In this article, the author writes that there have been recent rumors that Mitt Romney would run for the Republican Presidential nomination for the election of 2016. The author goes on to write that this would be a bad idea for the Republican party. I agree with the author, because I would find it incredibly hard to believe he could win the overall election. Once the public got past the name recognition, there is not a much that he has to offer that he didn’t already display in 2012. Since he would not be facing President Obama again, it is probably best for him and the Republican party that he stays off the presidential campaign trail

    1. i agree with Josh that it would be a bad idea for Romney to run in the 2016 election. I think that it would just get a lot of peoples hopes up for a Republican side of things but I just do not think it is going to happen. Every election is a big deal that hundreds of people work and spend millions of dollars on. He already tried to win in the 2012 election and I just do not think he should do it again.

    2. I also agree. I think it would hurt his reputation if he ran, regardless of the outcome. If he ran again and won, it would look like he only can accomplish things the second time around, and if he lost, it would be very embarrassing losing twice. I thought it was embarrassing in itself last election when he lost and he didn't even believe it, it took him so long to finally come out and make is concession speech.

    3. If he's trying to run again the Republican Party wouldn't support him? That's a bad idea. If he does run I think that would be his third time running for president. I think the Republicans are going to nominate someone a little more liberal to gain leverage on Clinton.

In this article, the author writes that democrats have “won the culture war” concerning issues such as same-sex marriage and abortion. Coming up on midterm elections, many conservative politicians have backed off of their stances on these issues, and many liberals have attacked the ones who have held their ground. While I certainly recognize that this trend is occurring, I do not think it should be treated as a big surprise. As younger generations reach the voting age, they tend to vote more liberal, forcing politicians to either adopt these views, or back off of their own.

I am actually very surprised Senate candidates are bring up such a hot issue as abortion. Republicans in many ways could win this "cultural war", single mothers with no help from anybody would feel sickened by abortion rights because it reaches a personal level, bringing in the extra votes for the Republican. Although, the Democrats could take some heat for going against this and saying that abortion is OK. It depends on the person you're talking to. If a business man at the age of 25, fresh out of college is asked whether he agrees with the Democratic opinion or Republican, he may very well agree with the Democrats. Although, vice-versa, ask a mother of five, and she may slap you in the face. In my opinion I would go with the Republican argument, except for the extent of even banning certain birth control. Even Republicans don't feel that is as necessary.

    1. This arguement between whether or not abortion should be allowed will always be a debate, no matter what laws, have been, or will be passed there will always be factions of people that agree and disagree. Each person takes the thought of this to heart in a different manner, personally I feel that abortion shoukld be a choice in certain circumstances. For example if a woman has been raped, that should definitely be up to her, because that baby will forever remind her of something that ruined her. Another example would be incest, because that is for the safety of the child, many things genetically can go wrong if you have a child with your brother, or even cousin. With that being said, I do not feel that a teen should be allowed the option because as a teen you know that sex could lead to children. Along with having sex comes the responsibility to, if needed, grow up and take charge of your actions.

I see a close ending to the ISIS. Although, there was a rough start, the terrorist group is now understanding what Obama has in for them. As Obama stated he overestimated their ability to go through with what they said, bringing in comfort and relief to this all. As long as Obama keeps this up, all of the air missiles, and attacks on their oil foundation, the ISIL could throw in the towel. Although, it isn't fair to say James Clapper under estimated the ISIS group because Obama probably did too, in account that he finally only addressed the issue because of the beheadings of the journalist, at least that's what most people agree on.

    1. I'd like to see how this progresses more until I make an opinion. However, as of right now, I'm not sure that a couple of air strikes are going to stop ISIS. This is the group that mercilessly beheaded two American journalists. This is an extremist group, and I cannot see them stopping so soon.

    2. I agree with Kathleen, The terrorist groups are finally realizing that we are not joking around in this situation. Even though this group beheaded two of our journalist, I believe that everything we are doing is a bigger threat to ISIS then they realize. I think we should not have taken our American troops out of this territory the first time. By sending our troops back over there we are spending even more money.

  5. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/30/opinion/why-drivers-get-away-with-murder.html?ref=opinion&_r=0

I didn't know that so many people died from drivers not paying attention. Also the fact that so little people are charged for this crime. You are taking someone's life and even that 9 year old deserves some justice and he was killed by a taxi driving who didn't yield! This concerns me in the fact that the federal government is not stepping in to deal and address this issue and I wonder how far things will have to go for the government to step in and say that this is a problem.

