This editorial was about Dilma Rousseff, president of brazil. She is likely to be kicked out of her office because of the allegations that she used money from state banks to balance the budget. There was a vote of 367 to 147 to impeach her. The case has more issues to it than just taking liberties in balancing the budget. Other elected officials have done that and haven't drawn as much attention. Ms. Rousseff is being blamed for the country's crisis and the overlapping corruption investigations of brazil's political establishment. The president is at a very risky stage , the motion will me moving up to the senate, who will be in charge of approving or rejecting the impeachment with simple majority. If the senate approves and votes for impeachment she will step down temporarily and senate will consider the allegations against her. If they find that she is guilty, VP Temer will take power, he was a former ally of the president, and has turned against her . The president says that this is absurd and a coup that is battling democracy
This is a very interesting article Miriam. I think it is scary about how other officials have done the same in this society. I hope that this isn't happening in our community behind our backs. This brings up the topic of how much our government is hiding from us and how much do we really know about their actions. I think that it is not right for Rousseff to have taken from the hard working people in her nation to balance the budget. She should be impeached.
North Carolina recently passed a discriminatory law against gay and transgendered people last month. This has led to a lot of talk from both parties, and a strong disapproval from certain communities. Although this law led to a lot of disapproval state legislators in many states such as Tennessee's, Kansas, south Carolina and Minnesota are pushing for the demand to police public bathrooms., which is a push for more discriminatory action. This is a very tricky issue because for once side it's a privacy matter for both parties involved. Policed restrooms leads to violation of privacy and so do unmonitored restrooms. Generally, public restrooms are a choice so that should be respected. It's such a tricky topic because people who identify themselves as other genders feels uncomfortable going in to restrooms of their “natural/born” gender. But in the other hand a straight person can feel uncomfortable going in and seeing someone of the opposite sex in the restroom.
I know a little bit more about this topic because we went over this issue in Mr. Eckard's psychology class. Those who identified with the opposite race and are going through or have been through a sex change are scared to use their natural born genders bathroom. They have said that they are in fear of being jumped in the bathroom. However, North Carolina has proposed the idea of a unisex bathroom. In response to this, transgenders feel that they are being discriminated against by having to use separate bathrooms.
This is a really difficult topic. It’s so tough because it makes people on both sides uncomfortable. Public restrooms are already uncomfortable just knowing other people are in there, and transgenders, surveillance, and possible violence make it even more complicated. But I personally think that you should use whatever bathroom matches your body parts, not what you wish you were.
I see the uncomfortably of having to use a gender barroom that you don't agree with but rules are there for reason. People should use the bathroom that matches your body part. I don't really think unisex bathrooms would work because of the problems they would cause. For example it would be allow creeps to have easier access to target people. I don't think this problem will ever find a peaceful resolution.
I agree with Alyssa and Franklyn. I personally think that you should use the bathroom of the sex that you were born as. That said, the law should have never even brought this up. Its a restroom of all things. Also, policed restrooms just sounds ridiculous. First off, having to be checked every time you use a bathroom is stupid and takes way too much time, especially when you usually spend about five minuets in there in the first place.
I don't see why the legislature of North Carolina decided that it was a good idea to dabble in this topic. I wouldn't want to approach controversial topics like this at all, and especially not from such an awkward angle like public restrooms. To be honest, if a transgender person, for example, was born as a woman but now identifies as a man, they will most likely be dressed like a man as well. If the use the stalls and not the urinals, there is absolutely no way of knowing what they're natural gender is. The only way to know would be to have guards or cameras to check people's body parts. That is obviously an extreme violation of privacy and absolutely ridiculous that it's being considered at all.
This article is probably the most funny article I have ever used this year. This is about how on Monday at a Donald Trump speech, in New York. He misspending his writing and said 7/11 instead of 9/11. This is the most devastating territory attack on the United States since Pearl Harbor, and you get it mixed up with the name of a drug store chain. However, Trump had spoken a lot that day and we all should give him the benefit of the doubt, pop or guy. Didn't even correct himself after the mistake too. Can't believe this is the guy Americans want to see in the Oval Office!
