ISIS is in the news again... how should we deal with it?  Could the lame duck Congress make a difference?

  1. We were just talking about this a few days ago and the actions Obama will be taking towards the end of his presidency. Immigration is something he has been working on for awhile and now that the Republicans seem to be taking over he is throwing all of his cards down in the effort to get things done before he leaves. Leaving the next president a huge mess to try and clean up, if that is even possible.

This thing cracked me up. And is very useful and contributes to what we are learning about right now. Since Obama is on his way out and Republicans are on their way in Obama is trying to get everything in that he has put off in the next two years. One of his main things is immigration. Since Obama is so for immigration we all know he will try his hardest to let everyone who is already here, stay.

In this article the author talks about Congress' lame duck session and how they need to pass a bill to allow military action against ISIS directly before the year ends. Tim Kaine, a Democrat from Virginia has a bill that would expire after a year and allow ground forces to rescue American personnel or attack high-value targets wherever ISIS is, not limited to a specific location. President Obama thinks the campaign against ISIS would take years and he doesn't want to put any Americans on the ground, but I agree with the author in saying that these measure should be taken. Also, something I found weird was that the author kept referring to the president as "Mr. Obama," not "President Obama" like he can't call him president or something. It bothered me.

    1. i found the article interesting just how congress is being lame-duck towards this whole ISIS situation. the fact that the midterms have passed making the whole ISIS problem one of those center of attention problems. also considering that the house and the senate are occupied, they're expecting more of a straight forward declaration type approach to this. although you will see a lot of other former senators saying that they can see this being delayed up to next year. a whole year! that a very long time to wait. and a lot of money going to waste for something undeclared.

    2. Congress didn't have an intension to really do anything about ISIS. It was all just big talk to try to get themselves elexted again. The lame ducks don't want to anything because they are still a little sour about not getting elected again. In truth the reason that Isis has been aloud to become such a threat because public opinion is really divided on what we should do about it. However Isis will need to be carefull because if America really wanted them gone, they would be gone.

I find this article very interesting. The author, an African American women, was at work at Temple University in Philadelphia and she herd her colleague asking a student why they capitalized the B in Black, when referring to the nationality. The author says that this is the way it should be, black, is a color, and Black, is a nationality. There are actually still publishing industries such as the New York Times and the Associated Press that don't do this and yet they make statements of their policies saying, "nationalities, peoples, races, tribes," should be capitalized. The author's response is, "What are Black people, then?" I agree with the author, it's not like it's anything radical, it's just kind of common sense. It is amazing to me how much one little capitalized letter matters.

    1. Wow! Treston I glad you brought this up. I'm sure other groups get there names capitalized. One of the reasons why I think Black is not capitalized ( but not an excuse) is because Black is not politically correct anymore. When being referenced as a Black person or the community it should definitely be capitalized. African-American is. I don't believe White is capitalized either but Caucasian is. Great article man!

In this article, the author writes that the “purple” south that we read about in class a few weeks ago is going away. After the most recent elections, the south is almost completely dominated by the Republican party, and through the use of gerrymandering, the Republicans are increasing their strength even more in this region. This article reaffirms the racial tendencies of voters, saying that the vast majority of Democrat votes that have come from this region in the last few elections have come from Black voters. In fact, the author argues that if it weren’t for the African American population in Southern states, it is unlikely that there would be any Democratic representation in this region at all.

In this article, the author makes the argument that early childhood education is an issue with serious potential that could greatly influence the future of the United States. The author writes that this issue is one of the few that has sweeping bipartisan support. For example, he says that both President Obama and Speaker of the House John Boehner agree on this issue. When was the last time you heard that? I agree with the author on this subject because the data does not lie. It is no secret that the U.S. is slipping on international academic performance scores. The most critical period of time in a child’s development is the first five years of their life. Politically speaking, I have to imagine that if Congress was to come across the table and sponsor a bill regarding early childhood education, some of the negativity that the general public feels towards them could go away.

    1. I like how this article starts out. We pay zoo keepers and social workers the same amount of money. Despite the facts I do not think that are government will ever do anything to help because they really won't get any credit for it. By the time they turned 18 they would have forgotten what there government did for them. It's all about getting re elected. However if you help them get money for college they might remember you when they go out and vote

in other news obama has declared his plan on immagration. i personally think that what his plans are for this are in good intentions. although people are going to critic on his choice i think he sholdnt worry about it. this plan is going to change the lives of millions of immagrant families coming to the US for a better way of living, although they are being strict on the who gets to stay and such. i still think people will benefit. Obama plans on adding more enforcements to the border and sending felons back, and try to keep the families together.

    1. I think it is a wonderful thing that Obama is trying to keep families together. Having people be critics about his choices are irreverent. You wouldn't want to be forced to stay away from your family. I think that this is a great start to help America realize that sometimes, we have to think about how others would feel. I support Obama completely on this plan.

