This is an article about the debate determining life sentencing without parole for children. On Monday, it was ruled that people who were sentenced to life in prison without parole as juveniles have the right to seek parole. Some of the arguments to back this up would be that it violates the Eighth Amendment, prohibiting "cruel and unusual punishment". I think that they view life in prison as too much of a cruel punishment for children/teens still developing. I definitely see where they are coming from, but what about the children/teens who will take advantage of this? Do harm knowing that they won't be sentenced to life in prison? It can be very risky, but I do see where both sides are coming from.
I definitely agree that juveniles should have the right to seek parole. That type of sentencing for someone under the age of 18 is a bit extreme. However, it also depends on the severity of their crime in definitely.
This essay talks about how lawmakers before would think that drug addiction is focused on certain poor minority groups as well as certain races. This has changed because the addiction problem has finally hit the "white America". There is a bill called the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act, currently pending in both houses of the Congress. The purpose of this bill is to expand the help for drug uses nationwide. I believe that this would benefit the decrease of our country's drug problems by a decent amount because people would have somewhere to go to help with their addiction. It is one of the toughest things to overcome!
I agree with you that this would definitely help the addiction problems that we face today. I feel that as we continue in time, more and more people are getting crafter with the use of chemicals and drugs. I think that along with this bill we should have requirements that forbid someone owning any type of chemistry tools, unless they are a registered as a chemist or chemistry teacher. I too feel that addiction is a very hard thing to overcome but with the use of this new bill, I think that this goal that seems impossible to others, will soon become possible.
It's very sad how rampant drugs and illegal substances are becoming in our country. The only way to combat this is to get people help or to highly regulate it. I really hope this bill gets passed. Even if it is though, we need to do something to change our culture because drugs are becoming a "cool" thing. High regulation will decrease this, but it will be difficult to do and very invasive.
I think that requiring college athletes to get electrocardiograms is a great idea. Similarly to how high school athletes have to get physicals, college athletes need to ensure they are in good condition to play their sports. An electrocardiogram is more in-depth than the typical physical examination would go, but college athletics are a lot more vigorous than high school sports. The rate of sudden deaths among college athletes has risen to about 1 in every 5,200, which may not seem like much, but there are around 460,000 in NCAA schools alone. That mean approximately 88 college athletes are estimated to die each year due to sudden deaths. If electrocardiograms can help to possibly lower that number, then why wouldn't schools require them?
I agree with having electrocardiograms because yes, college sports are a lot more vigorous than that of high school sports. College athletes need to be in top health all year around because their sports never really stop.
Yes, I agree. This seems like something that can help athlete's health and, as a bonus, not affect their career. Though, I think it may be hard for all colleges to start doing this. Being that requiring things in a school never seems to catch on that much, more so in college schools. But I feel something like this, a device that has the potential to save some lives, will be viewed favorably.
Casey Neistat is a film maker that lives in the heart of New York City. On January 25, 2016 Casey and a couple friends went out in the blizzard with a jeep and a snowboard and a HDMI cable to tow Casey. The streets where shut down and it was illegal to drive on the streets unless for emergency vehicles. Casey and his friends went out any way and made an epic video of them snowboarding through Times square and other main streets and caught the eye of many, even other countries. Now Casey did not get in trouble but the cops did stop him but the cops actually supported what they where doing and just let them do there thing.
This is an article that is comparing Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler. However, this is coming from the famous Anne Frank's stepsister. Eva Schloss says that Trump is using the same rhetoric that she witnessed Hitler use while on campaign. She criticized Trump for his racist remarks and thinks that if history were to ever repeat itself. It would be when Trump gets elected president. She also refers back to how happy everyone was when the Berlin wall was destroyed, but now Trump wants to build another big wall to keep immigrants out of our country. I find this very ironic and I also think once again that Trump is not the right person for the Oval Office.
I agree that Trump is a very racist human but I do not believe that he would do the same bad events that Hitler did. I also believe that we would not let Trump do the drastic things Hitler did.
I personally think that our government would never let history repeat itself and create another Hitler. The reason why Hitler was able to gain power and do everything he did was because Germany was in a very deep depression after WWI. Imagine our Great Depression, multiply that by five, and then you get Germany's depression after WWI. Germany's government at the time was also failing to help it's citizens. So many german citizens when Hitler promised to fix everything, they believed him. This is not the case with our country however. We are not in a depression and our government is not failing. Even if Trump does get elected to office, and that's a big if, he will never be able to do anything remotely close to the stuff Hitler did.
This is an interesting find Curtiss. Seeing as the stepsister of Anne Frank doesn't seem to like Donald Trump. Seeing as she has seen one of the worst people to ever lead a nation, Adolf Hitler. It's interesting to hear this comparison, but not shocking, seeing as I have heard Donald Trump compared to Mussolini before for his ideals which are seen as textbook definition fascist. Let's just hope history isn't one to repeat itself this time.
I dont thing at the debate they should have mocked Trump. They needed to sway voters over to their side and bringing trump in does not help he has a led and will not lose it if you waste time cheap shoting him.

