http://www.cbsnews.com/news/white-house-reviewing-ugandan-relations-due-to-anti-gay-law/ This article is about the President of Uganda signing an anti-gay bill into law. The Ugandian President said that the West is promoting homosexuality in Africa. I think that is absolutely absurd. Our country is still in turmoil with itself over all of the homosexuality laws. We are promoting equality, freedom, and fair treatment. That was just an excuse because the president is against homosexuality. I think it's unfair, uncalled for, and very wrong.
I agree, to say that America is "promoting homosexuality" is wrong in every way, shape, and form. America isn't promoting homosexuality, but more so is embracing that people like homosexuals want the discrimination against them to stop and for their rights to be on equal grounds as those of everyone else. The fact that Uganda is imposing a complete outlaw of homosexuality is outrageous and will certainly bring about trouble in the coming weeks.
I don't even understand why these places take such drastic measures to prevent homosexuality. And I agree with what you said, Anthony. More Americans are embracing homosexuality, not promoting it. Homosexuals will continue to advocate for their rights, just like any other oppressed group. This Ugandan law is totally whack.
As a fellow African I do agree that the West does influence a lot of things that the East does come up with. I am not Ugandan but I feel like people do travel and they come back with new things that they have learned and they apply it to their daily lives. I am not saying people from Africa traveled to America, saw gay people and then went back home saying they were gay. I am saying that they traveled, saw the acceptance over here in America and thought they could get the same support back home.
I think that is sooooo wrong! Just because the president doesn't approve of it doesn't mean the people that live their don't. It is their life to do what they want and be with who they want! So in other words, they are saying America is making other places look bad for accepting gays.
This kinda goes along with the Businesses not serving gays. I dont understand why america cant just make up their minds about homosexuality. It seems like one minute its okay and the next its not. I also dont think that the president should be able to sign this bill into law because in my opinion it goes against the Constitution. Everyone should be equal whether gay or not.
That is terrible, but this is their country and they can do what they want. And in no way are we promoting homosexuality. If at all, a large part is against it and we are slowly accepting it, which we should. I dont see what's wrong with it. "You don't see homosexuals trying to make others. Only do you see heterosexuals trying to force their sexuality on them"
Honestly, I would say that the US is promoting homosexuality. However, it's not a bad thing. I'd say that we're are promoting heterosexuality as well. We're promoting all of the differences between everybody. We're promoting not "the great melting pot", but instead, "the salad bowl". We're promoting what makes a person themselves. We're promoting America.
We as a country are in the very early stages of allowing homosexuality to have a prominent stance in our culture and government. We are promoting it within our own country, I do not think this is be translated outside of our country, in places such as Africa. This President needs to stop using us as a scape-goat, to allow his own agenda.
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/john-mccain-i-hope-jan-brewer-vetoes-gay-bill/ This article is about how two Republican Arizona Senators are trying to persuade Jan Brewer no to sign a bill into law saying that businesses don't have to service gays based on religious beliefs. I think this is ridiculous. Why is it okay for businesses to discriminate against gays based on their religious beliefs? Because it isn't. It isn't fair and again, it represents inequality. It is really saddening that America today is still dealing with discrimination, even after everything we have been through.
I agree Emily. I think we keep pushing and pushing for equality and people are just coming up with more ways to try and stop it or make it difficult. Either way, gays are going to kick butt and dominate and we should be supporting them with having equal rights in our country without discrimination.
This is just sad. To think that people in America have sunk so low as to use religious discrimination to actually discriminate against people life choices. That's sick and wrong, and if I'm not mistaken, a violation of the 1st amendment. Is the business going to discriminate against straight people for their religious beliefs? No, because they just want to keep homosexuals from being equal with their peers.
Yeah, it's so sick that people want to try to discriminate due to their religious beliefs. American people should have already learned from their past, discrimination is not going to accomplish anything. This is a huge inequality, and it's shocking that anything like this would even make it close to passing. These people have it all wrong, anyway. Gay people are so cute. And clean. Why wouldn't they want them to be part of their businesses?
I think it's so interesting the ways people will bend and interpret laws to make them go their own way. From a business standpoint, I don't see why anyone would pick and choose who can have their services based on who's bumping uglies with whom. I know that this won't go any farther from whatever talks they're placing with it, because it's not going to go down quietly. The overwhelming support for same sex marriage is great, though.