I saw that part too, he could of easily corrected it on the spot but he chose not to, which is very odd. Though I do find it kind of funny even if it was a mistake of off something horrible, especially since he said it in a sad tone. I wonder how much candidates have to go through to prepare for speeches, especially such long ones.
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/22/opinion/hillarys-big-idea.html?ref=opinion&_r=0 This article is about how people are wanting "radical" changes for both parties. This is why people like Trump more than Cruz, and Bernie is only still in the running because his radical ideas. People feel that Hillary is more qualified than Bernie because her track record, which is funny because she's had inconsistent ideas, where Sanders hasn't but. Hillary's slogan is "Fighting for us" and tries to appeal more to the white women vote. Over all people do not want to vote for Hillary or Trump as illustrated in this quote. "Here’s the central conundrum for Clinton: A majority of people think the system is broken, and must change. But a majority also has an unfavorable view of Clinton."
I definitely agree with you on that front Alexis, the times they are a changing. People are tired of the establishment politician, they're tired of the broken promises and corruption from big money, they want real, substantial change. This is why we have seen the rise of Sanders and Trump, both refuse to take from big money, they both come off as authentic to the people, and promise big changes for this nation. They appeal to the wants of the people, it's no surprise as to why they rise, while the moderates fall.
I agree with Alexis. One of the reasons that people like Trump so much is because he is extremely outspoken. He is not afraid to hide his beliefs, and this is evident in a lot of his policies. People tend to lean more toward someone who is far left or far right (such as Bernie or Donald) because they are more easily identifiable. I think that Trump seems like somebody who is reliable and will keep it real with America, and it's actually not surprising that he's doing so much better than Ted Cruz, who seems, in the words of Holden Caulfield, "phony."
This article is all about the proposed Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) legislation. This order allows for parents of american citizens to apply for work permits and take away the threat of getting deported. Immigrant parents have a hard time finding a job outside of manual labor because they don't have a social security number. I believe that the DAPA act is unnecessary because there is already ways for families to become legal within the states, so there is absolutely no reason why we need to spend money on another option when there is already a solution.
Reply to Lexie: I definitely agree that people are definitely looking for radical changes to happen across America, such as how Sanders wants to raise minimum wage and how Trump wants to build a wall to stop illegal immigration. On the topic of appealing to a certain type of voter: I definitely agree that Hilary tries to appeal to women voters. I would say that Trump is trying to appeal to southerners, and Sanders appeals to younger voters and middle to lower class families. This way the candidates can ensure they have a strong base of who will vote for them.
He actually didn't misspeak in his speech. He was referring to the people who risked their lives to help those in the 9/11 attack. Yes it seems like it could have been a mistake. But he isnt wrong when he talks about 7/11. When he says 7/11 he is speaking about engine 7, ladder 1 and battalion one.
I personally believe this is a bad idea. For so many years we banned Iran from having any nuclear power and now, just like other necessities, were buying it from them. Now that they know we want it, exactly how much are we spending to buy it? How much would it have cost for us to make it or find it? We are buying 32 metric tons of nuclear power form them, also known as heavy water. However, the reason we are buying it, explains why we are getting it from them. The article further goes on to state that we are buying to basically just to get it away from them or take it out of their hands. Its terrible because it teaches them that if they get it we will buy it, but its good because were taking a large amount of power away from them/
http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/22/politics/us-nuclear-iran-purchase/index.html I agree with hannah that yes its a good idea that were taking it away from them but if they can get there hands on that much buying it makes no differnce to them becuase they can just buy or make more and on top of them making it now they have money to get things they need other than the materials they can make. we should just blow them up like we do any other time and take what we want
http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/21/politics/trump-gop-insiders-florida/index.html Trump cant smooth over naything with anyone i cant belive hes really winning or has the chance to he shows you what you can do with money in america its horrible.
