This article is all about the surprisingly high rates of college dropouts. 47% of college freshmen drop out before earning their bachelor's degree. Within a twenty year period (1994-2014) over 4 million people started college, but never finished. The American Institute for Research estimated that the cost of dropping out, measured in lost earnings and taxes, to be around $4.5 billion. One possible explanation for these high rates is that high schools aren't preparing students for college enough. I don't believe this to be true. I think the problem is that students don't use high school to their advantage, by taking honors or AP courses, and then are in for a rude awakening once they hit college.

    1. I completely agree with this. Today in my AP Biology we found out that Mr Chawla will not have an AP Bio class next year and we discussed the implications of it. Out of 1600+ students, he could not gather 15 to take the class that every freshmen in college will have to take. He also mentioned how terrible it is that the variety in our AP classes is dwindling down severely. Kids will DEFINITELY be surprised when they enter college.

This article is about the how long many people have to wait in order to be seen in court. The article features a story about a man who went to court 20 times, just to be told his trial couldn't take place at those times. This man had to wait over a thousand days before he was finally seen in a courtroom. Currently, the average wait time on a misdemeanor crime is 827 days (That's over 2 years!). I think that trials should have to be held within 3 months of the alleged crime. Think of all of the things these people have lost just because they couldn't get their trial any sooner.

    1. Reply to Taylor,
I agree with your idea of the 3 month limit. I think that many people do lose their case because of the time waiting. Much like the voting turnout in our society. People are lazy and don't want to have to wait more than the necessary time needed in their schedule. Also I feel that most cases might die off and lose potential to make it to court as well.

  3. Reply to Taylor's first article: I definitely agree with you when you say that students don't push themselves by taking AP and accelerated courses. I believe that it is because they are thinking short term of all of the work they will have to do instead of thinking long term and how much it will really help them in the future when it comes to being prepared for college.

This article is about the auction of George Zimmerman's gun he used to kill Trayvon Martin. This truly makes me angry and shows the ignorance of a human being. Why would you sell a gun you used to kill an unarmed African american boy ? It hurts to know the community that this man was acquitted of all charges and justice was not served, but an even bigger slap to the face is he is selling the gun for profit. Just sickens me that this man is not behind bars. Luckily the website he wanted to sell it on denied him, but what would give him the reason to want to sell it? Trayvon,a boy carrying skittles and iced tea, you shot to death and yet claimed it was self defense. Gets acquitted and now wants to sell the firearm you used to kill him. What has the world come to? I mean come on like this is just outrageous and shows he has no care or sympathy in the world for him or his family.

    2. I think this is crazy. Regardless of whether it was really self defense or not, murder weapons should never be sold and bought like a toy. This boy’s life was important and shouldn't be taken lightly. Zimmerman should be ashamed of killing him, not proud and trying to profit it from it.

This article is talking about how much older the candidates are this year than they usually are. They mention how Trump is 70 and beat out all of the other Republicans. They also mention how Hillary is 69, going up against Bernie Sanders who is 74. This is definitely a different year than most, not only because of their age but because of who it has come down to honestly. Like I have said before, I'm actually happy that I'm not 18.

    1. When I learned that I could vote for the president my first time voting, I was ecstatic. Now though, it is not something that I am looking forward to. I will probably vote third party and I feel that they will get a lot more voters during this election, even if they probably cannot win from it.

    3. I did not know they were THAT old, sure I knew Hillary was looking a bit rough. But Trump is even older than Hillary? That is a bit surprising. I wonder what the average age for candidates are, because it does seem oddly different this year compared to other years I've seen.

This article is about how Bernie Sander's math is not adding up. Even after his win in Virginia this past Tuesday, I think it's safe to say that Hillary will get the nomination. This is terrible, our world is heading to a time where we either have Trump or Hillary as President of the United States. I feel that many people will be stuck with who to vote for which will bring out low voter turn out for this next election. Also, many people will vote for "the lesser of two evils". This I think will be a very close vote.