This article talks about how birth control can be dangerous, especially with some of the procedures being done in India. With having a friend who passed from getting a blood clot from birth-control, i take this seriously. If the world has realized that some of the birth-controls are killing women then why do they keep giving it to them? the article says "Faced with public outrage, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ordered an investigation into what caused the sickening and deaths of so many women this time. The victims’ families were immediately paid compensation." I believe that this investigation go by pretty quickly and help these families.

  9. The country of Egypt undergoes quite a horrible and oppressive act done to many women. They're mutilated at the rate of 91% of all women living in Egypt they've had their genitals mutilated to take away pleasures. UNICEF estimates that around 125 million women in 29 countries are mutilated each year. The opinion editor is one of the few fortunate women in Egypt to not have undergone the procedure. The UN and other countries have made treaties and whatnot declaring that genital mutilation of women is taking away a human right.

  10. On September 26th 43 students that were en route to Iguala were taken away by police but during this clash 6 people were killed. Investigators say that the police had acted at behest to the Iguala mayor and are feared that the 43 students were turned over to the Guerreros Unidos cartel. All 43 students are believed to be killed. But the family of the students pray they're okay. With this happening the police and the law have become scrutinized by the people over how they can just let someone of that power do such a thing. And there's marching and protesting to overturn the governemt as a whole.

    1. I agree with all the people protesting towards the government. What kind of people take 43 insistent students and just kill them. This action shows the government isn't doing a great job at protecting the people nor doing what's suppose to do. Also if the government was really involved in the killing of the 43 students, then something must be done because things can't just stay like this. Families shouldn't have to go through these kinds of situations. The government as a whole should try and improve situations for people not make things even worse!

  11. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/11/21/obama-signs-executive-action-delaying-deportations-for-millions-illegal/
In this article, It states that president Obama has signed two executive actions. His plan is to put the deportation of more than 11 million Hispanics on hold and give them the opportunity to work and stay in the U.S legally. Many people are disagreeing with his plan because they’re here illegally and why give them the opportunity when they don’t deserve it. I disagree with them because majority of the hispanic population is not here because they desire. They’re here because their country doesn’t provide the benefits they need to survive in a well economic. Also president Obama is only giving this opportunity to the one’s who don’t have criminal records so why worry about having people illegal criminals. Of course many people will still disagree with president Obama because those people haven’t been and will never be in an illegal Hispanics shoe. They’ll never see it from their point of view therefore never will understand why they’re so grateful president Obama wants to pass this act.

    1. I agree with you one hundred percent Yanira. Just because the immigrants are here illegally doesn't mean that they shouldn't be given equal opportunities. Most of them have already built a life here. And they came here to America looking for a better start. People shouldn't be concerned with them becoming legal because they haven't caused any trouble while they were here.

    2. I agree with you completely. I am very thankful that Obama has done this. Many people are out of the shadows. I like that you point out the act that the people who are disagreeing with it never have been in that position. I think this is a good point to make because it points out how they aren't putting themselves in the shoes of the millions of immigrants that come here for a better life. Another thing is they to take in consideration how many families will get see separated without something like this. They only look at it as them being intruders. But that's not at all what they want to do they only want to some to have a better life. If they think that they are going to have "criminals" here they can't say that because criminal records will be checks. So I agree with you I am thankful for this and I hope God helps all illegals to be able to get out of the shadows.

President Obama is making huge changes to the United States once again. On Thursday he addressed the nation on his new immigration reform plan. His plan will allow five million illegal immigrants to legally become United States' citizens. Some people oppose this plan, but it will help a lot of people finally get their lives together.

    1. While I agree that this plan will help these immigrants I do not think it is a good idea. Sometimes you need to look out for number one. Yourself. As I addressed in my second blog these people will also be eligible for government programs like health care and social security if the get citizenship! Not to mention they will be flooding the job market and taking work about from hard working Americans who actually have the right to be here.

    Mr. Obama's wise immigration plan
while I do not agree with Obama's view on how to handle immigration as I addressed last week. I so applaud him for actually stepping up and trying to do something about the very controversial issue. I do think that giving this many immigrants opportunities for citizenship and work permits will flood the job market. Giving them citizenship also allows them to apply for government aid and health care and guess who gets to pay for that... you guess it! You and me!

Thank God that president Obama is going to help millions of illegal immigrants. I believe they deserve that have earned the right to stay here. Mall of then came seeking the American dream of having good life for themselves and their children. America being the land of opportunity I believe that they should be given the opportunity to be able to be here without worrying about getting deported. Obama set the requirement to be that they need to have U.S child and they need to have been here for five years. This I believe is pretty fair. Many families were being separated. I agree with Obama saying America isn't about separating families but rather uniting them. So now those people can be here calmly and they won't be separated. Although the next president can take away that with his signature. But I pray he won't. It just wouldn't be fair to those people who can now be okay to then go and be worried again. But only God know what will happen. In the meantime I'm happy to say many people can come out of the shadows.
