http://www.nytimes.com/2014/12/09/opinion/pardon-bush-and-those-who-tortured.html?ref=opinion In this article, the author argues that President Obama should pardon former government officials who planned and authorized the United States torture program. A member of the ACLU, the author writes that it makes him sick thinking of the torture that was executed, but he believes that the only way to prevent future torture is to grant a pardon. While I do not necessarily agree with all of the viewpoints of the author regarding the use of torture, this does seem like the smartest plan of action in preventing torture in the future. By establishing that the torture that occurred was illegal, it sets a legal precedent that could allow for future prosecution if it were to happen again.
I disagree I think that torture should be legal and continue to be legal. It is one of the best and most efficient ways to get information from people who would harm others. I'm not saying that they should kill them or put them physically unable to move but enough to get them to crack under the pressure. Sometimes the worst of punishments could make a better future for the nation as a whole.
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/12/09/opinion/driving-ukrainians-into-putins-arms.html?ref=opinion In this article, the author writes that the citizens of Ukraine find themselves in an increasingly difficult situation, as neo-nazi movements in parts of their country push them towards Russia. It is kind of ironic that this is happening since Russia is in conflict with Ukraine, but the people have nowhere else to go. It is a terrible situation with no perfect answer, but it is hard to blame the Ukrainians for seeking refuge, even if it is in enemy territory.
In this article, the author talks about how the CIA had lied about the torture of prisoners after 9/11, but a new report was released from a Senate investigation saying that the torture was worse than we were lead to believe. However the question still remains of who is responsible, and no one has yet been charged for the crimes. This is unsettling for me because I doubt anything will be done about this, being so far after the fat, and also because the CIA lied multiple times to the public and Congress. I wonder if the president knew. Things like his really make you question who you can believe.
i agree with Treston. this is a chilling thing to hear about how the CIA wanted to keep this hidden. i mean i understand why they would want to keep this confidential and on the down low. they're torturing these people, and they arent getting any effectiveness out of it! it also puts to question what else they have kept from the population. i mean obviously theres so much to hide but just something as simple as brutally torturing prisoners after 9/11 puts to question so much more. *dramatic music*
Very very interesting and it kind of brings up the suspicion of many many more things that could be discovered later on about disasters like that and things that happen around and related to them. Its weird thinking that things that big and harmful could be kept from us for this long. The people that did those things might never come forward and that's scary to think about..
Is this what our government has come to ? That's what we do now? Torture people? After 9/11 America was finally knocked off its high horse and came to the realization that our country is not invincible. We can be harmed just like any other country. But does that allow our government to torture people for the sake of " the people"? When do we stop letting our government do things to people without our consent?
I've come to the conclusion that we can not even trust our own government now-a-days. With all these scandals that continue to leak out and for the denial of our governments involvement is just sickening. Especially with someone like Bin laden who was behind the 9/11 attacks. But yet here out government is, making decisions behind our backs.
I disagree with what was stated. What we need to take into consider Fiona is that we did this too them. We have created a media that looks and hunts for anything to pick at. Everyone wanted him dead , but no one wanted to do what would be needed to get him. These people wanted to do the right thing without letting people know how it was done. We also asked for it. He was killing Americans that we put on the ground to help people. Everyone wanted are soldiers home , but we didn't want to leave those people to die. In the end the government gave us what we wanted , but we have created a society were no one wants go take the blame for how it was done. When looked in to the past everyone has 20 20 vision.
so basically this article is talking about how Bushs era as president seemed to have done so much effect on Obamas terms regarding trying to fighting terrorism in the middle east. Bushs ways on fighting terrorism really messed things up for obama as he entered into office. now Obama has to clean the mess up in hopes to better things. the only problem now is that we have a polarized congress, and a harsh CIA. it makes it impossble to be able to fight against the terrorist organization.
I think this article is pretty pointless and amusing because it lacks so much information. The mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio, wants to pass a bill that would ban horse-drawn carriages and take effect in mid-2016. This is basically all the facts, but many are concerned with how the horses will avoid slaughter and what will happen to the stables that they are kept in. The mayor wants the carriage drivers to become cabbies. This is a waste of Mr. de Blasio's time. No one knows if this is an attempt to help the economy or if he just has a personal vendetta. He calls himself "a defender of unions and small businesses. "
I do not think that they should be allowed to ban horse-drawn carriages. This is some peoples' only way of getting around. I surely hope that they do not start harming the horses. This would be very inconsiderate of them. I understand this in both views, but in the end i don't think that they should be allowed to do this. The carriage drivers shouldn't have to change there job, what if they really like their job?
About five months and 1,100 airstrikes were sent into the American-led war against the Islamic State, and sadly Congress has barely begun to fulfill its constitutional war-making responsibilities. The government doesn't really have time to deal with another crisis.. The article says "The delay also means that President Obama will continue to conduct the war in Iraq and Syria under an outdated 2001 authorization, without explicit approval by Congress and without the necessary limitations that the committee chairman, Robert Menendez, Democrat of New Jersey, and two other members, Tim Kaine, Democrat of Virginia, and Rand Paul, Republican of Kentucky, have urged." I don;t think obama should still be allowed to conduct the war, but i understand that sometimes you have to do what you have to do.
We make our Comanche in chief the head of the military because there job is to serve the people. if we let one person stay in charge then they would become power hungry and we would get someone that is not in touch with the people. So saying that Obama should not be allowed violates the whole system that gives the people a say in what the government does. As for him conducting the war for a small amount of time after his term ends is just smart. The new president is going to have a lot of other things to do once he enters office. It will also take time for the new president to get up to speed based on the facts instead off what he has herd from the media. Just shoving him in that role could be a disaster if I'm mirage action is needed and are president just doesn't know enough to make a decision fast enough. Every minute could be the difference between life and death of Americans.old