    1. I'm also very scared for this election. I always feel like the elections always ends with picking the lesser of two evils but this one certainly takes the cake of being a perfect example of it. I've a;ways had that feeling since Bernie lost New York that he won't get the nomination but i always hoped it would not turn out like this. But remember what they say about picking the lesser of two evils that you will not be able to sleep at night.

    2. Bernie would be hypocritical in accepting the nomination because the only way he could win is with superdelegates, something he has criticized over and over again. Furthermore, Hillary is not as bad as everyone says she is. What has she really done that was so despicable? I think she is just getting a lot of flack because this is an election about outsiders vs elites. But, she is a hell of a lot better than Trump.

  7. http://money.cnn.com/2016/05/13/news/high-heels-women-petition/index.html?iid=ob_homepage_NewsAndBuzz_pool
This article calls on a ban of dress codes that require women to wear high heels. High heels are nice for special occasions, but wearing them regularly can cause lasting health effects like knee and back problems. They can be incredibly painful and can cause women to fall, get blisters, and many other painful things. Forcing women to wear them is unnecessary because of how painful they can be, and there are much more comfortable and professional options, like nice flats.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I do not understand why such a thing should ever be required anyway. Did the people who made those dress codes ever wear heels before. They are almost never comfortable. Plus, people should definitely be allowed to choose what shoes they want to wear, no matter what. Also, you are absolutely right that heels can have major health implications. That makes it especially crucial that women be able to choose which professional shoes they are going to wear.

This article is about how the Clinton foundation is saying that they didn't broke any law. The Clinton Foundation is denying a Wall Street Journal report that alleged the organization steered money to a for-profit company partly owned by Clinton friends and Democratic donors. Clinton Foundation spokesman Craig Minassian insisted Thursday that "absolutely" no laws were broken despite the Wall Street Journal's suggestion that the foundation might have violated a federal law that tax-exempt non-profit organizations must act in the public interest and not in any private interest. With this new news, the investigation that was being conducted might just pick up some speed. Which might mean that Clinton might not be allow to run.

It's not really a surprise that he did not send out his tax returns. Something like that is way more likely to be negative to him even if it shows nothing that could harm his reputation (heh). Though, what I wonder is why he may think that, he has such a oddly strong base that it does not really matter what he does, he still will be supported. Perhaps because the primaries are coming up he's aiming to keep as much heat or pressure off of him as possible?

This is all about how Trump told everyone that he would only use his own money on the election. It seems that he has found a loophole in this by having the republican party raise money for him from groups that have no special interest. It also tells about how, theoretically, Trump can keep fundraising and actually gain money from the election. To further their philosophy that Trump is a liar, they also say that the 5 or 6 candidates for his vice president could grow to 100,000 before the convention.

  14. http://mobile.nytimes.com/2016/05/14/opinion/gender-is-more-than-just-anatomy.html

This article is about how discrimination against transgenders using the bathroom that matches their identity might violate Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The Obama administration says it does but North Carolina says “the authors did not have transgender people in mind when they wrote it.” Since there was no record made when the amendment was made, the act can be interpreted in a number of ways. I think that even though the authors might not have had transgenders in mind when they wrote the act, it should be obvious that transgenders are protected under this act.

This article talks about the motor voter laws having some effect on voter turn out. The article talks about how 12 states have seen a recent increase in voter turnout due to voter registration. Oregon seems to have seen quite a distinct increase though. I find this weird because in class it was said that these laws were ineffective but his article says other wise.

    1. I know there was a question about the motor voter law on either the real AP test or the practice ones we took in class, but my brain has undergone so much strain this week I can't remember specially where I've seen the motor voter law. It's kind of weird that there's been a spike especially since that law was established a while ago. Perhaps the recent spike is due to the unusualness of the candidates running in primaries and more people want their voice to be heard and vote to count.

    2. I agree with you Pam. It's odd that the Motor Voter Law isn't making much of a difference until recently. This is mostly a result of the highly advertised election because so many people want to people to vote for this upcoming election. It may also have to do with millennials desire to support Bernie Sanders in the primary elections.

