http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2013/11/05/newt-gingrich-christie-one-of-the-top-contenders-in-2016/?hpt=po_c2 This article is about how Chris Christie is one of the top contenders for the presidential election in 2016. The article also says that governors are looking good for becoming presidential candidates. I would agree with this statement because voters tend to like governors and military leaders more than Senators. Governors do not normally have as much power as Senators so they are more trusted than higher politicians.
I agree. Voters also are more familiar with governors and military leaders. People are more likely to vote for people that they are familiar with. Also you're right, they have less power so they are definitely more trustworthy.
This article is a bit of a sigh of relief from the GOP in my opinion. After the government shutdown fiasco and the blame pinned mainly on the GOP, the majority of republican party leaders and well-known republicans stated that the party had "lost" or "had been defeated". To see that they've got a strong batch of hopeful governors on their way to a 2016 presidential nomination shows that the GOP has not only bounced back, but bounced back stronger than ever. I've heard a bit on the Virginia and New Jersey governor races, but not enough to rattle on about them, but from what I've seen, Chris Christie is one of the front-runners for a GOP presidential nomination, and if what Newt Gingrich says is correct, he'll be bringing some much needed changes to Congress.
I think it is interesting to see how far we look ahead to future Presidential elections. How they watch those contenders that have stood out in their current government positions. I agree with you Emily. I think people can support those that have fought for our country and have a pretty good knowledge of how it is run and how to get the citizens' attention and probably even vote.
http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/04/politics/senate-vote-lgbt-discrimination-bill/index.html?hpt=po_c2 This article discusses the ENDA bill. This will protect lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender employees from discrimination. It gives a breakdown on the Republicans opinion for and against this bill. I think it is a free country and we protect everyone's rights, so we should take measure to protect everyone in anyway we can.
I agree. Everyone should have the right to equal opportunity. We should be striving towards making this country a safer place for all people. If someone doesn't disagree with someone else's lifestyle choice, boo hoo, they should get over it. It's not something that's going to magically go away. LGBT employees deserve all the protection they can get.
I also agree with the rights backed by this bill. I think that all people no matter what religion, race, age, sex, gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity should be treated the same and have the same rights. It is sad that misconceptions about sexual orientation and gender identity influence career opportunities for people. We as a country should be past the point of being judgmental and discriminating against people just because they are different from the majority of citizens.
I agree as well. Americans talk about how glad they are to be free, but not everyone is. The LGBT community have been discriminated against for a very long time. It is not fair for them to be discriminated against just because they like the same sex. As Gabby said, America should be well past discrimination of others just because the yare different.
I also agree with Gabby and Emily, our country should together as a whole be past the discrimination of people just because they aren't exactly like everyone else. LGBT have rights just like everyone else and shouldn't be criticized for being different.
I think that I would be in agreement also. I mean even though we have problems to face in life, I don't think one should be discriminated from the workplace due to their sexuality. I myself know plenty of people who are GLB or T and have some outstanding work ethics. No company should focus on the sexuality as much as they should be focusing on their ethics.
I also agree. In America we always talk about how we're this great land of opportunity, so why would we take those opportunity away from someone just because of their sexuality? I think as Americans, we should know better than to discriminate because we've come so far from discrimination against African Americans. I agree with the ENDA bill.
I agree but I am disappointed by the fact that some of these basic rights have to be protected for it to be nondiscrimatory. Simple rights that we, as citizens of the UNITED states, should understand and worked so hard to obtain in the first place.
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-202_162-57610974/tearful-toronto-mayor-admits-crack-use-wont-step-down/ This article is about Toronto Mayor Rob Ford finally admitting to using crack while he was in a "drunken stupor" yet refuses to step down from office. In my opinion he should not automatically be assumed to leave office this is not fair of people to be so critical of one mistake he made. This mistake did not affect his duties as a mayor so he shouldn't be so harshly judged for it. This could be compared to Clinton's in fracture on a moral basis and he was not made to leave office even after admitting what he did.
