This seems oddly familiar..... A dispute over the interpretation of the law. Just like in the Risner v. ODNR case. One side states that the law is to be interpreted less strictly and the other believes that it should be taken very literally. Its gone all the way and is up to the courts which way it will go. This is going to change quiet a few things in the U.S. and needs to be decided on carefully.
I wonder if this is being decided now because Obama is leaving office soon and is trying to get all his ducks in a row, if you will before he is booted out. Is the decision being made in the best interest of the United States or Obamas last ditch effort to really go down in history in the presidental sense.
I would tend to disagree with this viewpoint. The first non-white president in United States history (Barack Obama) has, and prepare for the understatement of a lifetime here, already gone down in presidential history. This is being decided because it is believed to be in the best interest of the country, not because Obama needs to get his name on the map any more than it already is.
To be quite honest, I'm surprised this hasn't found its way in the media before now. It's no secret that homosexuality/LGBT is definitely persecuted everywhere. However, I think the way in which they killed the man strikes me as odd. In the news, one would usually see or read that ISIS killed yet another person by beheading. In this article, it states that the man was thrown off of a roof, and "stoned to death." If ISIS is starting to change their killing methods, what can we expect from them later on? What kinds of actions should the government take/use to prevent ISIS from gaining more control?
Obamacare is discussed throughout this article, specifically focusing on the extended oral arguments in the Supreme Court. Little can be pulled from the oral arguments in a prediction of which Justice will agree with who, but Justice Anthony Kennedy makes it particularly clear that he wants to bring an end to Obamacare. He questions the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act. Personally, I would have to agree with Justice Anthony Kennedy. Any thoughts?
http://www.theverge.com/2015/3/5/8154297/hillary-clinton-private-email-scandal In this article, the author writes about the recent scandal involving Hillary Clinton and the use of a private email address. This week, newspapers reported that Clinton used her own private email server while she was Secretary of State, violating rules and showing a disregard for transparency. I agree with the author that there is absolutely no reason for Clinton to have done this. As Secretary of State, she held a tremendous amount of power. While I agree with the author’s position that the lack of transparency is a huge problem, I find a bigger problem with the possible security holes that Clinton opened. Not only did she use a private email address, she used her own servers that likely lacked some of the tools that even a public service such as Google would have. I can find no reason as to why she would conduct business this way, and I see this as a setback for her in her potential candidacy for President in 2016.
I don't think Clinton should have used a private email. I agree that there was no reason for this to be done. The possible security holes that were opened is a good thing to worry about. There was absolutely no reason to do this , i wonder if she was sneaking around trying to do something she know would get her in trouble, but she definitely jeopardized some of her power
January 29th 2013, Chalachew Seyoum was climbing a remote hill known to hold fossils when he looked into the sediment and saw a tooth, which was then connected to a mandible (jawbone). Seyoum who is a graduate student of paleontology had made a discovery of a bone that provides evidence of evolution. The jawbone being 2.8 million years old it's thought to be of homo habilis but it predates other fossils by 400,000 years. The jawbone is shown to be only 200,000 years younger than the more ape like evolutionary steps. Wednesday being the day that scientists of the Arizona university announced that they would begin reconstruction of Homo Habilis, this could have a major effect on the theory of evolution and hold that it is no longer a theory.
I think this really goes to show how much we don't know about the world. Since 1970 we had assumed one thing, when we were really 200,000 years off of our prediction. This poses new questions as to whether we are correct about othe animals and how long they have been on the Earth. Also straying away from land animals it puts questions in my head about how large the ocean is and how much we don't know about it.
When I hear things like this, I automatically think of the different theories of our universe and our planet and other planets around us. All kinds of different opinions and theories were used. There is a ton more to learn about things around us. Think about all other things that are hidden away. It's really amazing how we can interpret things and use resources to find things out like that. Theories are shot down every day. It's crazy to think about.. All the "what ifs"..
After a 9-day trial of former marine Eddie Ray Routh, jury found him guilty of killing Chris Kyle aka The American Sniper. Routh has admitted to killing Kyle and his friend in 2013, but was pleading insanity. Routh a former marine has PTSD, and was undergoing psychosis during the time of the killing. Routh was charged with capital murder, which in Texas is punishable with death penalty.
http://www.latimes.com/opinion/op-ed/la-oe-stephanopoulos-redistricting-lawsuit-20150222-story.html In this article, the author writes about case just added to the Supreme Court docket - Arizona Legislature v. Independent Commission - the case we briefly talked about in class that would decide if independent redistricting commissions are constitutional. As a citizen of California, a state that has an independent commission for this, the author is in support of the independent commissions, acknowledging how much they help to get rid of gerrymandering. I think this case will come down to judicial activism vs. judicial restraint. The Constitution clearly says that things pertaining to the manner of holding elections should be left up to the state legislatures. I envision justices practicing restraint to see this, and vote against the commissions. I tend to agree with the activist approach to this case, as independent commissions clearly make this process more neutral.
