with confidentiality for their whistle-blowing. I think this is a very relevant story to the chapter we are currently on. It sounds like Mayorkas was attempting to bypass bureaucratic red tape and was caught. While the author does not make this out to be much of a crime, it is a good example of some of the power those in the bureaucracy can hold.

  9. http://www.cnn.com/2015/03/23/politics/rand-paul-ted-cruz-2016-election/index.html
In this article, the author writes about Rand Paul’s reaction to Ted Cruz’s recent announcement of his bid for the Presidency in the 2016 election. Paul criticizes part of Cruz’s platform, saying that he may be unable to win over anyone but the most loyal to the Republican party, a tactic that could win him the primary, but could fail him in the general election. I tend to agree with Paul here, as I would be concerned that that Cruz could win over any moderates with his current dialogue on political issues. Of course, he would be more likely to become more moderate in his views if he were to win the primaries, but the Republicans need to be careful. Whoever ends up winning the Republican primaries needs to give the party its best shot at winning the general election.

After such a tragic accident recently I believe that this is a great step towards a safer future. Even though no one is exactly sure what happened in the most recent plane crash that happened just a few short days ago, this is a great way for the government to lookout for future flights. Along with preventing more horrible crashes from happening.

Here is a great example of how there is no such thing as a unified government. This cannot occur because each and every partner of person is only looking out for them self. Every politician wants to go higher and higher up on the ladder and you can not really have complete trust for someone in the political world because in the end they are going to do what they think is best whether it coincides with you or not.

This article is very appropriate for this beuracracy chapter. It's talkinng about how most shooting in Philedelphia in 2007 involved a lot of unarmed black men, and most people would say this occured because beuracracy has too much power. They aren't overlooked or checked over enough, with the Ferguson situation finally blowing over, most people are paying more attention to the role of officers and how they really interact with suspects.

This article talks about how officials take money out of funds for a hospital that specifically deal with children who have a sickness. Beauracracy in Angola which is the city, is way over powered. Nurses take medicines and sell it, very corrupt. There needs to be people in charge for things like this, officials sometimes get it through their head that they have control over everything.

This short little article was very opinionated and funny to me. It was talking about the Republican Senate Caucus. They were trying to produce their first budget and, "The budget repeals President Obama’s health reform law (because, of course, it’s working pretty well and helping people who don’t send large checks to the GOP)," along with other things like tax breaks for the wealthy. I'm not even taking something like this seriously, they will never be able to pass it as a law. I just think it is funny how deeply the author feels on the subject. This is one of the reasons I'm glad we have gridlock. It will keep ideas like this at bay, and away from the public hopefully.

  17. When children die of malaria it tends to be due to their brains swelling from severe onset of the disease. A new study found that, and with this information medical treatments against malaria can become improved. The disease malaria is said to have killed 1/3 of all humans to have ever lived. But it's spread by mosquitoes, and has yet to have a cure but there is drugs that help with the disease. Cerebral malaria, which is extremely dangerous is what was detected in this study and found to have extreme swelling in the brain for those who've died.

The outcome of the court's decision was that ecstasy, ketamine and crystal meth were legal in the country. Till legislation changes it. The painting itself is older than one hundred years old. Christies says that post war and contemporary paintings are the ones that gross the most profit. The painting which was provided by a private seller is "Les Femmes D'Alger" version O. Produced in 1955. And was inspired by EugĆØne Delacroix's 1834 orientalist masterpiece "women of Algiers". 20. With the worlds population expected to hit 9 Billion people around 2050 already depleted ground water supplies seem to be running out. The UNs Water Development report claims that 20% of all ground water is already over-exploited, and the problem will only worsen with a growing population. Alarmingly the report claims that by 2020 the world will have only 60% of the water it needs to operate. "Unless the balance between demand and finite supply is restored the world will face an increasingly severe global water deficit." More than ever we need to stop wasting our clean water.

Theres no stopping this, and thats the reality. So the UN should find a way to work around this. I feel like the only way we can fix this is by finding other ways to be able to use salt water into drinking water. This isnt a science blog but i do believe that the government in their efforts try and put more money into that research.

    2. I think this is a very interesting topic to talk about. Mostly because of how some people use water. They can be very wasteful and could careless. While as what these reports are saying that possibly our water supply is decreasing. We need to start conserving a ton of more water. People can be extremely wasteful with water so they need to start being better about not doing this to ensure a good amount of water we need to survive. We should also do more and more research in this.

This article asks the following question: is spending money the way to improve school curriculum? In a way, yes. Money buys materials. Books, supplies, and technology. If you don't have good resources, there isn't a point in the curriculum you're teaching... Without good TEACHERS! To me, you want a teacher that isn't afraid to be more involved with their students, and isn't afraid to care. Some students don't take that stuff to heart, but if they do, it makes them want to learn. That's something money can't buy

    1. I honestly think that we need to pay our teachers more. We need to make the job of teaching more appealing. That way we can get better teachers. We trust them to raise the next generation. So why don't we encourage healthy competition and up the standards of teaching. We shouldn't have our teachers living barley above the poverty line.

Personally, I agree that suspension doesn't do much good for most students, given that some of them just don't care. I also agree that expulsion makes it harder for kids to gain a future worth having. If kids aren't in school, where are they? Education makes things a whole lot easier to earn a living for yourself. What's the message perceived if you're thrown out of school?

There is major speculation the President Obama is cooperating with Iran, an enemy we've had for decades. Many people think that this is a bad thing. They think that the United States will give Iran more weapons, weapons they could turn back on us. Although that is always a possibility, I support using Iran to our advantage. While the United States troops have certainly made leaps and bounds by capturing the top Lord's Resistance Army commander, Dominic Ongwen, we cannot stop here. There is still much at risk. So many countries already hate us and we don't need more of them on that side. It just isn't worth the civilian lives that would be endangered through this action. A more reasonable option would be to send in commando teams to wipe out threats on a more precise basis.

The first ever penny was sold today! It was sold for an unimaginable price of $1.2 million. I think this is crazy and cool at the same time. It's cool because the Pennie is so valuable while as a normal Pennie isn't even worth what it costs to make. The coin is called the birth cent which makes sense since it was the first Pennie.

This is a very interesting article. First of all id like to point out how the president sent over troops to perform airstrikes without asking congress as we all know the president must inform congress that he is doing so and then wait for Congress's approval. So I wonder if by any chance he may get into trouble. But the reason as to why he's doing it is good. He's trying to Afghanistan and Iraq fight back against ISIS. Which in my opinion is magnificent. They need to get rid of that horrid terrorist group. Those countries actually asked for the USAs help so he's doing it to help. And to fight back against ISIS is also very good because the linger they exist the more power they will obtain.
