http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/05/opinion/race-and-voting-rights-in-ferguson.html?ref=opinion&_r=0 The whole Ferguson case has opened new doors into racism that were never there before. The school system is now being analyzed because it seems everything comes down to discrimination. It is sketchy that most of the members on the school board are all white except a couple, and one of the only black principles they had, got fired. But I think Ferguson should look at the details rather than take everything in as automatically offensive.
I do think that Ferguson has brought new things to the plate and caused a further look into segregation, but the riots happening because of Ferguson was taken too far. The fact that there is one black board member could just be because people don't run as much, or the white people seem to be more qualified. I believe there are other sides to every story, and I'm sure that if we looked into other places we would run into similar facts somewhere, and it too could be named "prejudice".
http://takingnote.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/01/05/no-comment-necessary-the-obama-economy/?ref=opinion&_r=0 I could see how Siegel could look at Obama as threatening because in most peoples opinion, he didn't do much up until 2013-14. With low gas prices, more jobs, and minimum wage rising, I think what Siegel was trying to say backfired completely. Obviously Obama has stepped it up and has improved what may not have been an all around successful first term. Also, the influence he was trying to have on others was unprofessional. He was basically working to get their vote against Obama by telling them he would raise minimum wage to 10$, which looks terrible on him because clearly that hasn't happened.
I think the US should be very careful with what they do with this situation. I feel like theyre just trying to be laid back. but in reality we should be on edge to make sure this group does not try something over extreme. they have be air striking this base that holds about 300 US soldiers. the air strikes haven't been effective when it comes to harming the base but I still think we should be very careful.
I think we should be careful, but I also think we haven't been told much about what we're doing to them. Like this article said we're not certain of how many Iraqi casualties there has been. I don't think Iraq will take much further action, because the US is very well equipped, and we could always send more troops ultimately winning.
I think the bill will be passed to start the project on the pipeline. itll be tough but I think even if the president vetos it. there will be enough support to overrule it and get it passed. I think this will benefit the US enormously. will it kill trees and animal life? of course, but what haven't we've done already to do that in so many other occasions.
I believe that Congress should pass the keystone pipeline. It would create hosts of temp jobs and lots of permanent jobs that could help stimulate the American economy. It is no secret that we get most of our oil from other countries. This would give us control over the price of oil while boosting our economy. I don't know what congress is thinking by not putting hard working Americans to work.
http://takingnote.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/01/06/the-jeb-bush-optimism-challenge/?ref=opinion In this article, the author criticizes the mission statement of a new PAC that Jeb Bush, a potential Republican Presidential candidate for the 2016 election, recently founded. The mission statement talks about how the American dream has recently been put out of reach for many middle class Americans. The author points out that the mission statement contradicts itself, by being both optimistic and cynical. I think the author may be reading into this too much and may be knitpicking. As Bush prepares a potential campaign for presidency, it makes sense that he would want to include some optimism reminiscent of Reagan’s “Morning in America” campaign. It also makes sense that he would point out the flawed American dream, so that it is clear that he recognizes issues of the current administration.
This article makes me sick, why is there still racial and economic segregation in schools? The article states "as well as the inequality in school funding that prevents many poor districts from lifting their children up to state standards." If we are so supposed to be a country of freedom and equality, then why are students not at state standards? The schooling shouldn't be based off of where you live, we all have a right to education, and taking it out on students, that do NOT have control over any of it is annoying. "These communities and others like them are further disadvantaged by having low property values and by a statewide cap enacted in 2011 that limits what money they are able to raise through property taxes. And last year the New York State United Teachers union said that the cap had been particularly harmful to poorer districts."
The Governor of Maryland, Martin O'Malley, whose name was mention for potential 2016 democratic presidential candidate, has commuted the last 4 inmates on the states death row. I do not think that this should of happened, you have to do something pretty serious to get on death row. The article says "Whether or not Mr. O’Malley runs for president, his action is a mark of how quickly the death penalty debate in America has shifted. Liberals have long opposed capital punishment, and now more conservatives are speaking out against it as well, variously describing it as immoral, unjust, racist, arbitrary, costly and ineptly carried out." I could not agree more with this statement, its like America is so worried about the image we're going to get if we do certain things.