It all comes down to the relevant race issues that are taking over the meaning of segregation. Ofcourse with the Eric Gardner case and the infamous Ferguson case, the only thing the minorites are worried about is dodging the minority spectrum, and showing just how hard life is for some. I can say that this article may have exagerrated with basically stated that you do whatever a cop says regardless of what they say, I believe that is upholding their "authority", and helping the cops keep the power they have.
http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2014/12/11/senate-committee-vote-military-force-islamic-state/20261159/ Its only fair to consider the military force in ISIL only because they have dedicated themselves to threatening the president as well as Americans. Although, it is pointless to examine the possibilities with the current congress because they will soon be leaving their seats come next month. I admire Obama for keeping his word on not allowing American troops over on ISIL soil, which says that he cares more about saving the lives of Americans rather than sacrificing their lives just to save himself and others. Although, its easy to understand why Congress is pushing for authorization because they have an idea to end this terrorists group for good. I just don't agree with sending our troops, I'm sure they could work there way around other plans.
In this article, the author is simply saying that racism isn't as bad as it was 50,100, or 400 years ago, but it hasn't progressed as much as people thought and hoped it would. He also explained that as youths, we all need to realize that it isn't going anywhere, and that we all need to stand up for ourselves, minority or not. There's always going to be problems across the country concerning race, and I agree that it's up to us and future generations to get a hold of people and make it at least a little better, and make people wake up ad realize we all have to get along, and that there are always going to be different people around us. Racism will never be solved. People have to learn to get along without getting in trouble or hurting someone
I completely agree with you Taylor. Racism has lasted through generations after generations and it will probably continue through for a long time. We can't change how people think, but we can change how we serve justice. there are too many people getting away with racism led murders. We have to set an example that racism has to end now.
http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/first-read/deadline-looming-government-funding-bill-passes-house-n266386 In this article it's stating the House passed a $1.1 trillion spending bill by 216-206. Now the senate has till 11:59 today to pass the bill to avoid parts of the government to shutdown. House Democrats already disused about the spending measures and how it had prompted a split between the White House and progressive Democrats because of a decrease of financial reforms. The White House also stated that even though administration objects the bill, the president supports the legislation and will not veto it. Many oppose the bill like the White House Minority Leader Neancy Pelosi because they state the bill will lose financial regulations and they're disappointed the White House is accepting its inclusion in the spending measure. I believe the believe the bill might help the government instead and will also stop from causing another government shutdown.
Rolling Stone the popular magazine published an article telling of a rape incident on the university of Virginia campus. The victim was Jackie a freshman in the university. The magazine recognized that there was mistakes in the article. The journalist of the article even failed to contact the victim. Over the past couple years there has been quite a lot rape and sexual assault allegations at many campuses around the country. Due to the Clery Act campuses are to publish crime to the proper authorities but campuses have been known to have their shortcomings in this range. Although campy sexual violence remains all too real there does happen to be false reports as well. With 2-8% of the reports being false.
It is awful that lazy journalism can happen with something as serious as a rape case. Although such a crime is becoming more common it is no less serious. It is good that rolling Stone revised the article but it is too little too late. As far as the false allegations go,i think it's always best to investigate. Better safe than sorry.
Just about each year around this time, students and workers and anarchists from all over Greece take over the Athens polytechnic to celebrate the 1973 student uprising. The students were protesting the Greek military agenda that ruled the nation from 1967-1974. To commemorate the uprising every year they protest. The protest ends in Exarchia a neighborhood made famous for being the birthplace of the anarchist movement in Greece. During the protests it tends to turn violent and leads to death for a few. The police will use tear gas, rubber bullets, flash bangs, and batons till the protests diminish.

This is due to all of the things that he has done in Arizona. He was stopping people who look like Hispanics and asked them for papers. In my opinion that's unconstitutional, but of course he'll say it's to make the country better. Although if Obama says this in trying to help families stay together and be able to work he think this is bad. I truly think he won't be able to do much and hopefully he won't. I think he need to realize that Hispanics aren't here cause damage but to get better lives and do better.

I thinks it's amazing we are trying to conserve the environment as well as to take care of national monuments. This is going to add many things to the national park service. Such as some of the places of the Underground Railroad in Maryland. I think it's great we are going to protect certain places because they are a piece of Americas past and they are also apart of Americas beauty. So this is nice. We are also going to add like 5 parks which is nice. When something is a national park it is protected are. So this means more parts of our environment will be protected causing it to be healthy. All in all I think this bill the Senate passed is awesome.
This article is about ISIS trying to sell an American body back to his family for one million dollars. In some cases, European captives have been released with ransom money. I'm not sure what the financial status of the family is but 1 million dollars is a lot. The whole idea is ruthless. If we buy American bodies back we bring solace to the families but also support ISIS financially.
