Pretty big. I'm pretty on the fence as far as my opinion on this goes. It's true that colleges and unis shouldn't make decisions on who they admit based upon race/sex/anything like that, it should be based off of grades and whatever (I don't know what normal colleges take into account, sorry), but unfortunately in the real world it often does boil down to race, and discrimination is still very real. It will be interesting to see whether or not other states follow this. Also, am I really first? Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?

    1. I am pretty torn on this as well. Yes your grades and achievements should be considered when going to a certain college, but why does race and discrimination even matter in today's society?! We live in such a diverse country that we should all be treated equally anyway. I'm not sure if other states will follow this or not, but as you said I guess we shall see!

    2. I agree with amanda and kaitlynn on this. Todays society is so diverse and there is so much going on I don't see why race or gender goes into account when looking into college applications. College students should get chosen based on ACT or SAT scores, and grade point averages. Not something crazy like race or gender.

    3. I agree with all 3 of you. Grades should be a reason but not ur race or gender. You're intelligence and skills should be why, not the color of of skin or physical features. We should all be equally treated. This world is so discriminating its gross

    4. Discrimination is not just color anymore. It is anything and everything that makes people different from others. If a certain college or university does not like a certain quality, they often times turn them down for other, unreasonable reasons. It should not be allowed, but unfortunately it is.

    5. I agree with Emily. Discrimination is competently just wrong. No matter what, someone should be able to get their education. Everyone should be created equally and be allowed to get their educaiton.

    6. One way or another discrimination will always be there. It's harsh that we have to see it so much and our society nowadays especially when all you're trying to do is get an education. I think it's going to be a problem really for the rest of life here on earth, but when we do get rid of this whatever we have I think the world would definitely be a better place. For something like this to happen it's huge and the government should realize that there should be more antidiscrimination laws of all kinds race, sex, etc.

    7. Its true that discrimination is just a harsh reality that we have to unfortunately accept is going to be there. However, I do feel that it plays significantly smaller role in the factor of college enrollment. I think that affirmative action was helpful at one point, but it has become outdated. I think the best way to rid discrimination for good is to completely remove it from our minds in the first place, I believe that this ruling to uphold the ban is a positive step for our country.

    8. I agree that the primary thing to consider when getting into a college should be grades. However, in order to maintain a diverse cross section of students there sometimes has to be some form of affirmative action. I would hope that one day this would not be needed, but we still have discrimination in this country and we need to continue to fight against that. I am not saying that someone who is not capable of doing college level work should be let in just on race alone, but it should be considered along with other factors.

    9. I agree with Amanda i dont thhink that race should go into account. On college applications they ask you for your race but it also has an "optional choice" right under it. So i dont think that its required that you put your race . Todays society is very very diverse and it shouldnt even be a question about what your race is.

    10. im happy this has become a thing and hope to see many states start adopting this.i think this will be great for people getting accepted due to how hard someone has worked and not based on something you can't control like ethnicity. this might get some big backlash though, for now we just sit and wait.

    11. I don’t think some schools choose another race over the other because they are racist; many do it because they want their schools to have a minority population so their school doesn’t seem racist. Ultimately colleges are being “racist” to not seem “racist”. I agree that it is not fair, people should be accepted in schools because they are qualified not because they are a certain race.

      Delete
    12. Well there are probably colleges and uni's that may put into account the race and/or gender or a certain person but that is not all they look at. They will also look at that persons accomplishments and grades. No matter what grades will always be something that will be looked at. I do believe it really isn't fair that race and/or whatever else they look at is a big part in the acceptance of a student.

      Delete
    13. I don't think that all of this discrimination is bad. Depending on the situation it is, but when they are just trying to maintain a certain amount of minorities in the college to main a diversity, I think it is absolutely fine. They have the right to select whoever they want into their colleges. Though, there is a very fine line between right and wrong when it comes to discrimination.

    14. I hate affirmative action! It gives people of less aptitude jobs, and opportunities that people that would do those jobs better or had better grades and accolades than the student, or employee. People that deserve the job or spot at a university, should get that spot or job instead of a person that is not as qualified simple as that I know that discrimination is real, and can still be a serious issue, but I do not think that others should be hindered because of this implication of reverse-racism it is just as unfair as true racism.

      Delete
    15. Either way you think about it, someone is the loser when it comes to affirmative action. You either get well qualified people who are part of a demographic majority and they're passed up foe someone less qualified, because the business or college wants to better represent it's minorities, or those who are part of the demographic minority and are better qualified are passed over, just because they're not part of the majority, resulting in the less qualified getting accepted.