    1. i agree with this. i find it crazy to think that i could kill someone with my own car in New York City, and walk away with just a fine! the rule of two is silly, and quite frankly, stupid. the necessity of having to have two wrongdoings in order to be charged. thankfully one of the many vision zero laws were passed. including the cooper law, that helped stop this kind of madness. but i really do find it crazy to think that everyone was aware of this. peopled getting killed, witnesses, even videos! yet someone could get away with it.

      Delete
    2. I think that it is terrible that some many things happen behind the wheel of a car over something like a text or a phone call or even changing a radio. I think people should be charged if they hit someone because they weren't paying attention to the road. Millions of people have died in car crashes and a lot of those could have been avoided if the driver would have had full attention on the road. And it doesn't matter if it's a new driver to a police officer who has done nothing but good for the police force of you hit someone because of a text or anything then you should be charged for it. That amount of people who get away with it is outrageous because you could have of you didn't already take that person you hits life away from them because of something that took your eyes off the road. So if you're going to drive don't let anything distract you and if you do you need to be held accountable for your own actions.

The U.S. is putting billions of dollars into to the reconstruction of Afghanistan. By the end of the year, Congress will have used more money on Afghanistan than it did rebuilding 16 European nations after WWII under the Marshall Plan and $104 billion has been mismanaged and stolen. Afghanistan keeps requesting money every time they get into some financial trouble and I don't think that we should be responsible for it, I think NATO should be doing more, although they are helping a little bit. I agree with the author in saying that the American agencies tasked with spending money need to do a better job identifying priorities.

    1. I completely agree. I think it's ridiculous that they call us every time they get themselves into trouble. Especially if we are also in debt too. Priorities shouldn't be on Afghanistan. It's always good to help, but I agree that our priorities should be elsewhere. And I also agree with Treston and how NATO should be doing more to help than they currently are

    2. Why should the U.S. be paying for Afghanistan. We have are having financial problems and home and they are asking for money. There not even using all the money. They have 16 billion in unspent money just siting around yet they keep asking for more. We need to cut them off. If we don't they will end up like the states and we will never get out. America is too involved the the middle east and cutting funding would be the first step to getting out.

so what i understood is that obama is promising to prevent civilian casualties from these drone attacks. hes kept his word somewhat on that. the only situation is that basically if some people do happen to die during the situation. its not the U.S. fault. i may be wrong on this but that what i understood from it. but they will "try" to protect from killing Syrian, and Iraqi civilians during the drone air strikes.

    1. I think the problem with this reasoning is that it allows for what it's essentially the murder of innocent people and classifies it as an acceptable loss. Do the ends justify the means? But on the other hand desperate times call for desperate measures. There is no true or easily recognizable right in this situation.

Ebola being spread throughout the US is a very dissappointing thing seeing as in Africa there were 3,000 deaths, however our medical system is much better than in Africa. Many poeple have decent health insurance, and along with Obama Care, we all have the resources to stay healthy. This doesn't mean that Ebola is not an issue, because people could certainly mistake it with a simple flu, but now that we are hearing more about the symptoms, people are more aware making it not a huge issue.

    1. I agree Mikhayla. While I think it is sad that so many people have died from this virus I think it is important to remember that most of those deaths were in 3rd world countries. They do not have the health care system that we have in the United States and I think that a nation that is as far advanced in the medical field as we are will have no problem handling the epidemic.

    2. I agree as well! Ebola isn't spread through air coughs and sneezes like some diseases. It's harder to spread. Africa is a very different place and I think that the United States can handle the virus efficiently. It's very sad that many people are dying but I feel as if this won't spread through the entire World like som people think.

    3. Ebola was a big problem in Africa for years; thousands of people died. I do not think it should be taken lightly. Even though it's harder to spread, we have to remember that if it does there is no cure. I still believe that we have the resources to stop the spread of Ebola.

  9. In France a forest is about to be destroyed and the French Eco activists have tried peaceful protests to get the police/government to stop destroying this forest. Quite odd as the police had made it turn from peaceful to a miniature war. The Eco activists are tying themselves to trees, living in them and trying hard to keep them. But in the end it turns into a altercation with rocks, bombs, tear gas and fire.

