http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2015/03/31/indiana-lawmakers-hurry-to-clarify-religious-freedom-law-amid-protests/ In this article, the author writes about the controversial Religious Freedom Act recently passed by the state of Indiana. The law, some argue, could permit the the discrimination and exclusion of the LGBT community, as they are in direct conflict with some religions. In this article, the author writes about the governor of Indiana, Mike Pence, and his reaction to the nationwide criticism of the law. He explains that it was never intended to exclude anyone, and was instead intended to include a grander scope of people from different religious backgrounds. I think the public uproar surrounding this law is unnecessary. It’s not hard to see that the majority of the controversy surrounding this issue has been fueled by the media. An additional provision to the law that made it clear it could not discriminate against certain groups of people is all it would take to end the debate.
http://www.cnn.com/2015/03/19/politics/supreme-court-license-plates/index.html In this article, the author writes about a recent case taken by the Supreme Court regarding specialty license plates. The case stems from an issue in Texas regarding a group that wanted to put a confederate flag representing their business on a license plate. The local DMV blocked it, citing that it was offensive. The Supreme Court is reviewing whether or not this was a violation of the first amendment. In my opinion, this was not a violation of the institution’s freedom of speech, simply because the local law states that it is up to the DMV whether or not to accept a new design. Because it is the DMV’s discretion, the confederate flag on the license plate has no bearing on the matter.
I agree with you Josh. It is up to the dmv wether or not to accept the offensive design. They can go somewhere else if they want to use that license plate. I do not think that the first amendment has aching to do with this case. It's that simple.
"Its time for a fierce realism." Amen Amen. Everyone in todays age believes that simply asking another country not to attack another over oil is going to work. They even made a show where they bring different politcal leaders from different countries and try to talk their matters out with one another. Like oh hey i know i bombed your hospital but lets all get over it and be friends.
Country's today are scared of war. Tensions are already high between lot of country's and there is a lot of forgiveness because people don't want war. It's like Hittler and his rise to power. To the country's who realize this is a at for them to rise to power. It wouldn't surprising if a new supper power shows up out of no where. People think that pieces of paper and handshakes will protect them ,but that's just being unintelligent. People need to back up there word or it couldn't righ the world into chaos.
Since this is happening will it affect upcoming elections along the lines that people are going to come up with a new group questioning to determine what ideology that candidate is or what people are going to vote for them.
This seems to be becoming more and more of an issue the closer we are to getting the end of Obamas term. This is a very controversial issue. It always has been a very picky issue. I agree with Anastasia very much. This is going to be a topic voters are going to be looking at during the upcoming decision on who is going to be running next year. its kind of surreal to think that this term is almost done for Obama.
In this article, the author writes about how president Obama sent 22 letters to people spending decades or life in prison because of nonviolent drug crimes across the country. President Obama is ordering there release in July. Some of these people could have a strong addiction to drugs, ad being put in prison could be causing them to come off that addiction. I understand that if anyone really wants to do drugs then they will. I don't think that letting these people go, will do the country any good. In his letter, Obama wrote "but remember you have the capacity to make good choices" and "I believe in your ability to prove the doubters wrong." I believe people can change, but if they're not willing to change, these criminals are just going to do it all over again, and it could possibly get worse.
It's intresting that the founders gave the president this kind of power. Most don't dare use it till the enemies of office because it would look really bad. What Obama is saying is that he has faith in these people and believes he can do better. We need more people to have faith because it's that faith that can send someone on the right path. However it could come back to haunt him because there actions are on him. If they go back to there old ways then the blame will fall on him. Good for you Obama.
They'll do the exact same thing they did before they were in prison. It's ridiculous to think that most of them will turn themselves around. They had a chance to do it before prison. They'll look at this as a free token to do whatever they want again. Yes, a couple of them might turn themselves around. But is it a good idea to let them go and believe they'll be better after "punishment"? I don't think so
I agree with this approach to the situation. We live in a country where over 1/3 people have been or are in prison. Most of which are there for nonviolent offenses. Especially drugs. I think the solution to the war on drugs is to legalize it, regulate it, and tax it as they do with alcohol and tobacco. We it her you buy pot or heroine from your friendly neighborhood drug dealer or from the coffee shop it doesn't keep you from doing it. Only difference is you eliminate the organized crime that goes along with said drug.
I agree with Jonathan, I think. I agree with Obama's actions. The least he can do is give these people a second chance. They can most likely get the professional help they need to defeat their addiction, and if this doesn't really work, so what? I don't think Obama was trying to accomplish something nationally, meaning, I don't think he was trying to do the country any good. The same way you always see a candidate on TV kiss a baby or something, trying to show their nice side, is what I think Obama is doing here.
This article discusses the department of Education and when a list of 560 colleges and university's and that they have been placed under student-aid restrictions. because of their finances and compliance with federal laws. the article states "Last summer, the federal government delayed reimbursement to corinthian colleges, one of the country's largest operators of for-profit colleges and trade schools. This proved Fatal; the chain collapsed and agreed to sell or shut down 100 campuses"
Well well well.... Isn't France turning into the big bad wolf now a days. I fin d this quite interesting. When you think of France, you think, the Eiffel tower, romance, bike, curly mustaches. Never in your mind would you think of France being a big bad dog in the running for negotiations with Iran on nuclear programs and such. I mean thinking about how that conversation would go. "hey lets go get some baguettes. Taxes have gone down quite a bit. Oh and did you hear about how France is trying make ties with Iran on Nuclear stuff." quite the conversation. I would say so myself. France seems to want this more than the US on making ties with Iran. which makes me wonder what is France to do here.
