Just a thought:
Only one person blogged about the Brian Williams incident that blew up last week- In light of our recent study of the media, I would encourage you to look into it and let me know your thoughts.
Also, Alabama approved gay marriage this week... that's right, ALABAMA. What do we know about Alabama that makes this especially significant; and should this be considered a strong statement in the gay-rights battle?

ReplyDeleteThis is a big surprise due to the fact that the South is Republican and that is usually against their beliefs towards same sex marriage. The fact that the number of counties that are against issuing this license has lessened says a lot. People must be looking at things in a big picture and going against what most people in the South would say to this.
I definitely agree it's a huge surprise. It's interesting to think about how people's views may have changed over the past several years, and to think how far issues like this have come.. Our state still hasn't legalized it, and that's just as shocking considering the number of states that has legalized gay marriage.
DeleteI don't really think that this is too much of a surprise honestly. I believe sooner rather than later all states will legalize gay marriage. Even though the state as a whole approved it, a lot of county judges refused the ruling. But the U.S. ordered the judges in Alabama to legalize it.
DeleteI think this is shocking, Alabama and the South in general has been very against gay marriage, and at one point was very strong into slavery. The changes happening in our lifetime are incredible, and we're one step closer to total equality, this shows even the most difficult and strong willed states can change so I think In the near future we will reach complete equality.
Deletei mean theres nothing more to say that hasnt already been said. its very jaw dropping to hear alabama passing this. i mean south is generally the hq of conservatives. and alamaba is one of those hardcore conservative states. so to hear them passing such a thing as to GAY MARRIAGE. times are changing.

ReplyDeleteThis story really shocked me and of course the media blew it up, but for somebody would is considered a "role model" and is supposedly against stuff like this, he really proved himself. The story he gave might of been an attempt to stay relevant within everything going on overseas and Brian probably felt he could get more views if he "went to Iraq" and experienced things first hand.

ReplyDeleteIn this article, the author writes about the divided opinions surrounding the Brian Williams issue. Many national media members are calling for his job, while others are accepting his mistake and wanting to move on. My biggest problem with this issue is that national media members and journalists are supposed to document truth. They surely will include bias, but the American public is supposed to be able to trust the facts that they report. This story does not just ruin the integrity of Brian Williams, but of the entire national media. You never like to see one mistake ruin someone’s entire career, but the lack of journalistic responsibility shown in this matter probably warrants it.
I think that Brian Williams just made a mistake and as far as I know, this his first, or at least one of very few major ones. I think he should be given another chance and we should just move on. I do understand, however, that the topic of war is felt very strongly by others, but I think the main reason for this blow up in the media is just sensationalism that will hopefully soon blow over.
DeleteI cannot agree more. I think the current decision to suspend him for half a year is the right thing to do. He certainly diminished his own reputation and dignity alone; that should be enough. This makes one wonder what else is being altered by the media.

ReplyDeleteIn this article, the author writes about many judges in Alabama refusing to grant same-sex marriages, despite a federal court’s ruling otherwise. This should be seen as no surprise, as Alabama is one of the most conservative, christian-influenced states in the union. Regardless of the resistance outlined in this story, it is becoming increasingly clear that same-sex marriage will be legalized across the country. Resistance will not go away, especially considering the strength of the church in the southern part of the United States, but it is more or less futile. Now that the ball is rolling, it is going to be very, very hard to stop.
This article is very interesting because nobody wouldve expected Alabama of all states to legalize same sex marriage. I expect other states to start granting this now because it may become sort of a trend now that one state that was unexpected, maybe the rest will. It shows that Alabama definately didnt want to pass this as the article says that the federal court ruled this, not the judges in Alabama.

