Let's talk: The death penalty under scrutiny http://www.cnn.com/2014/03/03/us/death-row-stories-hangout/index.html This article closely discusses one man, Elmore, who was found guilty of raping a white elderly women. After an eighty day trial he was found guilty. He waited years to receive his consequence, but they revisited his case and he took a prosecutors offer to plead guilty in return for his freedom. He ended up spending thirty years in prison. I think it would be interesting to watch CNN's special on this and how all of this played out for him to not receive the death penalty. I don't know why they waste time and space. My momma always says, "don't do to others what you don't want done to you." So he should receive punishment for hurting that women and move on.
It's really sad and disgusting to see monsters like that not receiving the death penalty and merely taking jail time for the terrible crimes they committed. In my opinion, we don't use the death penalty enough. Things such as rape, murder, serial killing, etc. should be punishable by death. It's the fact that we don't punish the most heinous wrongdoings with death that our prisons are so overcrowded.
This is a very intriguing side to the death penalty in the United States. It shows that the death penalty along with our criminal justice system has many flaws. I personally agree with the death penalty because I feel that when terrible crimes are committed they should receive the ultimate punishment. Yet cases like the one talked about in this article show that something needs to be done to our justice system to ensure it is efficient and fair.
We should be very careful when using the death penalty. In some cases like this it can be the appropriate punishment for the crime. We just need to make sure that there is no question that the right person is convicted. There have been cases in the news lately that showed the wrong person was sent to prison. One person served 20 years before it was shown that he was innocent. We can let him out and give him a life back, but that is hard to do with a death penalty convict. If there is no doubt then execute, if there are questions, then we need to run the full appeals and review process to make sure nothing was missed.
The death penalty can be good and bad. I feel that if you do the crime you should be paying the time. But if someone does something so wrong and nasty, they should receive the death penalty. I also agree with the death penalty bc its not like the jails have room to hold all these criminals so they can just get rid of them and let the ones that have done bad but not as bad stay in there and suffer.
HEREEEEE WE GO, if you think that killing someone for killing someone is right, don't you think you are having the same mentality as the one who killed in the first place. honestly, it is way beyond our pay grade to be judging the life of someone else. it goes both ways with what Emily's mom says " don't do to others what you don't want done to you." You're sentencing someone to die, so then you would want someone to sentence you for death too? Now I completely understand that there is horrible crime in this world, such as what happened to that poor old lady, but there are ways to handle things better than, well you did wrong, die. It just doesn't solve a problem, look how many more people there are in the world, if you can change one that is that horrible, there's definitely enough light at the end of the tunnel to change others, more than likely before they become as this man. All i am saying is, really don't hope let alone wish that someone else's life is taken for their wrongs, no matter the degree, wrong is wrong, and sorry to tell you but no one is perfect. yes punishment, no, not death.
I honestly think that legalization is a stupid idea. No offence to the support. The majority of marijuana users are people who don't need it and legalization for medical use is actually useful. Medical use should be legalized but strict regulation should be applied to prevent people from acting like it is medical.
I don’t think there is anything wrong with the death penalty. I don’t agree with getting the death penalty for doing something minor. It is a good idea to give someone who murdered another human being the death penalty. An eye for an. You shouldn’t take another human beings life if you don’t want someone to take yours.
It is sad knowing that many monsters have only had to serve prison time even after all the horrifying things they have done. Seriously though the man raped a woman! All he received was 30 years in prison I'm not saying that isn't a long time but to me that's just sounds like a slap to the wrists for what he did. He truthfully should've received the death penalty for what he did!
http://centralohionorml.org/abc-6-medical-marijuana-town-hall/ This website gives video clips from the town hall meeting Wednesday over the legalization of medicinal marijuana in Ohio. I think a lot of the audience members raised good points. For example, the part 3 video raises good points about the amount doctors would prescribe and how people are not being put in jail for the possession of marijuana as per research and statistics. I think that even if you don't legalize it, it's still going to be out there and people are still going to find ways to get it. I'm not sure about how much it actually help patients or if it acts as a placebo, but if it's legalized then I guess you have to follow doctors orders or find another way to cope with the pain.
I think that medical marijuana should definitely be legalized, so it's nice to see Ohio looking into this. Regardless as to whether or not it's legal, people are still going to obtain it. They might as well make it legal and available for prescription for the people who would really need it. The other states that have legalized marijuana are doing pretty well, too, from what I've heard. And besides, it's an untapped market for Girl Scouts.
My question is, why hasn't marijuana been legalized already in Ohio? It's been legalized in a few states already, and studies and shown not only that it is less harmful than alcohol and most drugs on the streets, but only a very small percent of people have been arrested for possession of marijuana. It's a substance that is extremely easy to obtain, and we shouldn't let the choices of a few ruin a perfectly legal thing for us all.
I agree strongly with both of you, marijuana should definitely be legalized in all states not just Ohio. Its nice to know that we as a state are considering following in the positive foot steps of some other states. It is no secret that people all over the U.S. use marijuana everyday and normally don't get punished very harshly if at all. If people want it they are going to get it regardless so it is stupid to not legalize it and make it easier for people to get who need it for medical use. There are plenty of studies that show the health benefits of marijuana for some people with medical problems. There are many very dangerous and addicting drugs that are legal with a prescription that are much worse than marijuana so it doesn't make sense that it wouldn't be legal.
I am not only 100% for the passage of medicinal marijuana but also recreational marijuana. Doing so would save taxpayer money for all of the people who have been jailed because of marijuana possession and I find it a little ironic that people are allowed to consume alcohol despite it's addicting properties whereas marijuana has a very low possibility of addiction. We all know the real reason is the government's inability to tax it at this point, but I digress.