  10. Students of Princeton university are calling on the university's administration to stop the receiving of criminal information from the state. At NYU (New York University) they are leading a campaign of incarceration to education coalition. Pretty much they're saying that past involvement with the judicial system shouldn't affect a person aiming to receive a higher education.

I think that it is great that we are trying so hard pick up Afghanistan but if we keep giving them money that gets stolen we might as well be throwing that money away. Hopefully this new president of Afghanistan will pick up and end corruption and backroom deals and pick up Afghanistan and put them back on their feet and running again. But stronger than ever before. I think one of the first steps the new president should take is "plan" backroom deals and arrest these criminals that show up to try and fight back just a little bit. But we should keep giving them money as long as he doesn't appear to be going corrupted.

    1. I agree with you. I think we should assist them to help them rebuild their country. Although i think we should make sure that the money gets uses for good purposes and not wasted. If not like you said we may as well be throughing it away. I think that if the new new president does mage the money well then it will be in good hand and in no time Afganistan will be back on it feet.

    Paying Afghanistan's Bills
This article made me sick. The amount of money we are just pouring into the middle east is just absolutely ridiculious. I feel very strongly that it is a waste of money and no matter how much time, money, and effort you spend, the middle east will always be a place ruled by violent dictators.

    The Fundamental Horror of ISIS
ISIS is a very threatening group and it feels as if the United States and maybe even all other countries fear this group. The article says "Before the Islamic State there was Rwanda, and the Lord’s Resistance Army and the killing fields of Cambodia, and before that, in Europe, the Holocaust." The fact that the author compares ISIS to these groups/ events is very scary and I fear what's going to happen in the future. I'm glad Obama took action but I dont think the air strikes are going to fix the situation.

With the outbreak of Ebola, many volunteers have to step up to help these "infected" countries. Most of these volunteers are Christian missionaries. Brian Palmer believes that this is somehow "wrong". Maybe he feels threatened that these Ebola patients will be "infected" with Christianity. This could be partial to his belief that there should be a "separation between religion and medicine".

  15. http://mobile.nytimes.com/2014/10/02/opinion/living-with-the-terror-of-ebola.html this article addresses that Ebola is now effecting life in America, and that things aren't going to get better. It seems extremely weird that nobody's freaking out about it, even though it's only in Texas for now. People all over the place are checking for elevated temperatures, and although there were measures taken, it doesn't seem to me like it was unpreventable to keep it out of the unites states. Although it is or was all over Nigeria and Africa, it was somewhat contained. Now that the first case has been confirmed in Texas, it seems to me like the measures taken weren't carried out as they should have been

Things might be looking up when it comes to treating Ebola. This article talks about potentially using the blood of people who have been sickened by the Ebola virus but have since recovered to help treat others who're infected. People who survived have antibodies in their blood that can help fight the drugs. It might not even work, but it's progress.

This article talks about Governor browns (of California) Veto. I personally do not think that this bill should have been vetoed. This bill was made to strengthen the legal rights of franchisee. This would have helped a lot of low-waged workers. The article says "At a hearing last June, a McDonald’s franchisee who supported the bill told legislators that corporate overseers had told her that she was paying employees “too much,” and that she could make more money — for herself and the corporation — by paying them less." I think that this is wrong , I believe people should be paid based on the work they do.

Social classes do effect who we talk to. We all want to say that a rich and a poor person can get along ,but it highly unlikely. In a study they found that people from different classes tend to spend less time with each other than friends in the same social class. It must be easier because they have similar values and you agree on more things. Social classes still effect who we talk to and are a promenade part of society today.

This article talks about the new ISIS video beheading a British hostage Alan Henning. I think that that is a monstrous act ISIS is doing. In the article it speaks that the cause of the beheading is that the British announced that they are going to help America fight against ISIS. I think that the British are doing good in helping us against them so we can stop them. Although i think that ISIS did this to put in more fear into people and to show that they are going to do very vicious acts against us.This is the fourth time ISIS has beheaded a person and uploaded a video. The other people are Jim Foley, Steven Sotloff and David Haines. I think its good that they are doing a lot to bring the people who committed these crimes to justice. These crimes are terrible acts. I think its good that the U.S are doing air stikes in order to stop ISIS.

The author doesn't think that the US should end sanctions against Russia just yet. Russia has pretty much ceased action in the Ukraine but I would agree that it is important to get Russia completely back to where they belong. Borders need to be firmly established and maintained so Russia doesn't try to overstep it's authority.