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, when crimes like this happen concerned with a gun carry permit, it's the person holding the gun, not the law itself. Well, at least more so the person than the law. Although the article did take me surprise when it was said that the law makes gun access easier in places such as schools, churches, etc. Accidents happen, but when the number is in the 700's, I think it's time to bring about changes to legislation concerning gun carrying laws.
Over 300 million people live in this country. 700 is a great number considering our population. I know that is bad to rationalize thing like this, but it needs to be said. So don't flame that's the system is broken. Yes in a perfect world that number would be 0. However we don't live in a perfect world. People who want a gun will get a gun. If the government bans all guns then we will see a massive increase of deaths like we saw with drugs. We're supposed to learn from our past mistakes.
Deletehttp://op-talk.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/02/11/can-jon-stewart-be-replaced/?ref=opinion
ReplyDeleteAround the same time that it was announced that Brian Williams would be suspended for six months without pay, Jon Stewart announced that he would eventually be leaving the Daily Show. Deadline Hollywood, has Larry Wilmore at the top of their list for possible replacements, claiming that he has become attuned to national politics and can carry a TV show. Eliana Dokterman thinks that the replacement should be a woman, just to change things up. Another idea, which I personally would like to see, is Brian Williams and Jon Stewart just switching positions because Stewart has become more serious and Williams more of a comedian. I think this would be really cool to see and I feel that it will ease the pain because we can still see both of these people we are used to, just in different places.
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/13/us/politics/obama-signs-suicide-prevention-for-veterans-act-into-law.html?ref=us
ReplyDeleteThis article talks about an act that president Obama has recently signed that will help with suicide prevention among our veterans. The Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans Act will focus on this problem that will help veterans deal with post-traumatic stress. This article says about 22 American veterans commit suicide every day. That is too much and we have to help the people that are protecting this country.
http://takingnote.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/02/12/f-b-i-director-james-comey-on-how-everyones-a-little-bit-racist/?_r=0
ReplyDeleteCould it really be true? This statement seems out of place because every race seems to be coexisting and getting along with all the other races. Everyone seems to have opposite race friends and does not seem to treat them any differently. I feel like this statement is being made because of that shooting and whether it was a race issue or whether it was over a parking spot.

ReplyDeleteEveryone seems to be trying to get rid of religion in every aspect of everyday life minus the privacy in someones home or church. But this? This seems to go against what they have been trying to do for many years. Its okay for Congress to hear a sermon but religion is not allowed in schools. Teachers cant even really talk about how they feel or what it is that they believe.
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/13/opinion/hillary-clinton-and-bill-frist-on-health-care-for-americas-kids.html?ref=opinion&_r=0
ReplyDeleteThis article is about saving childrens insurance and the afordable childcare act. I think that this is very important because its not fair for children not to be given healthcare when they have no way to work for it. They obviously cant work which means that they have no other way of receiving insurance. As the article says, "This isn’t about politics. It’s about our kids and our nation’s future. What could be more important than that?" Which is very agreeable in my opinion.
Kids are thus planets future. Unfortunately not everyone can afford to get insurance for there children. This is when the government needs to come in and help us out. Basic medicine can prevent children from growing up and finding out they were born with a.tumor. that kid could grow up to cure cancer because it almost killed him and he didn't want others to have to worry about it. However if he was never testes as a child it never would have been discovered while it was treatable. Kids are nothing ,but potential. Not giving them the chance to make into adulthood makes the future a darker place. Let's give children Healthcare if there parents can't afford it.
DeleteI think that a lot of people are missing the whole concept of insurance. Insurance is not free. And insurance isn't for everyone. When you buy insurance the idea is that you are passing the risk onto someone else for a premium. If you don't have money to pay for your insurance then you must assume that risk yourself. Then if you don't have money for that well that just sucks. The idea of just giving it to everyone who needs it makes me sick. And the idea of penalizing people who don't have it is just retarded. If I don't want to have insurance I shouldn't have to. when they say "affordable insurance" what they really mean is charge someone twice as much as they need to to make up for the person who doesn't pay a dime. It is wrong on so many levels
DeleteFebruary 11th 2015, a trial began sparking a issue on post traumatic stress disorder and its effects on veterans. The trial is on Eddie Ray Routh a veteran marine, who is accused of killing Chris Kyle. Chris kyle is known for being the American Sniper, and having a biography made about him by Clint Eastwood. Chris Kyle, a former navy seal was known for killing 160 and more people in his ten years deployed in Iraq. Routh has confessed to killing Chris Kyle and his friend Littlefield. Chris Kyle was known for helping veterans and Routh happened to be one of them. Routh killed both Chris and Littlefield at a shooting range. Since then the prosecutors are trying to charge him with a life sentence with no parole. His lawyer is trying to get Routh off on an insanity plea due to his PTSD.