But he was trialed as an adult for life in prison without parole. It crazy how they are willing put someone on trial that is our age. Racial tensions continue to grow, our prisons and jails have less and less people that are white compared to any other race. There are tons of African Americans imprisoned. "For example, of the 247 people serving juvenile life sentences, 199 are African-American. The situations is worse in East Baton Rouge Parish, where Mr. Buchanan was tried. This opinion piece from Senator Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts is a very interesting one to read. She shows a very impartial perspective on the matter of the presidency, how the candidates pitch their legislative agendas, yet she also brings up that we as voters should consider what the president can do on the executive level. Referring to the recent executive actions president Obama has taken in the wake of a republican congress. With this she brings out her real message, strong federal enforcement of regulations, especially when it comes to wall street. Given that Elizabeth Warren is a well noted progressive Democrat, it's not hard to see why she would support a president who can regulate the big banks, ensuring that something like the crash in 2008 never happens again. Now which of the Democratic candidates she supports, that is up to interpretation.
This article is about how Donald Trump was the star of the republican debate on thursday, even though he was not there. Since he was not there, many other candidates tried to make jabs at him, but they just kept bringing him up over and over again. Before the debate the founder of Fox News, Rupert Murdoch, tweeted, "Republican candidates must be looking forward to tonight’s debate. Speaking without Donald getting all attention," but about half the time they spoke, it was about Trump. So instead of getting ahead by not having everyone focus on him, they made sure that everyone noticed him.
This unfortunately happens way too often. People focus on bad things and things they find funny instead of the important things. People are also so focused on bringing others down instead of building themselves or others up. People need to focus on important issues instead of the entertaining ones.
It is simply crazy how much impact what have on the environment. If a piece of land does not fit us, we terraform it to suit our needs. Does a ship have to go around a continent to get where it is going? Build a canal through it. It's is kind of funny to know that some people think that repercussions from construction projects are not real, even simple ones like putting down road or making a park. Those add up overtime. In the article it is stating that there is going to be a massive cost for the environment because of the canal allowing foreign fish into a different sea. That may not sound like much, however, it opens up the huge possibility that those fish is going to completely wreck the ecosystem in that part of the ocean. Plus it is also going to affect us too, more primarily, fishers. They're going to have problems with getting their fish because of the rampant changes that are going to/have happened in the ecosystem.
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/01/29/opinion/righting-a-grave-injustice-in-louisiana.html?partner=rssnyt&emc=rss&_r=0 This story seems really weird to me. First of how incredibly unlucky most you be that the first punch thrown to kill someone. I feel like we are not getting the full story here. I do agree that laws need to be changed for kids to be tried as adults but for misdemeanors not for intentional murder. The reporter did not help their case when they decided to use the prisoner as an example. For major felonies kids should be charged as adults. I just can not see the logic behind i didn't mean to kill anyone. I don't believe you can ever come back frm killing someone especially if it was not accidental.
http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/26/opinions/sutter-solitary-confinement-obama-update/index.html This article is about how Obama wants to ban solitary confinement. I think this is a good idea because it doesn't help them it all, it actually can make things worse. Solitary confinement can cause mental illnesses, depression, social problems, and many other things. People in solitary confinement need help, not to get worse, but they can only get help by being around other people. In order to grow, people need to be nurtured and helped, not forced to be alone, their growth would only be put on hold.
I agree with you Alyssa. Obama is banning this for adolescents and that is very good especially if the goal is to rehabilitate the inmate. Solitary confinement can have many negative psychological effects on a person that hardens a criminal even more. Banning solitary confinement is a step in the right direction when it comes to making correctional facilities places for rehabilitation.
I agree with you Alyssa. Solitary confinement doesn't help anyone. I agree that it can make a person’s condition worse. There are even studies to prove this. These people should be working on ways to improve themselves and not just be alone for the rest of their lives. People most likely don't want to take the time to fix people like this but I'm sure it would take less time to help the person get better than having to monitor them for the rest of their lives. I think Obama should ban solitary confinement.
I agree with you Alyssa to a certain extent. Some people who are put into solitary confinement should be in there. But the only reason they should be in solitary confinement is because they are a mortal danger to others. They shouldnt be in there for not following guidelines or making the occasional trouble.
This article is about how Donald Trump skipped the GOP debate because he didn't like the debate commentators. The author says that although Trump skipped the debate his presence was still very much there because the other candidates always somehow managed to bring him up time and time again. Many thought that this would finally be a chance to debate legitimately without the constant invective. Trumps absence made no impact.
This article is about Europe taking in refugees. Some countries don't want to take in refugees and believe their county would be safer that way. A quota system was proposed by the European Commission. The European Union would have to decide how to distribute refugees and how many to take in. The system would also allow unwilling countries to bribe other countries to keep refugees from coming in. I think this system would be a good idea but countries shouldn't be allowed to bribe other countries to keep refugees out.