It's interesting how history seems to repeat itself in regards to conflict between presidential hopefuls. With Reagan and Ford, Humphrey v McCarthy, and Now Hillary v Sanders and Trump v Cruz, there is great conflict as to who should be the nominee. With this conflict, people seek resolution, they seek a single nominee to rally behind, but some, may not all agree as to who. When it comes to Sanders, there is a large base of his support, around 1/3, who promise to never vote for Clinton if she wins the nomination for president, either not voting period, or even voting for Donald Trump. It's a tough road if Clinton wins, because Trump is her only chance at victory, and even thn it's close, if it's anyone else, her chances are greatly reduced.
Unifying the Democratic party sounds like something that will not happen soon. I not really sure what it means by that, does it mean get a majority of the democrats behind a candidate? or something else? Though I do agree with the article with it saying the republican side is really helping out the democrats by making themselves a whole lot less favorable to the public, mostly because of Trump I would think. The battle between Clinton and Sanders seems a very interesting one I want to keep a eye on, I'm not sure how it's going to go.
Looks like that Trump and the Republicans are not on the same page. The Republican party as said that they are trying to unify and evolve. But Trump told his supporters the Republican system is rigged and crooked. But then Trump being Trump is now trying to smooth things over with the Gop. The dilemma facing the Republican National Committee and its members meeting here this week is that Can they cope with Trumps an unpredictable personality who has come this close to winning the presidential nomination with a campaign leaning heavily on direct anger at GOP officials and institutions?
I'm hoping that his difficulties with the Republican party combined with Cruz absorbing all of Kasich's votes will lead to the downfall of Trump. I understand why he's gotten as far as he has but it still is terrifying that this man has actually gotten this far based off his actions during this campaign. Whatever happens ill be happy as long as Trump doesn't win.
President Barack Obama kicked off a day full of events for the queens 90th birthday party. Which started with them having to read a bedtime story. Obama and the First Lady then meet up with the Duck and Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince Harry. Which is making this the second time that the Royal Family and The First Family are meeting up. Obama going as far to sing for the queen.
This article talks about the ongoing issue concerning transgender individuals and public bathrooms. Personally, I think that the whole situation is ridiculous. People should be able to use whatever bathroom they feel like. I understand that people could try to abuse the system, but the risks do not outweigh the rewards. People should not have to use bathrooms that do not match their gender identity. We need to educate society about the transgender community and what gender identity is. Someone could have male genitalia and still identify as a female. We should not discriminate against these people and force them to do things that they're uncomfortable with. If people are REALLY that bothered by transgender individuals using their bathrooms, then they have bigger problems than what they have been fighting against.
I agree with you Brandon. I never understood what the big controversy was about what bathrooms people from the trans community get to use. Everyone should be able to go into the bathroom they feel the most comfortable going in. Went I use the restroom I pay very little attention to the people around me and go in and out and I'm sure the same applies to everyone else. If using a public bathroom with a transgender person makes people uncomfortable then they should avoid public bathrooms. Some people just need to suck it up and think about how much more uncomfortable a transgender person must feel using a restroom they don't feel they belong in than them having to share the restroom with them. No one is asking them to share a stall.
Personally, I don't agree with you because I wouldn't want a man in the restroom with my daughter, and I wouldn't want a woman in the bathroom with my son. It's asking for trouble, and people can live with going to their birth gender bathrooms. It's not about transgendered people. And it isn't infringing upon any rights either. There already have been cases of grown men going into restrooms and changing rooms at pools and stripping in front of little girls. I don't care what you identify as, that is not okay and you should know that. It's not discriminatory, bathrooms don't have anything to do with gender identidy, literally they just have to do with what you're peeing with.
http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/22/europe/obama-british-reaction/index.html This article is how President Obama went to Great Britain and suggested that Britons should vote to stay in the European Union instead of pulling it out. While he is certainly allowed to have an opinion, I don’t think he should be advocating too much for something in a different country because it’s not really his business. People also said he’s hypocritical because he would never let the U.S. be in the United Kingdom, which I agree with. If you wouldn’t do something yourself, you shouldn’t really tell other people to do it either.