The state legislature could just make an independent contractor do it. The white house will just recommend that this be done because of this case. They wouldn't to look bad. However it's not the only option they have. Both sides love gerrymandering when there in power and hate it when there not. There best option would just be to wait it out. In a few weeks the issue will lose its public momentum and the party in power will do what they want. Gerrymandering isn't going anywhere.
I agree with you both on some things. Now that you mention it Josh, I can see how this would come down to restraint or activism. I also favor the independent commissions. I agree with Andrew as well, in saying that gerrymandering is not going anywhere. This would definitely have some affects on it, like limiting it. But gerrymandering I think will still remain pretty common, whatever the outcome. I guess I really don't have a problem with it, but seeing more neutral independent commissions would be nice.
The article is called "The Presidents Weak Privacy Proposal" the link wouldn't paste.
The article is about how Obama is trying to get a Privacy Bill of Rights passed although the article says that this really would only help the industries to share information easier. Not personal information just information that they already share. Although 91% of our population has said that they are scared for the way that the personal information is being taken down in current times, he hasn't taken upon himself to actually try and pass a law to help keep information safe.
http://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/03/06/opinion/the-presidents-weak-privacy-proposal.html Obama should crack down on privacy laws especially with how updated technology is now these day. You see in the media many celebrities dealing with hackers, and this should motivate the president to upgrade on his techniques.
Yes, it would be great if we could get better privacy laws. However there's no good way to inform anything stronger. You would have to create a massive agency will unlimited access to company's computers. All they would have to do is scream first amendment and you'd have a court case. There would a surprise court trial because this involves some of the biggest company's in the world. Even then would just move there servers to another country where it wouldn't have to abide by the law and they would just buy the information from overseas. While I think that there should be restrictions on how much they collect , government would really be able to do anything. These corporations are just to big and powerful.
http://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/03/06/opinion/david-brooks-the-temptation-of-hillary.html Hilary Clinton is obviously trying to up herself in politics and I support what she is trying to do. It's smart to move her business to Wall Street where she would be able to negotiate more and maybe get her point across.
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/06/opinion/indias-careful-plan-for-growth.html?ref=opinion&_r=0 This article is about Indias economy and how they are trying to build it into something better and more stable. It says, "One of the biggest impediments to investment is India’s hodgepodge of laws under which taxes can be collected at state borders" which slows commerce and hurts them. They have many plans to try and build themsleves back up though which will be very interesting.
http://www.cnn.com/2015/03/06/us/mars-ocean-water-study/index.html The findings that NASA found on mars were very significant. It says that the planet mars may have had enough water to cover more than 20% of it surface in the past. This is a big step in learning about living conditions on Mars and it is a big step in science. However another thing that this shows is that Mars has lost a very big amount of water.
i dont know if this is me or does this sound like so goofy? i mean it seems like they blew this out of proportion for the ambassador of kenya having an obtaining a private email account and aside from his public one. Like is he not human enough to have his own personal stuff for his life. Just find it funny how the media and everyone has to be in everyones face and business when it comes to politics and government
I love reading articles on civil rights movements and stuff because it always seems like i learn more and more about it. in this case the story of a man a congressman named John Lewis; a man who fought in Selma for the rights the rightfully deserve. Fighting for the racial problems that are still occurring almost 50 years later.
This article is about, how both political parties are getting close to election time and they need money. The article says " The money bingeing by both parties concides with congress in a republican proposal." Is this the way of saying our next president will be a republican? Many fundraisers and organizations have been started to help with the election of 2016. I really can't wait to find out which political party our next president will represent.
This surprised me.. He WRESTLED with him?! And people freaked out because he was killed. Racism is a touchy subject, but I agree with the author. I think it's dramatized. Everyone knows that it's there. I think if we stop talking about it, it will rid itself and everyone will tolerate each other. No one has to like anyone else, but it would be nice if we weren't separated by things like this
There are three sides to every story, the sides of the two people involved and what really happened. We don't really know what really happened. Some stories say Mike brown was innocent and some draw him out to be innocent. So you can't really believe what this article is saying. secondly, I agree that maybe if we stop talking about racism, it will just go away. There will always be those ignorant people, but we have to ignore them.
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/06/opinion/a-murder-in-bangladesh.html?partner=rssnyt&emc=rss A man named Avijit Roy, a blogger, was murdered in Bangladesh by militants because he was an American citizen and an Atheist. He was expressing views that were different from the Bangladeshi militants and so they killed him. They considered it punishment for being Atheist and revenge for being American. The good thing, however, is that the Bangladeshi authorities have already arrested a suspect and the United States' offer for help with the investigation was accepted. I think it's good to see immediate action after a murder by authorities. It was probably easier in this case, because it wasn't ISIS.