This article is about a German woman who finds out that her grandfathr was a Nazi. This was so sad not just because of her grandfather but because her life. Her mother left her when she was 3 years old, and she was made fun of because she was mixed. This article taked about she always believed that something was missing and that if she found out about her real family then, they might fill the hole. It stated that she wrote a book about her grandfather. The book takes about because she was mix woman that her grandfather would kill her without a second thought.
This article get me really mad because it cause a little girls death. Its about how a father is charged for the death of his deauther.Ciara Meyer was killed by a police constable who was serving eviction papers at their apartment in Perry County on January 11. But thanks to her dad who pulled out a gun, the cop was force to pull out his gun and shot. The shot want through the arm of the dad and hit the little girl.
http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2016/01/26/reducing-preventable-harm-in-hospitals/?ref=opinion&_r=0 This editorial discusses the number of people who are killed due to medical personnel error. It is definitely a lot of unfortunate preventable deaths, but it is also still a low percentage. This is a difficult topic because we can't expect people to be perfect but in such a profession, perfection is crucial. The author mentions that checklists for simple tasks reduced accidents by 66%, however, the problem is getting doctors to accept the checklist. It's disappointing that they wouldn't want to take such a thing seriously when it could save a patient's life.
It's crazy to think that this happens with the people who are supposed to be in charge of saving lives. But just as with any other job, there will be people who do the bare minimum, and mess up certain things. But instead of messing up someones order they're taking someones life. Perhaps in the upcoming future with the evolution of technology, humans will be used less and robot type things more to save more lives.
This article is about the upcoming New Hampshire Primary, and why John Kashich finishing second in it would be as bad as Donald Trump winning it for the GOP. At this point the sure favorite in the primary is Trump, but second place is up for grabs, and at this point it's almost like all of the other candidates the GOP would find more favorable to represent them in the general election are unified against Trump, but are splitting votes they need to beat him for themselves. If they could all get those votes directed to one person, they could beat Trump, but because of the current division among the other candidates, they cannot. The current favorite to win second place in the New Hampshire Primary is a surging John Kasich, and it's not that surprising given that it is a more moderate state that caters to how he is running, and that he is focusing his entire campaign there. Kasich is a threat to the GOP in almost the opposite way of Trump, where Trump is too radically conservative for most general voters, Kasich is much more moderate than those leading the GOP would want their tentpole candidate to be.
One of the world's longest human rights record is held by China. China has this record due to the long history of negative treatment towards its citizens. I think that obviously if a country treats it citizens badly then that doesn't reflect well . Apparently China has been expanding its reach to other countries like Hong Kong . Hong Kong is angered with the abduction of critics whom they believe Chiba plays a large role in. One man fled Japan and was reported missing in january. Another one was a Swedish naturalized citizen born in China living in Hong Kong also went missing and they are predicted to be abductions from Chinese agents .
This article is about the author discussing his opinion on all of the major candidates for the GOP nomination as the Iowa Primary is shortly coming up. It seems the author really does not like any of the candidates at all, and especially hates Donald Trump (like most of us) so much so that he says he will try not to even discuss him at length. He does come forward with a positive opinion if John Kasich or Rand Paul were to win Iowa in a longshot victory, but I still don't think he cares much for either of them. It seems like these two are the hottest, if you could say that, candidates for the liberal voters on the outside looking in, but they're still not well liked.
Ted Cruz has fallen back in the presidential race. He is being attacked from a lot of sides and has recently been called a fake. At this point many are attacking him and are against him trying to expose “who he really is “. Overall I think that at this point Cruz's camping is almost over. He started riding strong and getting a lot of votes yet now it has declined and at the author says he just wants to get out of Iowa. Marco Rubio said on Thursday that “ This is the lie that Ted's campaign is built on, and Rand touched upon it -- that he's the most conservative guy, and everyone else is a -- you know, everyone else is a RINO,". At this point there is definitely bias because cruz is being attacked like Ben Carson has .
Last week in AP English, we had the chance to read Dr. King's Letters from a Birmingham Jail and listen to his speech. This article discusses how we have come very far, but we still have a long way to go. It also discusses how many components of his speech are still relevant today. When we studied two of his works, we were asked to think about what makes Dr. King's speech so memorable. Many people who are much smarter than I say that it the speech is memorable because it provides hope, and promises a brighter future. And really that's all that people want.
This article is about how the US and the U.K. spied on the Israeli drones. Now, I already see a problem with this. Don't we as a nation get angry if someone else is caught spying on us? Don't we normally sentence them to death if not life for being caught spying? So why would we spy on someone else? Also, didn't we get one of our own in trouble for spying as well? The NSA and the GCHQ are refusing to acknowledge any of the pictures or information that has been found, but it's not surprising. Of course they'd try to play dumb, it's a huge offense and could potentially lose our ally. It's a risky move and now it's gone public.