This scandal, if you even want to refer to it as one, is more of a morality based scandal, rather than a judgement based one. Did the mayor admit to smoking cocaine? Yes he did. Was he cognitively aware of what he was doing? He said it was in a "drunken stupor", which is't cognitively aware, but at the same time doesn't help his case. Have there been other allocations of his substance/alcohol abuse? Yes, he was seen drunken in public on multiple occasions and was busted for possession of marijuana in 1999. Is he a bad man for doing so? I honestly believe that he's not a bad man, but rather a confused man who needs help or rehabilitation of some kind. Did he do a good job as mayor? That is unknown to me, as the article didn't state very much of his accomplishments. I feel if he was put into rehab, cleaned up, and broke his addictions to both drugs and alcohol, he'd be a good mayor.
LMAO "if you want to refer to it as one" It so is, though! The crack is whack, and illegal, among other things. It takes high integrity and morals (ones that don't necessarily need to be from any sort of religion) to make a good mayor. Breaking the laws set by your own country isn't the start of a good mayor. He didn't make a good choice when he decided to get high in da hough house and I think that he's paying for it as he should. There's never any excuse in using illegal drugs (especially cocaine, a party drug). I personally don't think anyone is a bad person but that doesn't mean that I'd say this guy was a good mayor. He may not be bad, but he sure is corrupted.
I believe that even though this very well may have been a one time mistake (smoking cocaine) isn't okay. Especially not for a mayor! so yes I think that he should step down from office on his own free will, and respect his spot in office to do so. There is no excuse to do drugs, especially someone that us citizens are suppose to trust.
I think that if this governor wont step don he should be removed from office. He obviously did not take his job seriously if he was abusing drugs. As a public figure he should have enough respect for the people of his city, his job title, and the US government to step down. Even if this drug abuse incident happened at the beginning of his time in office and he regrets it and all still happened and he should have respect to step down. But if he’s being difficult there should be an impeachment and removal from office.
Now If this was a one time thing of the mayor having a little too much to drink and smoked crack I would be disappointed if he was my mayor, but we all make mistakes and I would be more likely to forgive him and allow to keep his place as mayor. However, hes been reported to having been drunk in public times before and even had possession of marijuana. This is crossing the line where I would find it best for him to step down and find help because I wouldn't want a drunk smoker as my mayor.
The way I see it is that he should step down from his position. I could see maybe not if it was an honest one time mistake, but I don't think it was. It says that he was drunk in public multiple times and was busted for marijuana. Also, he says that he was drunk when he consumed the drugs, but the fact that he was able to have access to these drugs even in this manor seems a little shady to me. I feel that even if he isn't forced to leave office, he should do himself and the people a favor and step down.
Guys when you are really drunk you do not think straight, clearly this mayor was drunk in admitting publicly that he smoked crack cocaine in office. He also has a history of public intoxication, so clearly he has done his fair share of drugs. I think a little crack cocaine can spice up an administration, but as with most things in life, you must take it in moderation.
man you know what david is right. who doesn't want to just go out and party? the mayor cant party? he has his canadian rights to do some smack. Lets be real right now, who hasn't done a little crack. Maybe that mayor just wanted some attention and someone too hold him and you just whip him with your chains oppression. I for one oppose your bullying.
http://www.the-review.com/dix%20statehouse/2013/11/06/ohio-house-passes-minor-party-bill Mosey on over and (ignore the weird hospice ad) and take a look at this! Ohio just passed a law today that sets guidelines for minor parties. Some say it allows them to get on the ballot that the Republicans of Ohio have tried to prevent and the libertarian party says that it would actually make it more difficult to get on the ballot. What are your thoughts?