  2. http://money.cnn.com/2014/04/23/smallbusiness/minimum-wage-exemptions/
This article discusses the changes coming to minimum wage. The current minimum wage is expected to increase to $10.10. There will also be a pay increase for disabled, teenage, and tipped workers. There are many workers also not protected by minimum wage. This includes agricultural employees, home care aides, delivery people, and even babysitters. I think that everyone should have the opportunity to earn as much money as possible. I feel it is unfair for some employees to be payed more than others, but I also think it depends on the job.

    1. I believe that some jobs should make more than others based on the difficulty of the work. However, at the same time i do think minimum wage should be raised as long as the price of the common items don't also increase. I did not know that some workers were not protected by minimum wage yet i think that this should be changed.

      Delete
    2. Should the minimum wage increase, I expect to see some inflation, unless everyone else's wage increases. I don't see this to be a helpful thing. I don't think it will be very beneficial for the economy. I mean, I think, sure, it'd be nice to see people with more money, but it doesn't mean that much will change. There just might be more money circulating, which is a good thing, but I don't think it will be enough to have a serious effect. And didn't they propose something similar to this? Weren't they supposed to raise the minimum wage to $9.00?

      Delete
    3. I think that the minimum wage should increase. I also think it depends on the job though, like waiters should get paid more, maybe fast food workers too. I also think they should be protected as well. I think that all minimum wages should be the same, its unfair that some people get 8 dollars while some only get 7.85

      Delete
    4. I think minimum wage should stay the same only because if it would go up, it would make everything else go up. Our daily living would cost so much that it wouldn't even be worth having minimum wage go up.

      Delete
    5. This is like trying to defeat the inevitable I am agreeing with as Bryce said if wages go up you're going to see inflation. apartments are going Up will go mortgage is going to go up everything will go up in price just like the wages, because then everything would be pointless to stay the same price if a minimum-wage job you can afford that stuff no problem then they're losing money. The fairest way is how it is right now if you want to make more money you got to work hard for it otherwise you're just being lazy and waiting for some miracle to happen although It won't.

      Delete
    6. Increasing minimum wage is a bad idea. It may have short term benefits, but the ling term consequences will be way higher. For one, minimum wage jobs are just that, minimum wage, they are designed to help people get some occupational experience to better themselves for higher ranking jobs, they are not designed to be long term jobs. Second, it will cost companies more to keep the same number of employees so they will start reducing staff and raise their pricing just to stay functional. Lastly, it will make the overall cost of living higher and make it harder on people who's wages won't increase because they are not on minimum wage and their bills will increase. This would just put the country in a worse place economically than it already is.

      Delete
    7. I sort of agree with John. We need to look at the long term effects that raising minimum wage would create. It could drive companies to reduce the number of employees to keep the company payroll down. We saw that kind of unintended consequence with the Obamacare act. Companies cut the hours of part time employees to make sure that they did not have to pay for medical benefits and to keep payroll costs down. Maybe we should more closely tie the wage to the rate of inflation so that anyone working for the minimum would not be losing ground, but at least staying even.

    8. i think that minimum wage should increse. 7.85 is not enough for anyone to survive on. I think that if it was raised to 10.10 then more people woiuldnt live in overty. but there is also a negative because if employers have to pay their employees more then they may not hire as many peopl. I know when i work that i would love to make 10.10 an hour. Are they going to raise how much servers make? I think they should because 3.85 and hour sucks. i wouldnt mind 7.85 an hour plus tips.

      Delete
    9. Minimum wage does need to go up but not to 10.10 because that means a lot of things will go up to. I do think that servers and delivery guys are screwed out of a good paycheck and therefor their minimum wage should go up. It might not be fair to non-tipped employees but how much tips does the average waiter make? Not a lot.

      Delete
    10. Minimum wage is pretty low and really not livable off of. Increasing it can help but also there is a major outcome if we do raise it. If minimum wage is increased so will many other things that will increase. Certain jobs should get paid more but to raise everyones pay really doesn't seem like a smart idea.

      Delete
    11. I think that there shouldn't be a rise in minimum wage, because if you increase minimum wage then everything else with also go up because of the increase in wages the employers have to pay to their employees. This doesn't fix the economy or anything at all. It will balloon peoples wages for a time, but no long term effects.