ReplyDeleteMr. Obama's easy call on keystone bill
this article is referring to the bill passed by Congress and currently awaiting approval by the President to start construction on the keystone pipeline. The writer of this article thinks that this is a horriable idea. I however disagree. I think that we as a nation need to fave the fact that we are extremely dependent on oil. Why not get our oil from our neighbors from the north? transporting oil by pipeline is by far the cheapest way to do it. Way better then shipping it one barrel at a time across the ocean.
http://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/02/14/us/kitzhaber-resigns-as-governor-of-oregon.html
ReplyDeleteAlthough this doesn't have to do with what you asked, it's about Oregon! In this article Ms. Hayes, the Governors wife admitted to being bisexual (not in the article but previously). The governor however had been questioned, and is currently under investigation for any forms of fraud in the sense of marrying her for certain rights. Ms Hayes had previously married a man so he could remain in the US for 5,000 dollars, and so the case remains open but in order to stay out of any drama the governor resigned so that the media wouldn't be pushed onto him. He is very cooperative, and made it seem as though Ms Hayes was scheming by herself. Before he said this some members he claimed to have known for THIRTY YEARS said he should resign, but when he was so cooperative, said how honest and kind he was. This just shows how our media can effect others looking at topics single sidedly.
http://www.cnn.com/2015/02/13/politics/obama-north-carolina-muslim-shooting/index.html
ReplyDeleteThis is so horrible to think that someone could target not only to hurt someone but to kill someone over their race and beliefs is baffling to me. How closed minded does one have to be. "No one in the United States of America should ever be targeted because of who they are, what they look like, or how they worship," this quote Obama gave in regards to this crime I agree with one hundred percent. America is a place of love and respect I think if we allow things such as this to happen it'll be a big step back in out society. We cannot target people over what others are doing. It's just doing the opposite, by killing people because of race and beliefs all it does is just start war among each other which I think is bad and would lead to bad consequences.
http://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/02/14/us/most-alabama-counties-are-granting-same-sex-marriage-licenses.html
ReplyDeleteI think it's good that Alabama is finally allowing gay marriage. I think that this is huge. Especially since it is Alabama which is a state that is in the Bible Belt. So most of the people there are conservative and don't believe in things such as that. The fact that some of them are finally just learning to accept with it I think is so great. I think this should be taken into a big consideration in the fight for gay rights. This is because if a state as conservative as Alabama starts to allow gay marriage I think that is something big in a favor of gay rights. Hopefully they take that into consideration.
I agree with you Jonatan. I think it's a big step in our nation if we begin to look at everybody equally including gays. I think it's amazing a conservative state such as Alabama would start allowing gay marriage. Also I hope this helps to influence more conservative states. I think this will influence in the fight for gay marriage in a positive way. I'm happy those people will a last be able to marry and be happy.
Deletehttp://www.cnn.com/2015/02/13/americas/canadian-mass-shooting-plot/index.html
ReplyDeleteThis article was about Canadian authorities preventing a mass shooting. three of the suspects were apprehended and the fourth was found dead. The weapons they were going to use were automatic weapons. I'm not sure what type of gun laws they have in Canada but it's terrible they got access to those type of weapons. It would be great if America had stricter gun laws. Just think, we could've avoided a lot of problems relating to gun violence.
http://www.cnn.com/2015/02/11/world/isis-mueller/index.html
ReplyDeleteThis is horrible! I can't believe ISIS just sent the family pictures of the women dead. That is just disrespectful and outrages. The article said she was sold as a bride to a ISIS person. So I wonder if she refused and he punished her. This angers me how badly they treat women and others. They act as if they are materials and not human beings. I don't understand how they can think in such a way. I hope the government begins to investigate ISIS more in order to stop them due to the fact that they always are appearing in the news time after time for murders or something horrible of that sort. I just hope ISIS can be stopped soon.