This article is about not having a lot of Asian actors being casted in movies and tv shows. The author states that when Asians are casted in movies and tv shows, they usually get stereotyped roles or characters that were originally Asian go to white actors. The excuse that directors and screenwriters make is that there are no A-list Asian actors but I don't think that's an excuse at all and it's completely irrelevant. Asians aren't the only minority who are left out in Hollywood either.
This article is about minorities being underrepresented in movies more specifically Asian Americans. The article talks about the trend of whitewashing movies with traditionally and originally Asian roles. It also talked about the trend of these movies flopping because of the amount of people who boycott movies that whitewash their cast. I agree with this article because I couldn't believe that they had Emma Stone, a red headed blue eyed white woman, play the role of a Chinese American in Aloha. It's also very frustrating that no matter how many movies suffer as a result of their white casts, Hollywood doesn't get the message and continued to cut diversity out of their movies
This article talks about the many reasons behind low voter turn out. It talks about how our rights our being infringed upon by how difficult it is to vote, and that it needs to be fixed. How ever, with our federalist system, every state is pretty much free to do voting processes however they want as long as they follow a couple rules. It does bring up a good point that state and federal primaries should be consolidated, but in reality if the writer of this article really wanted a better voting system, they would probably have to be willing to give up more rights to the government to organize it in a better, more efficient and easy-to-use way for every citizen.
This article is about how Chicago’s cops and courts are corrupt. The author was a clerk in Cook County and talked about his experiences there and how he was taught lessons in criminal law knowing that it was all wrong. The judges and cops would talk disrespectfully about anyone with brown skin. Between 2008 and 2015, black people accounted for 74% of the 404 people shot. The author interviewed judges and prosecutors and they admitted that police perjury was part of the court system in Cook County. Racism in the courts is a huge problem that we need to work on fixing and it's going to take a lot of work to get rid of but it definitely needs to happen.
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/24/opinion/campaign-stops/can-clinton-feel-the-bern.html?ref=opinion&_r=0 This article is generally about what Mrs. Clinton's options are in the campaign and what Bernie should do if he loses. Personally i hope Sanders wins the vote but its likely that Clinton will get the nomination. If i was Sanders i would do everything I could to make sure than A, your voters are united with the party as a whole to take on Trump and B, that you can get Clinton to accept your views and try to push her campaign more progressive. It goes on to explain how on the Republican side 33% of Trump voters would not vote for Cruz if he won, and also how Trump has stated there will be violence in the streets if he does not win the nomination. This is both disgusting and non-surprising coming from Donald Trump.
I chose this article solely on the it's title, which is "Can Clinton Feel the Bern." It is all about how a divided party can lead to problems for the person who wins the primaries. These problems include losing votes to the other party or on of the losing candidates supporters not even showing up to election day. The article also mentions that this is an even bigger problem with the republican party because they are split three ways instead of two.
This article goes into detail about the secret process of courting delegates before a contested party convention. The last one occurred in 1976 between Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan, and the article goes into some details about some of the things that can be taken away from that convention as it applies to the likely contested convention this year. The Cruz and Kasich campaigns are using people who worked on staffs during the delegate hunt in 1976 to try to have more expertise on the process of finding and convincing state delegates to vote for their candidate once they are unbound on the second wave of voting. It makes sense that the only campaign to not do this is the Trump campaign, as they have always been lagging behind in ground game compared to the others. Cruz seems like the most prepared person for the event, and it seems like he's acted out every possible way an election could go down since he was 7.
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/23/opinion/invest-in-mental-health.html?ref=opinion&_r=0 This article was about how the government should invest more in mental health and their institutions. I have to agree with this because the problem of mental health is rising more and more each year, especially those ones in teens.
http://mobile.nytimes.com/2016/04/23/opinion/can-the-flint-prosecutions-succeed.html This article talks about the still not ending situation in flint Michigan. I have already said this once but I feel the finger pointing and scapegoating should be dealt with after the people being poison have a safe water choice. This article does bring up a lot of good points that the people responsible for the crisis might get away with it. Since it would be insanely hard to prove intentional poisoning or misconduct the people who do fall will only be charged with misdemeanors. Also the article says that high ranking officials will also probably not be charged because of lack of evidence.
