Suggestion: Find an article about a close senatorial race- about 1/3 of the chamber is up for reelection and if the Democrats lose the majority it would have major effects on Obama's effectiveness in moving legislation through during the next 2 years of his tenure.

ReplyDeleteI know this may not be exactly what you asked for in this weeks blogs but this kind of struck something in me while reading it. Were we not just talking about this last week? When we did presentations power was given to the states to legalize medical marijuana. And now here we see it again with the states wanting to just legalize it period for people over the age of 18. I wonder if the National government is going to battle this or not.
i find it quite interesting on how this will turn out. i'ver never been found of the drug, yet drugs stronger than marijuana(that have killed people) has killed people. i honestly think at least 1 out of the 3 will go through with it. taxing the drug will build more funds money. and, even though this doesnt really go with goverment, will decrease in gang drugs, and violence in a way. 21 and over would be able to obtain this drug legally. if passed, it will be used not only for medical, but for recreational. but yes. quite interesting on how this is going to turn out.

ReplyDeleteObama has had a very controversial effect on America after his election. He created a lot of new projects including Obamacare and a lot of people have taken a interest to it. But with upcoming elections for so many different people will Obamas ideas have any say or will they even stand once he is gone? With the Senate elections coming up I believe they will have to pick a side. Whether they will stand with Obama or against him. This may have a great impact on Obama and how people are going to view him. Along with the possible outcome of the election. If a participant in the election agrees with Obama then Obama will clearly stand by them which may sway the election dramatically.
After Obama's election he promised many things, about coming out of wars, and about health care especially. Many people disagree with the thought of Obamacare, purely because it raises taxes for thos that work to then pay for the health care of those that do not work. This made a large number of people angry, and even turned some against Obama completely, although all he was trying to do was create a way for each individual to be allowed the same health care in a sense to create more equality. With Obama's decisions comes people that disagree, and agree either way as with the decision of any president to make any decision, and I agree that Obama will stand with those that agree with him, and the election could definitely sway in his favor if he stands with the right group of people.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.dukechronicle.com/articles/2014/10/07/foreign-policy-rift-emerges-hagan-tillis-senate-race
ReplyDeleteIn this article, the author writes that the senatorial race in North Carolina is partly surrounding a very unconventional issue for senatorial campaigns. That issue is foreign policy. The Republican candidate in North Carolina has repeatedly slammed the democratic candidate for not pushing for a stop to ISIS while in office. I find this fascinating because foreign policy is typically an issue that affects presidential campaigns, not campaigns for the House or Senate. This just shows how concerned the American public is with foreign issues.

ReplyDeleteIn this article, the author writes that the Chinese government has put Ilham Tohti, an outspoken member of one of China’s minorities, behind bars for life, arguing that he is a Separatist. This stems from the man’s peaceful criticisms of China’s oppressive government. With this sentence, the Chinese government continues to show its nature of injustice towards many of its people. Many people across the world were appalled by the news. China even got calls from President Obama and other European leaders demanding Tohti’s release. This article underlines one of the many differences in ideologies between western culture and that of China and other parts of Asia.

ReplyDeletei think that obama will eventually send ground troops. although he says he wont, the article shows similaritites of him and president lyndon johnson. they both have the same strategys to approach this situation. but obama has alittle more to worry about. i mean the ISIS group is targeting the US, while during vietnam, the US just wanted to get involved. although it is tough to say, i think will resist sending troop to a certain extent.
I agree with Michael. There is no way the ISIS group can be dipanded just by air strikes. We also have to take in the consideration of the safety of civilians. We brought this situation on ourselves by setting up an unstable government and forcing our philosophies on the middle east. These ideas might not mix well with their values/ cultures.

ReplyDeleteIn this article, Cindy King votes yes to being allowed to install a camera into her mothers nursing home because she thinks abuse could be tkaing placel. This is a large subject and many cases have been tried but since there are no other witnesses, most of the cases get dismissed. However this is a violation of both the patient, and the nurses. It's the same concept as a nanny cam, how would you like it if the moment where you have no idea how to control this screaming child is being recorded and watched over and over again determining whether or not you handles the situation correctly? Obviously abuse is never okay, but people do make mistakes. As for the patient all of their "private time" would then be shared with their closest family members. If my mom video taped me while watching TV it would probably creep me out a little bit, and yes some of the patients suffer from diseases that cause them to not remember times, but I don't feel that this is the correct way to go about the issue of abuse.