The biggest hit to your retirement savingshttp://mobile.nytimes.com/blogs/takingnote/2015/04/03/the-biggest-hit-to-your-retirement-savings-living-too-long/ This article was interesting because it addressed the problem that Americans have been facing for far too long. When can I retire? The problem is it is just a guess as to how long you will live. You do not know the day you will die and you never will. I think the solution to this is to save too much and just give to your children when you have money left and die.
http://www.nytimes.com/politics/first-draft/2015/04/03/clinton-is-no-longer-seeking-office-shes-rented-one/?ref=us&_r=0 This article informs readers that potential presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has bought two floors in an office building in Brooklyn, New York. This space could potentially be the headquarters for her campaign. We all know she is a popular name in the upcoming election.
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/03/opinion/a-promising-nuclear-deal-with-iran.html?ref=opinion&_r=0 In this article the author talks about the resolution that will be finalized hopefully in June with Iran. Like most of the country, I think this is very good. It limits Iran's ability to make major weapons, which is certainly progressive. There are still other ways that Iran is a threat, but this deals only with their nuclear weapons. The author also mentions that those who are against the deal include those who will go to great lengths to undercut Obama anyway and that they do not accurately reflect the public's opinion. I agree with that as well, I find that to be frustrating.
http://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/04/04/opinion/big-businesss-critical-role-on-anti-gay-laws.html I think it's beneficial as well as amazing that big companies are going against discrimination with gays. It's opening up opportunities around the work place and helping give benefits to those who may not get it.
Tuesday The White House announced that blue prints for Obamas climate change initiative will cut green house emissions by 1/3 at least. The U.S. and China are the two largest producers of green house gases, in November Obama and Xi Jinping (China's president) plan to give their plans for green initiatives. Obama has many domestic plans for this, such as freezing construction of coal fired factories, increasing fuel economy of vehicles, and plugging methane leaks. But the plan relies largely on executive authority but with a republican locked congress this will be hard to pass.
The European Union wants a army of its own. President of the European Union Jean-Claude Juncker proposed to establish a army for the union. The Army is needed to counter such security threats, such as Russia. Juncker told a German newspaper that an army serving for the European Union would improve collective security and reduce costs of the individual countries. Russian politicians however believe that the army would provoke conflicts with Russia. In my opinion I believe the European Union should create an army, due to the conflicts in Ukraine with Russia and growing insurgency and militant groups.
http://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/04/03/opinion/a-promising-nuclear-deal-with-iran.html I love the idea that Obama will cut off all ties with Iran and their nuclear weapons. he should continue to go forward with this program and work towards shutting down their weapons which then will hopefully end all of this talk of war.
Women being held in a detention center went on strike and demanded to be let go. Several complaints have been made about this specific center for sexual assault and other offenses, such as unhealthy living conditions and not enough food. They are being held there for illegal crossing of the border to the United States, but they definitely don't deserve to be held in conditions like the ones described in this article. They also have kids in the facility, who are being held. The well being of people should be first over the punishment of people. Especially when the reasons for crossing the borders were because of chaos in their homeland.
I agree with you and I think that this is very unfair to the women and they are in the right for going on strike. These conditions should be inspected and something should be done to help the rights of these people. Its such a hard situation because we should want to help the latinos who have so much chaos in their hometowns but we cant just help all of them so I don't really know where I stand.
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/04/opinion/the-many-droughts-of-california.html?ref=opinion This article is about how the state of California has a problem with droughts, especially in southern Cali. It talks about how the state is so big and diverse that a dozen different droughts are in effect. It says that Northern Californians, blessed with racing rivers, have relatively little to worry about, while around the megalopolis of Los Angeles, the water sources are remote and aqueducts are lifelines. This is scary because it continues to get worse year by year and there's really no solution.
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2015/04/04/govt-program-would-fly-in-central-american-children-to-join-parents-in-us/ I think this is a nice idea. Basically the US homeland security decided to fly over children from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala. This is so those poor children wouldn't have to walk across themselves and endure dangerous things. They would have to go through at least 2 countries before getting to the US. There is a condition the parents must have some type of legal stays in US. For example a work permit. Then they will be able to ask for their kids to be brought over and for free. To me this is a good idea. Due to the fact that those kids won't have to be in danger while crossing over. Also they will finally be together with their family which will be great for them.

Which in my opinion is magnificent. She goes to say how she wishes the women would be as outspoken and active about the situation as they were in the 70's and 80's. Which in a way I kinda agree with. Many people don't realize how unfair some things still are I'm today's society. For example unequal pay for men and women. Women do in fact get paid less than men! As to why they do I don't have the answer and I'm sure nobody does because it just seams so sill that they would pay men differently from women who can do the same task and possibly better. Women are labeled back and forth while men are celebrated for certain action which I think is so foolish. So maybe with a fight they may be able to change that. But as I said it could be hard due to the stereotype being what people want to say. All in all I hope that women do finally get equal rights.