Extreme punishments are more for show than anything. It's used as a.scare tactics to try to prevent crimes from ever happening. When an orginazation uses jumps to the death penalty we have seen a breakdown in the system. Death should only be used as a threat and rarely uses. If deems that 4 people are deserving of death than it is time for a new punishment to take its place. Do I think that this should be used against him? No he basing it on other causes that have happened before. He should be aloud to run , but I think America needs a more.liberal thicker to come up with a punishments that puts fear back into the eyes of criminals and keep our streets safe again.
http://takingnote.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/01/05/sneak-peak-at-the-g-o-p-2016-field/?ref=opinion In this article, the author rattles off a list of potential G.O.P. candidates for the 2016 Presidential election. These candidates include the likes of Jeb Bush, Mike Huckabee, Rick Perry, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz. While the author points out flaws in each of these candidates, he seems to believe Bush would be an early frontrunner, referring to him as the “flavor of the month.” As Hillary Clinton seems to be a near lock for the Democrats, it will be interesting to watch the build up to the G.O.P. nomination.
This article shines a light on the terrorist attack on Charlie Hebdo in France. The author says the newspaper article that was attacked had had a reputation of putting racist remarks/bits in their articles. One of the men who was killed, the editorial director, had refused to tone down any parts of the harmful cartoons and caricatures. In my opinion, even though opinion is obviously included in free speech, I think it shouldn't be a surprise that people were highly offended and that they initiated attack. Several people were killed, and it wasn't right, but if you ask me, those people had something coming from the beginning.
I agree that isn't right to kill yet the newspaper was in the wrong from the beginning. Newspaper articles get a lot of attention and I just can't seem to understand why they would put negative attention on themselves. They should've realized that they were wrong and and "toned down" the remark that they made. Again, it's very tragic that this happened but they didn't choose to put the article in the right direction and that was very wrong of them.
This article talked about conspirasts and why they think the way they do. To me, I think of them as simply curious, and really eager to know everything about everything that's ever happened in the world. Some of the evidence that these people come up with and find is astounding and sometimes it forces people to see their way. Of course, there are negative effects of this, such as a decline in the trust of the government and its decisions. We all know the government is very good at hiding things. I think these people are just better at finding them
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/08/opinion/charles-blow-who-should-apologize-in-police-conflict.html?ref=opinion&_r=0 In this article, the author talks about the conflict in New York City between the police and the mayor. The president of the police force demands that the mayor apologize, but who really should? The author says the police should for the usual reasons we hear so often. But I'd have to disagree because the mayor actually started an "anti-police program." I don't think this is okay. There can be reforms made to deal with those police that abuse their authority, but never a whole anti-police program. The police and the mayor should be working together for the well being of the people in which they serve. I think the mayor should apologize, not so that the police "win," but because it was wrong of him to ever have gone against the police. They are "one team."
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/08/opinion/nicholas-kristof-lessons-from-the-charlie-hebdo-shooting-in-paris.html?ref=opinion I really like this article! The author talks about how the Islamic religion is always who is looked to when there is a terrorist attack, and in reality, who are disproportionally the victims of terrorist attacks. The author goes on to say that Christians didn't have anything to apologize for anything when other Christians in the former Yugoslavia initiated a genocide against Muslims, but why is it that Muslims always have to answer for every little thing here that happens? The author says it's best to just avoid religious profiling, because he has seen it all over the world. The author also gave other examples of heroes of various religions. This article for me is very inspiring.
This is definitely something that is startling. It has the potential to change a lot of peoples lives and not exactly for the better. This bill could be the end to many families source of income, raising the percentage of unemployed Americans. When Obama made this bill I wonder if he even thought this through. This could be very damaging to Americans.
It is amazing to think that after all the things the nations have been able to come up with and stop, we can not seem to be able to find a solution to the bad economy. This is a serious issue that every nation is dealing with. Its time to figure out what is the best way to deal with the issue and what nation should be given the task of finding the solution.
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/09/opinion/the-stumbling-tumbling-euro.html?ref=opinion&_r=0 In this Opinion Editorial it discusses the falling of the Euro and how it's at a 9 year low. The article says that the leaders arent doing much to "pull it out". Even though this will hit Europe hard, it will make European cheese, wine and vacations more affordable. However, they will have less demand for our goods if they hit a recession. Hopefully leaders take action and they don't have to go through a recession or depression.