Given that Elizabeth Warren is a well noted progressive Democrat, it's not hard to see why she would support a president who can regulate the big banks, ensuring that something like the crash in 2008 never happens again. Now which of the Democratic candidates she supports, that is up to interpretation.

ReplyDeleteThis article is about how Donald Trump was the star of the republican debate on thursday, even though he was not there.

ReplyDeleteIt is simply crazy how much impact what have on the environment.

ReplyDeleteThis story seems really weird to me. I don't believe you can ever come back frm killing someone especially if it was not accidental.
http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/26/opinions/sutter-solitary-confinement-obama-update/index.html
ReplyDeleteThis article is about how Obama wants to ban solitary confinement.
DeleteI agree with you Alyssa.
DeleteI agree with you Alyssa to a certain extent. Some people who are put into solitary confinement should be in there. But the only reason they should be in solitary confinement is because they are a mortal danger to others. They shouldnt be in there for not following guidelines or making the occasional trouble.
Deletehttp://mobile.nytimes.com/2016/01/29/opinion/campaign-stops/republican-debate-stars-the-ghost-of-donald-trump.html
ReplyDeleteThis article is about how Donald Trump skipped the GOP debate because he didn't like the debate commentators. The author says that although Trump skipped the debate his presence was still very much there because the other candidates always somehow managed to bring him up time and time again. Many thought that this would finally be a chance to debate legitimately without the constant invective. Trumps absence made no impact.
http://mobile.nytimes.com/2016/01/30/opinion/ending-the-refugee-deadlock.html
ReplyDeleteThis article is about Europe taking in refugees.

ReplyDeleteThis article is about a German woman who finds out that her grandfathr was a Nazi. The book takes about because she was mix woman that her grandfather would kill her without a second thought.
http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/29/us/pennsylvania-ciara-meyer-shooting-father-charged/index.html
ReplyDeleteThis article get me really mad because it cause a little girls death. Its about how a father is charged for the death of his deauther.Ciara Meyer was killed by a police constable who was serving eviction papers at their apartment in Perry County on January 11. But thanks to her dad who pulled out a gun, the cop was force to pull out his gun and shot. The shot want through the arm of the dad and hit the little girl.
http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2016/01/26/reducing-preventable-harm-in-hospitals/?ref=opinion&_r=0
ReplyDeleteThis editorial discusses the number of people who are killed due to medical personnel error.
Deletehttp://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/2016/01/20/john_kasich_s_new_hampshire_surge_is_good_news_for_donald_trump_ted_cruz.html
ReplyDeleteThis article is about the upcoming New Hampshire Primary, and why John Kashich finishing second in it would be as bad as Donald Trump winning it for the GOP.

ReplyDeleteOne of the world's longest human rights record is held by China. Another one was a Swedish naturalized citizen born in China living in Hong Kong also went missing and they are predicted to be abductions from Chinese agents .
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/01/30/opinion/an-iowa-to-do-list.html?ref=opinion
ReplyDeleteThis article is about the author discussing his opinion on all of the major candidates for the GOP nomination as the Iowa Primary is shortly coming up. It seems like these two are the hottest, if you could say that, candidates for the liberal voters on the outside looking in, but they're still not well liked.
http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/29/politics/ted-cruz-iowa-under-siege/index.html
ReplyDeleteTed Cruz has fallen back in the presidential race.

ReplyDeleteLast week in AP English, we had the chance to read Dr. And really that's all that people want.
http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/29/politics/us-uk-israel-drones/index.html
ReplyDeleteThis article is about how the US and the U.K. spied on the Israeli drones.