I agree that the legalization of marijuana would help taxpayers. I personally would never touch it, but it would save space in jails for people that actually deserve it. It also would save time and energy for law officers who are searching for criminals. I also think that the government should spend their time worrying about more important things, liking helping get America out of its terrible debt or raising its economy while lowering the unemployment.
I completely agree with Lea. Lets be honest, we all know that the government hasn't legalized marijuana because they can't tax it. Legalizing marijuana would also greatly benefit taxpayers because then there would be less tax due to less people being convicted for marijuana use. So yeah lets legalize the use of medical marijuana.
Marijuana=money. Another thing it would be safer for people to start buying it from a registered shop then getting it from the streets when it has a possibility of being laced with other drugs. when you buy from a dealer on the street you never know what your really getting. This could make it a safer envirement all around for recreational use.
http://uk.reuters.com/article/2014/03/06/uk-ukraine-idUKBREA1H0EM20140306 So, Crimea wants to be a part of Russia because of the Russian population. To me, Crimea's parliament can't just vote and say "Welp, we're gonna be part of Russia again!" A lot of the reason is that a lot of people grew up as part of the USSR and that ties into the half that wants to be a part of Russia. I'm relieved that the EU and US has gotten involved because it's getting pretty sloppy to be honest.
I think we should be very careful before we get actively involved in this region. If the majority of a people want to take their country in one direction who are we to get involved and tell them no. We should be involved if they are acting out of fear or if their basic human rights are being violated. We need to stick with diplomacy and economic pressure to start rather than doing something more direct.
I agree with sasha, we should be careful in the things we get involved in. Sometimes i wonder why we even get involvedthings, i think the world would be much nicer if the US stayed out of everyone's business and only focused on us. We shouldnt be getting in other countries business , that just makes them mad and causes drama between between the US and that country
http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/ukraine-crisis/russia-committing-act-war-n46386 The focus of this article is to show weather the actions in Ukraine are an act of war or just an act of aggression. While America, Canada, and the United Kingdom have only condoned this as an act of aggression, Ukraine has seen it as an act of war. Ultimately "war" is in the eye of the beholder, or "what history demonstrates is that an act of war exists when a country says it does."
I can see this through the eyes of Ukraine. They are seeing it as a war because they are losing their territory to Russia. This is seen as a war for them because them Russia is fighting them for the territory and they are the target, that is why they are seeing it as Russia causing an act of war. The reason America, Canada, and the United Kingdom think that is just aggression is because they are not in that position right now and they are not being targeted. These countries are sort of just spectators in a way, they are only seeing these things not happening, not experiencing.
http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/cpac/christie-gop-not-media-must-define-who-we-are-n46071 Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey said that Republicans must have a provacative message that drowns out the media's efforts to "define who we are." While not mentioning his ongoing scandal he says "we've (the GOP) got to start talking about what we're for and not what we're against." Chris slammed the Democrats as the "party of intolerance" and the presidents push to reduce income inequality. Chris doesn't see income inequality as the problem, but an opportunity inequality for American citizens. Devin Watkins, a law student at George Mason University, said that he would without a doubt vote for Chris at the GOP 2016 nominee.
With the marijuana thing, I think it should be legalized ONLY for medical use. I say that because no matter what the US does, people are still going to have the black market to go to so they don't have to face the idea of taxes. When legalized, they shouldn't be able to open stores and sell it. Just the Drs. be able to prescribe it.
I also think it should only be used to medical use. I do think that no matter what the govt says people are going to do it , but legalizing it will just increase its use. I dont think it should be in stores and people can only access it through a doctor.
Well the easiest part about this is to say its deceitful to take action. As Kristina said "people are still going to have the black market" it's easy to say well hey it's a drug and it is addicting and that we should all just stop it from happening. Or to say, legalize it, there's been more deaths from other things or that it's not deadly. There's so many things you can say but the cold truth is that there will always be something new to come in and destroy the plans that were meant to stop. You can't defeat the inevitable, and it's inevitable that marijuana, weed, trees, whatever you want to call it, will be in use whether legal or not. It can go two of both ways. You legalize it, it doubles, you don't legalize it, it's still there.
I do see what Hillary is saying, but I do agree that saying Putin is another Hitler is not really right, it could end up to that happening, but right now there is not enough evidence to say that Putin is going to end up trying to take over more and killing millions and torturing millions. So far, Hitler is way worse than Putin is at the moment.
I think that Hillary is just using Ad Hominem remarks to insult Putin. Hitler is incomparable to Putin. Putin is not the only person to kill over land and we have been in the same place they have. There have definitely been worse than this. I honestly do not see any thing else here other than another moment in history that will eventually fade out.
I think they comparison of Putin to Hitler is a big enough reason to make Putting mad and get into some kind of threat battle with the United States like how the threat battle the United states was involved in with North Korea. I think what Hilary did was selfish because she wasn’t thinking about what she was saying. She’s affiliated with the government so she should be careful.
i found this very funny. Hillary is just shooting verbal bombs at those Russians. i mean, if he wasn't acting like a little war monger then he wouldn't being bullied by the big bad ol'Hillary. Maybe being compared to something as terriable as that will make him repent his ways.
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2014/03/05/poll-record-high-favor-legal-same-sex-marriage/ I can't help but think about what Mrs. Frase taught us about polls and how they give it a 2% give. Half of me is happy that the percent has increased since the last time they took the poll, but, at the same time, I feel dejected about the fact that this is not a "real" number. The rest of the article is cool, as well, talking about how their is a ratio for how each party, Republican, Independent, or Democratic, feels about same sex marriage, and those numbers are pretty promising, as well. I hope our country soon comes to the conclusion of making gay-lesbian marriages legal.