I think that this new law is to prevent third party candidates from getting on the ballot because since a lot of popular third parties are Republican, it will sometimes make a considerably large dent in the Republican votes, so to me, it makes total sense that Republicans would want this law, and that it would do what it does.
http://www.cleveland.com/open/index.ssf/2013/11/ohio_legislature_passes_new_ru.html I just found another article over this topic because I found it interesting when we mentioned it in class today. It still discusses how the rules have been changes a little. However, the main target of the bill seems to be aimed at the Libertarian party who as Elizabeth mentioned is more sided towards the Conservative end, slightly, would be removing votes from the Republican party that could potentially hurt our current governors chances for reelection. Here even though it shows that "hey, it wouldn't be as hard to get on the ballot now" it replaces it with them being unable to be a part of the primaries in 2014 and only having the 95 days to actually campaign.
I think that they should just give the independents a chance to see if they can even be elected. Then again, they might not want to do that because maybe the Democrats and the Republicans don't want to have a challenge. In my opinion, if the government is already in so much debt, not only from Democrats, also Republicans, then they should give the independent parties a chance to prove what they are made of!
http://www.cnn.com/2013/10/29/politics/obamacare-nsa/ Okay, so yeah, Obama has made some mistakes in his Presidency, however, this does not make him a bad guy. We are all human and things happen. Maybe he knew about the website problem, but thought that it had been fixed before launching. Maybe he knew about the wiring on allies, but just planned it so long ago that it slipped his mind. Plus, if the wiring started in 2002, that was not during his Presidency, but George W. Bush's, and that makes it Bush's wrong doing.
I agree with everything that Elizabeth said. Obama is in one of the toughest position. I do agree with all that is said here. Also as i was reading this, all i could think of was the "thanks obama" meme. This is pretty much saying how everyone blames Obama, and they really do, everyone seems to be losing their trust in Obama, when really, everything is not his fault.
http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/07/politics/obama-obamacare-apology/ This doesn’t make any sense to me. Why is the President apologizing for something he created? Why is he saying if the people which to keep their old plan they could. This shows weakness, it shows regret, it shows an apologetic side of him that he shouldn’t be showing this far in his presidency. If he worked that hard to make the affordable care happen he should back it up and believe in it. but if he has regrets he should just amend it.
Emelia is absolutely right. It does show regret, weakness and a side of him that he shouldn't be showing. I understand that he may feel responsible but by apologizing it is allowing people to start doubting him for future issues. He should have supported and backed up his plan. It would have made him look "stronger" to the people.
I agree with Josr and Emelia compmetly. If Obama made something that he thought would be so amazing and help Americans then why say sorry now? I think Obamacare was dumb to start with ...
I do agree with all of these. I think to be president you have to know what you're doing and why. This apolegetic side is completely showing that our president is weakening and you can't show that as president because it scares the people. Also like Kristina said, if he made all of these things of Obama Care, why quit now?
this is so very true and shows that the president is regretting something he pushed very hard to get and this is going to backlash on him i feel. if the president doesnt have confidence, then how can his people follow him?
Guys he isn't apologizing for all of Obamacare he is apologizing for Insurance Companies (corporations he can't control) dropping people's plans and leaving them out to dry until Obamacare is completely working. The article literally says "Most of the folks who ... got these cancellation letters, they'll be able to get better care at the same cost or cheaper in these new marketplaces." and also says they'll be hooking these guys up with health insurance.

They also state that if young adults catch the mental illnesses early, then that is less money that will come out of there pockets. I read this article and loved it! It is deffintly awsome that they are finding ways to help the younger generation with mental illnessillnesses before they get really bad. This mighe be expensive now but it'd save you and your loved ones the heartache in the future if anything would happen. Now lets get a cure for cancer!!

http://www.cato.org/blog/government-bigger-leakier I agree with this. As government becomes bigger and bigger there are bound to be people within the system to disagree with how the system is run. This is huge problem as very sensitive documents that can cause huge damage to other nations view on the American government could lead to more than just a political argument. Then again if such documents didn't exist the American government wouldn't have to worry about leaked documents.
I agree with this but there will always be information that the government, let alone anyone else's government, will need to handle and keep secret to protect us and our country. We certainly wouldnt want other countries to know anything that would give them an advantage over us.