I believe the public officials did not try to poison Flint intentionally. I didn't realize they were trying to prove that in court. However, I think they have a strong case for negligence. This never should have happened, and when it did, the response should have been quicker rather than the officials denying it for months. I sincerely hope everyone involved with the mess in Flint is punished because the effect of their recklessness has caused the citizens of Flint irreparable damage. How is one supposed to sell their home when the housing market is ruined by this scandal? Not to mention the kids who will need lifetime care. Perhaps their actions aren't enough to be criminal convictions, but the citizens will certainly win the law suits. Also, the politicians who are involved are probably ruined in politics, hopefully,
The author of the article makes the claim that trump is starting a conversation about the manner in which we nominate candidates. It also mentions how caucuses are pretty undemocratic. I also see Trump's point. If he gets the most delegates, he should be the nominee. Some people mention two thirds of Republican voters have voted against Trump in order to justify not giving him the nomination. However, even more Republican voters have voted against Cruz and Kasich. The nominating process is unfair. Trump still sucks though.
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/22/opinion/in-hamiltons-debt.html?ref=opinion&_r=0 This article discusses the recent changes that were announced to the faces of our currency. Harriet Tubman is set to replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill. The article praises this change because it was well needed, but mostly it praises the choice to keep Alexander Hamilton. Hamilton is considered by many to be the father of our country's economy. He believed in the national government taking on all of the state's debts and raising tariffs to pay them off. His goal was to make America's image as a "reliable borrower." Also, with the recent Broadway musical "Hamilton" becoming so popular so fast, I think there would be uproar if he was taken away.
This article is about how the Democratic Party has gotten more liberal since the 2008 primary, but not to a degree that it wouldn't be a shock to see Bernie Sanders win the nomination. Since 2008, the number of very liberal voters in the Democratic Party has increased in almost every state to a double digit degree. This would be an advantage for a very liberal candidate like Bernie Sanders, but the number of very liberal voters is still not the largest base of the Democratic Party that will be the decider of the nomination. The crossover voting of moderates to abandon Clinton and go to Sanders would have to be an enormous amount to earn him the nomination. Many of Sanders' very liberal base is composed of college age voters that are not good to depend on to make it to the polls. It paints a positive light in the possibility of a candidate with the same ideals as Sanders getting the Democratic nomination down the line, but right now there just isn't enough. The parties keep getting further and further from the middle in a post-Bush moderate world, and as the parties go further and further to their corners so will the voters.

http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/22/politics/us-nuclear-iran-purchase/index.html I agree with hannah that yes its a good idea that were taking it away from them but if they can get there hands on that much buying it makes no differnce to them becuase they can just buy or make more and on top of them making it now they have money to get things they need other than the materials they can make. we should just blow them up like we do any other time and take what we want

ReplyDeleteIt's interesting how history seems to repeat itself in regards to conflict between presidential hopefuls.

ReplyDeleteUnifying the Democratic party sounds like something that will not happen soon.

ReplyDeleteLooks like that Trump and the Republicans are not on the same page.

ReplyDeletePresident Barack Obama kicked off a day full of events for the queens 90th birthday party. Which started with them having to read a bedtime story. Obama and the First Lady then meet up with the Duck and Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince Harry. Which is making this the second time that the Royal Family and The First Family are meeting up. Obama going as far to sing for the queen.

ReplyDeleteThis article talks about the ongoing issue concerning transgender individuals and public bathrooms.
DeletePersonally, I don't agree with you because I wouldn't want a man in the restroom with my daughter, and I wouldn't want a woman in the bathroom with my son.