      Delete
    12. Honestly, regardless of inflation, the minimum wage should increase. Many studies have been done and the results have been the same. Someone who is living off of one minimum wage job, on their own and paying for every single expense with that job, doesn't have enough money to survive. They either need to room with others or have multiple jobs. An extra $3 an hour doesn't seem like much to some people, but that's an extra $24 for 8 hours of work, and an extra $120 from a 5-day work week.

Did the NYPD forget the kinds of photos that are typically taken with police officers? I mean, seriously, who would expect anything but horrendous brutality out of the NYPD? I can't fathom what kinds of attention they were hoping to gather, but this backfired so sadly. Hopefully they'll learn a lesson or something from this. I mean, I think anyone can learn a lesson from this, honestly. Forewarning to anyone who wants to check this out, some of the images are pretty brutal (the image in the actual tag on Twitter, not this article).

    1. i mean, i can see where they were going trying to make it seem like a nice thing and police being seen as good helpful people. they must not have taken into consideration their police force isn't the best to be getting attention with pictures. this may help crack down on this police brutality with all these disturbing pictures and may help make a change,

    2. Im sorry but this is hilarious to me, I mean yes they had a good idea in mind but they practically asked for this to happen. They are known for this kind of stuff that portrayed was in the pictured that were posted. they should have at least realized that they weren't only going to get good responses to their request. I agree that hopefully this will help change the police brutality in the State of New York along with other places.

Obama is trying to prepare more sanctions against Russia that would require other nations to join in on the sanctions. My worry is that this can push Russia further into a state where their back is up against the wall. Once Russia's back is up against the wall one of two possible things could happen. The one I hope happens is that Russia will work nagotiations with Ukraine and fix those problems peacefully. The one that worries me is that these sanctions will cause them to lash out and cause a war like Japan did in WW2 after we placed sanctions on them.

Michigan has been granted the ability to not use affermative action anymore for higher educational programs. It was passed in the courts 6-2 with one justice deciding to sit out. I agree with the decision to remove affermative action because people who are suited for that position should be allowed to compete for that position no matter their race or gender. If an asian or black person for example is suited for the position should be allowed to enter but if they are suited but get in anyway for being of a certain race or gender. They are taking away positions for other people who are suited for that position no matter the race or gender.

    1. I am also pro-affirmative action. I beleive that if there is a postition dealing with something important like the education of the future kids, that position should go to the person who is best fitted for that spot. I feel that if someone just gets put into that spot based on their race, and not of their actual ability, then that seems like it is taking a perfect occupation from the person that was best suited for it.

      Delete
    2. I feel that there should not be the "reverse discrimination" that has come from affirmative action in the past. However whether we want to admit or believe it, race is still a factor in decisions made by companies and colleges. No its not nearly as much of a factor as it was 50 years ago but it is still there underlying. We as a society need to grow to the point where race, gender. nor sexual orientation play a part in any decision or opportunity.

  6. The Safe Carry Protection Act of 2014 has been passed in Georgia. This act says that people in Georgia can have guns and basically take them anywhere (bars, churches, school zones, government buildings, etc.) I am alright with the 2nd amendment, but as long as the owner is safe with that weapon. I can see why this act was signed off, but having it to where Georgians all around the state, can have a gun in places in church and schools is way too unsafe and should not be needed in places like this. These places should be peaceful and safe places to be at. The guns contradicts that in a way.

    1. I agree as well. I believe there should still be some limitations as to where people can carry guns. Pertaining to schools and churches, I think you should have to be a law enforcement personnel. All of the other places are okay and seen as possibilities of danger. When we think of schools and churches, we think of safety. I think that is the way it should stay with guns being away from schools.

    2. Georgia's all like "GUNS EVERYWHERE!" and I really don't like it. I think that obviously the 2nd amendment should be upheld to a certain degree, but it's so easy for someone to want to get gung-ho about guns when they haven't lost someone as a result of a lack of gun control. I really think this is the wrong direction for the good ole US of A.

  7. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/vermont-to-become-1st-state-with-gmo-labeling/

It has been and still will continue to be a long hard fought battle. Vermont has become the first state to require companies to label GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) which was what was trying to be avoided in the Monsanto Bill. However, people are complaining that the prices will go up for food. They are also saying that it is a federal issue and should not be dealt with on a state-by-state basis. But you got to start somewhere, right? More power to you, Vermont!

    ReplyDelete
  8. I think this is a really good start as GMOs can have drastic effects in the produce or other food that we eat. Most of the time we know they are genetically modified anyway so labeling them are not that big of a deal. I don't think this has any effect on the prices though, as it is still the same food and if anything, it will cause some people to switch to wholesale foods.