This article is about Donald Trump’s wealth and how he has chosen to independently find his campaign. It's always one of his main points that he brings up and always believes it's an advantage over other candidates. But he has recently started scheduling fundraisers and is working with the Republican Party to make an arrangement that will allow him to accept big donations from people who don't know what else to do with their money. It is rumored that Trump won't make his tax returns either so maybe he doesn't have as much money as he's leading on.

This article is about the fight against the law in North Carolina that prohibits transgender people to use the bathrooms they feel the most comfortable using. This article focuses on the different interpretations of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that relate to this case. For example, some say that the Civil Rights Act protects people of all sexes including people that identify as transgender. Others argue that at the time that the Civil Rights Act was written the lawmakers that added "sex" to this act didn't have transgender people in mind. I think that it makes the most sense to interpret laws according to the time period.

In this article, Kevin Liptak points out how the White House is picking sides without actually picking them. They claim that Obama and Biden both say good things about the running democrats, and that Trump will not be president. Obama points out that there is a very small chance for Sanders to win. He can't win by pledged delegates alone at this point. I think that means, based on what they are saying, we're not going to have a good president.

This article talks about a heavy accusation made by Ken Livingston against Zionists. Livingston, former mayor of London and a member of the parliament had recently made the remark that "Hitler was a Zionist". This is a very heavy accusation that has made many people angry, and the article discusses that while there is no solid proof of this "theory", Livingston justifies his comment by talking about how the nazis and Zionists worked together to persecute the Jews in a way. The whole theory is disgusting and very horrible for relations with Israel. By linking Israel with the Third Reich, he is saying that the people who tried to help the Jews were just as horrible to them as the people harming them. This article was written by a professor of modern Jewish history and holocaust studies, and she ends the article with a question that depicts how horrible what happened to the Jews was and how the Zionists were helping and why this accusation is horrible and unjustified.

  20. http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/dont-worry-about-the-electoral-college-math/

This article is about why right now it is a waste of time to start talking about the math of the electoral college and polling in swing states this early in the general election process. The conventions haven't even happened and already polls from Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania have been making the rounds in the media. These polls are anout the presumptive nominees, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, and the main takeaway from the polls seemed to be how surprisingly close Trump is to Clinton in these key swing states. But it's May. Just under 6 months until the general election these polls don't matter all that much. It's almost a guarentee that they will change before the time polls open up in November. The votes in the electoral college that these states make up also probably won't matter individually all that much. The probability of the oft-mentioned and oft-feared division of popular vote winner and actual election winner is so small that it's very, very, unlikely to occur any year, and we shouldn't be spending time on discussing the hypotheticals of it now.

This article is about how since the presidency of George HW Bush, President's have been giving many more comencement speeches than they had been previously. This data is pretty interesting to show how the role of the President has changed since the data first started being collected during the term of Harry Truman. These addresses bring the President closer to the people, and an especially key group of people that are soon to be entering the work force with a degree for the first time and are the future of country's economy. In the few commencement speeches I've seen, normally the audience pays closer attention than they normally would to any other speech. Many are looking for advice from someone who has been in their shoes and is choosing to tell them what they should be hearing. It's a very persuasive time and a good opportunity to get a group of people that will be very important in the coming years to listen closely to the advice of the most powerful man in the world, and I'm sure most are listening with extremely open ears.

However, it is just a place where LGBT and other minority groups can be themselves 100%. One could argue churches are safe spaces for Christians. I doubt you'd see a conservative complaining about how that's an infringement on freedom of speech

This opinion editorial from the New York Times discussed emission standards in America and the rising issue of global warming. According to the author, methane is the second highest influencer of global temperature, second only to carbon dioxide. The new regulations and laws would require that oil companies recapture their methane emissions and store them. Oil companies are complaining about the cost due to their already low and falling values, but the EPA claims that the costs will be offset by the savings acquired by these regulations. I, personally, am all for saving the planet, but I don't understand how our where the greenhouse gas would be stored. Theoretically, we would run out of storage room some day. Then what?