Deletehttp://www.cnn.com/2016/04/22/europe/obama-british-reaction/index.html
ReplyDeleteThis article is how President Obama went to Great Britain and suggested that Britons should vote to stay in the European Union instead of pulling it out. While he is certainly allowed to have an opinion, I don’t think he should be advocating too much for something in a different country because it’s not really his business. People also said he’s hypocritical because he would never let the U.S. be in the United Kingdom, which I agree with. If you wouldn’t do something yourself, you shouldn’t really tell other people to do it either.
http://mobile.nytimes.com/2016/04/23/opinion/why-wont-hollywood-cast-asian-actors.html
ReplyDeleteThis article is about not having a lot of Asian actors being casted in movies and tv shows. The author states that when Asians are casted in movies and tv shows, they usually get stereotyped roles or characters that were originally Asian go to white actors. The excuse that directors and screenwriters make is that there are no A-list Asian actors but I don't think that's an excuse at all and it's completely irrelevant. Asians aren't the only minority who are left out in Hollywood either.
http://mobile.nytimes.com/2016/04/23/opinion/why-wont-hollywood-cast-asian-actors.html
ReplyDeleteThis article is about minorities being underrepresented in movies more specifically Asian Americans.

ReplyDeleteThis article talks about the many reasons behind low voter turn out. It talks about how our rights our being infringed upon by how difficult it is to vote, and that it needs to be fixed. How ever, with our federalist system, every state is pretty much free to do voting processes however they want as long as they follow a couple rules. It does bring up a good point that state and federal primaries should be consolidated, but in reality if the writer of this article really wanted a better voting system, they would probably have to be willing to give up more rights to the government to organize it in a better, more efficient and easy-to-use way for every citizen.
http://mobile.nytimes.com/2016/04/15/opinion/chicagos-racist-cops-and-racist-courts.html
ReplyDeleteThis article is about how Chicago’s cops and courts are corrupt. Racism in the courts is a huge problem that we need to work on fixing and it's going to take a lot of work to get rid of but it definitely needs to happen.
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/24/opinion/campaign-stops/can-clinton-feel-the-bern.html?ref=opinion&_r=0
ReplyDeleteThis article is generally about what Mrs. This is both disgusting and non-surprising coming from Donald Trump.
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/24/opinion/campaign-stops/can-clinton-feel-the-bern.html?ref=opinion&_r=0
ReplyDeleteI chose this article solely on the it's title, which is "Can Clinton Feel the Bern." It is all about how a divided party can lead to problems for the person who wins the primaries. These problems include losing votes to the other party or on of the losing candidates supporters not even showing up to election day. The article also mentions that this is an even bigger problem with the republican party because they are split three ways instead of two.
http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/behind-the-scenes-with-2016s-delegate-hunters/
ReplyDeleteThis article goes into detail about the secret process of courting delegates before a contested party convention.

ReplyDeleteThis article was about how the government should invest more in mental health and their institutions. I have to agree with this because the problem of mental health is rising more and more each year, especially those ones in teens.
http://mobile.nytimes.com/2016/04/23/opinion/can-the-flint-prosecutions-succeed.html
ReplyDeleteThis article talks about the still not ending situation in flint Michigan.
Also, the politicians who are involved are probably ruined in politics, hopefully,
Deletehttp://www.cnn.com/2016/04/15/opinions/is-trump-right-about-rigged-process-hasen/index.html
ReplyDeleteThe author of the article makes the claim that trump is starting a conversation about the manner in which we nominate candidates. Trump still sucks though.
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/22/opinion/in-hamiltons-debt.html?ref=opinion&_r=0
ReplyDeleteThis article discusses the recent changes that were announced to the faces of our currency. His goal was to make America's image as a "reliable borrower." Also, with the recent Broadway musical "Hamilton" becoming so popular so fast, I think there would be uproar if he was taken away.
http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/democrats-have-gotten-more-liberal-since-2008-but-not-enough-to-nominate-sanders/
ReplyDeleteThis article is about how the Democratic Party has gotten more liberal since the 2008 primary, but not to a degree that it wouldn't be a shock to see Bernie Sanders win the nomination.