The beauty of San Pedro Sula is astounding, although it's a beautiful city it is known for one thing, being the most dangerous city in the world (excluding war zones) for the third year in a row. With a rate of 187 of 100,000 homicides per year it happens to be in the wraps of a growing in militarization and gangs. According to the Honduran government since 2003 47 journalists and media executives have been murdered in the city. With growth of cartels and drugs in the area, the city only grows more and more dangerous. Police armed to the teeth can't maintain the organized crime and guns around the city.
Most people who go to airports believe that the idea of smuggling a firearm through the security is impossible and would get you in trouble right away. To that a New York district attorney discovered that there was a security defect that most airports were prone to having. The defect being that airport security fails to screen workers such as mechanics, pilots, baggage handlers, and people of that sort. A scheme had been in place where five of those people had smuggled 153 firearms from Atlanta to New York in accomplices carry on bags. With "lax gun laws" according to the district attorney that this wouldn't happen if we had stricter gun laws. For that I disagree and believe that each person should be able to own a firearm for safety reasons.
http://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/01/06/officials-46200-immigrants-have-started-applying-for-new-california-driver/ 46,200 illegal immigrants went to get licenses in California in the first day they were giving them out. In my opinion I think this is magnificent because this help out immigrants to be here and not have fear of getting stopped and having to get deported. I also think this is a great step. I think that we should give illegal immigrants a chance in the country. So with Cali already giving them licenses it is in a sense the first step for immigrants to be accepted here. I hope that these people take advantage of this wonderful opportunity! -Yanira.R
http://money.cnn.com/2015/01/09/news/economy/wages-raise/index.html?category=home This talking about wages not raining so much in 2015. In my opinion I think that minimum wage should stay where it's at. This is due to the fact that if it is raised then some employers won't hair as easily and it'll be more challenging for certain people to get jobs. So this would cause unemployment to go up. Another thing is some things people do aren't worth some amount of money. For example and simple bag person shouldn't be paid $10 for simply bagging groceries. So this would be bad because we'd just be paying people unfairly. Although the article said wages would go up this year it said it wouldn't be by a lot. So I feel that wages are good where they're at currently.

And it definitely is not right. Even here in Columbus there are some schools who are almost all blacks. Or there are some schools that have a vast majority of white students. And the all of the "white" schools seem to be rich, while Columbus City Schools (which has a majority of black students) seem to barely have A/c or heaters.
http://www.foxnews.com/us/2014/12/23/mother-2-us-citizens-seeks-refuge-in-philadelphia-church-to-avoid-deportation/ This story I hope opens many people's eyes. This mother and her family have to live in poor conditions in order to stay together. But it's all over a stupid deportation. While I feel that she should be granted permission to stay here due to her having two U.S resident children and her spouse is a resident as well and her family have had to come here. But apparently the government doesn't agree. I think certain deportations such as this should stop because all it does is separate families. Which I think is the total opposite of what America is which is a family united country. So I hope that Obama will find a way to aid illegal immigrants. As well as the next president I hope that he or she will keep it and pass some type of law. "But that's OK with her — as long as her mom is safe" this quote shows the strength of this family despite the deportation threat.
http://www.cnn.com/videos/world/2015/01/08/pkg-mann-france-and-islam.cnn This is about the terrorist attack at a newspaper place in Paris. About the terrorist attack I think it's incredibly terrible. Especially the motif that caused it which was political cartoons. Which in my opinion are a form of art and expression. Although even though so people may not agree, shooting up a place is certainly not the answer. We should be able to express ourselves with out worry. Whether the U.S should get involved I feel like we should possible not get too involved but possible try and assist in finding the attackers. This should also cause us to watch out for our country and people to make sure we are all safe and ready to combat an attack. The terrorist I feel are so in the wrong. I researched and Muslims disagree with this that they do. They all say they're religion is about peace and not horrible actions such as what those terrorists did. So they aren't even doing something for they're religion. They're simply being violent. Although I think France trying to make the religions face masks illegal is bad. They should be able to express themselves as well and do what they wish. Expecailly if it's over religion than it shouldn't be a problem.

ReplyDeleteThis is not really surprising that this is happening not only in New York, but all over the country. And it definitely is not right. Even here in Columbus there are some schools who are almost all blacks. Or there are some schools that have a vast majority of white students. And the all of the "white" schools seem to be rich, while Columbus City Schools (which has a majority of black students) seem to barely have A/c or heaters.

ReplyDeleteThis story I hope opens many people's eyes.

ReplyDeleteThis is about the terrorist attack at a newspaper place in Paris.