ReplyDeleteThis was and article/ video on how health officials think Ebola could be the new AIDS. The ebola outbreak is definetly something that has effected many people, especially in Africa. I dont know how we can contain this epidemic but it would be comforting to know what our leaders would like to do to resolve this. What do you guys think? Are we givin enough insight on this situation?
I would agree with you, It would be comforting for our leaders to tell us how they're going to resolve the problem, but I really don't think there is much that our leaders could do to completely resolve the problem that they aren't already doing, or going to do. Also, I think people may know parts of the Ebola epidemic, but I think there are some assumptions and exaggerations in the public about the whole thing.
DeleteThis is going to turn into an outbreak because not all countries have the medical knowledge necessary to treat this. I honestly think that we should close are borders. If this becomes wide spread a lot of people are going to die. Will should also suspend immigration to avoid new contacts from arising. We as americans need to take extreme measures to ensure that America is still a safe place for the people here.

ReplyDeleteSenator Kay Hagan a democrat from North Carolina missed a classified hearing about a threat from ISIS to go to a fundraiser in New York to raise money for her reelection. She has also acknowledged skipping a number of different hearings. According to her opponent republican Thom Tillis, she is neglecting to do her job. What's really unfortunate is that many people probably don't know this is going on and will vote for her anyway. This kind of ties in to what we did in class today about people not knowing or caring to know what's going on politically.
In 1997 Oregon created the death with dignity act, allowing citizens to obtain life ending prescriptions from a physician. You have to be a mentally healthy 18+ Oregon citizen. Some doctors however find this morally corrupt. Saying that it goes against their reasons for being a doctor and whatnot. Ultimately I completely agree with Oregon and I even believe that if you want to end your life on your own terms you should be able to do it as soon as possible.
ReplyDeletehttp://mobile.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2014/10/06/expanding-the-right-to-die
I think that if you want to end your life that is up to you. Assisted or non assisted. At the end of the day suicide is still suicide. I don't believe there is any law or rule that can make this matter morally acceptable.
DeleteI think that it is your life not anyone elses. You should be able decide if you want to live or die. But I think you should also know of the consequences of this action. The people and lives you'll effect all around you. I think that that should be asked to people who want suicide help. And then after that.. it's up to them.
DeleteIf you want to end your own life theres nothing stoping you ,but the state shouldn't get involved. If you want to end your life just do it. It's not extremely difficult. When states get involved in life or death there getting into an area of are lives were the government should stay out. This is how it starts ,but what should really scare you is what it could turn into. The requirements will just keep getting lower and lower and eventually any one who had a bad day will be able to kill them selves. If you want to kill yourself do the state shouldn't try to stop you ,but the state shouldn't get involved with assisted suicide.
DeleteI agree with Andrew; if you want to end your own life go ahead and do it. But do it by yourself, it isn't the state's responsibility to get involved. If you want to die that's your choice, but do not seek the help of others to do your dirty work for you. I do believe suicide is wrong in total, but we can't stop people from doing so.
DeleteWhen the fight against Ebola has taken over central Africa this homeless shelter turns into a treatment center against the virus. It also provides training for volunteers to fight against the outbreak so it won't take anymore lives. The outbreak is so bad that there's quarintine camps, where people go to see if their symptoms worsen or not. If they do they stay if they don't change they leave the next day. If they go away they leave too. But most end up dying. However though the few that survive the Ebola are said to be immune to the entire virus itself and they are looking for a cure from this.

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/10/opinion/mexicos-deadly-narco-politics.html?ref=opinion&_r=0
ReplyDeleteThis article is very biased, although gives off the real life issues of how "narco politics" are taking over this country. It is very dissapointing to know that city officials, even the mayor has turned their backs on the people they should protect. Although, It isn't completely fair to say Mexico's state government is being controlled by gangster politicans, because as this editor said the President has begun so many reforms for his country. This mass murder was terrible, but I think a lot of people are looking at one problem, as the whole problem. Just because one state decided to betray their government, doesn't mean the federal government should be to blame, especially since the Mayor is a representative most people would confide in. I see a terrible beginning for these "narco-politics", but I also see them getting stopped before they can make it that far.
Will Syria be Obama's Vietnam?
ReplyDeletehttp://mobile.nytimes.com/2014/10/08/opinion/will-syria-be-obamas-vietnam.html?_r=0
this article was about how people think that Obama will commit to ground troops in Syria. I think that it would be ridiculious to do that. I do not agree with the reasons that we interfere with the Syrians. If there has ever been a time to just let it go it is now.

ReplyDeleteThe Russian 'president' Putin hhas caused a economic downturn since he returned to office. The amount of oil in Russia has decreased and it's one of there most valuable items. I think he should be removed from office soon. If what this article says is true then Russia will fall into economic and social anarchy. This could in turn hurt everyone else who buys oil from Russia.

ReplyDeleteI think the Ebola panic is actually growing. A patient was sent home from the hospital and know he has Ebola. How many people did he infect while he was out in the city. A friend lives in Dallas and he actually lives a few blocks away from an Ebola patient. He said he just stays in the house most of the time now.