I think businesses should have that right, I do not agree with it but as a business in America they do have that right. I don’t think they could be able to differentiate what customer is gay and what customer is not unless they are really flamboyant. But if you love a store that much you should conceal yourself and act as an everyday American and get service without a problem.
I agree with Emily. How can it be that we have overcome so many things but not discrimination? This is selfish of the Arizona people to even begin to support this bill. How can anyone support a bill that discriminates against others that are happy living the lifestyle they live. This is unethical, and like saying you do not like someone because they choose chocolate milk over white, except this is targeting a huge growing community that either way has always been discriminated against and will continue to be discriminated against.
I think it is the right of any private business to decide who it will serve and who it will not. How is "No shoes, No shirt, No service" any different than choosing not to provide service to gays or anyone else? Maybe we should pass a law that says businesses can not discriminate against barefoot people. How would the store even know if someone is gay anyway? Do gay people automatically walk in to a store and announce their orientation? People can also vote with their pocketbooks. If enough people don't like that store's policy of not servicing gays, then they can shop elsewhere and convince others to do the same. That business will not survive with no customers. We don't need to legislate this behavior, just take action as a community and express yourselves economically.
I completely think this is unfair to gays. If your going to have a business opened to the public, it should be public. Shouldn't exclude gays because of religious beliefs. Even if religious you shouldn't be judging people. I also agree with Sasha people don't just announce they are gay so how would the business even know. I think this is defiantly a big deal and it does represent discrimination.
I agree with Sasha. She is right when she said that private businesses have the right to who they want to serve. She made a great point. Nobody knows who's gay or not. How would anyone even know unless they do announce if they are.
there had been a lot of steps in the right direction for gay rights, but then you get something like this coming up for no real reason other than to discriminate. what are they going to do next? revert back to saying we can serve minority's at private businesses. If discrimination of race is wrong, why isn't discrimination of sexuality wrong?
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2014/02/24/dean-of-u-s-house-to-retire/ This article is about how John Dingell has decided to retire from Congress. He has been a member of the House of Representatives for 58 years. Although he is healthy enough to serve another term, he has stated that, "This is not the Congress I know and love." Congress has been lacking partisanship for quite some time. I agree that Congress seems as a distant battle between its members, but of course there will be change if he has been in it for so long.
Firstly, haha he old. Secondly, haha he really be old. Thirdly, I don't think that it's that big of a deal that he's retiring, maybe I'd care more if his last name wasn't Dingell or if he had a larger job or placement or if he was in a big sex scandal. As Daft Punk once said "Love, love, make love, love, love, make love". French house aside, Congress is going to change. Everything is changing, politics are changing. As Daft Punk once said, "Buy it, use it, break it, fix it, trash it, change it, mail - upgrade it, charge it, point it, zoom it, press it, snap it, work it, quick - erase it, write it, cut it, paste it, save it, load it, check it, quick - rewrite it, plug it, play it, burn it, rip it, drag and drop it, zip - unzip it, lock it, fill it, call it, find it, view it, code it, jam - unlock it, surf it, scroll it, pause it, click it, cross it, crack it, switch - update it, name it, rate it, tune it, print it, scan it, send it, fax - rename it, touch it, bring it, pay it, watch it, turn it, leave it, start - format it."
Eh, I wouldn't really make one person retiring from Congress a big deal. I mean, yes, the statement may seem powerful, but Congress isn't the legislative body that anyone knows and loves. And there are 534 other members of Congress. He's just another lame duck.
This could be made into a big deal if the right people say the right things about it, but I do not think that anyone will take a second look unless there are many people who retire, that have been senior members for a long time, which I don't see happening. Even so I feel like it is a good thing to get fresh blood into power positions in our government and the more and newer ideas the more we will move forward.
In this article, the Arizona governor vetoed the state's bill to give business owners the right to deny business to gay people over religious grounds. This I feel is a very good step in the right direction. The state passing this bill would have hurt their economy, because the NFL vowed to move the Superbowl from Arizona to another city in the upcoming year because of this bill. Discrimination should not be an aspect in any religion. It is the year 2014 and by now I think people should be over the discrimination of the LGBT community. http://www.cnn.com/2014/02/26/politics/religious-freedom-states/index.html?hpt=hp_t1
I completely agree with Gladys. This is a good sign that discrimination is possibly slowly going away. I still don't think it was right to even propose this type of bill. But as long as it didn't pass its ok in a way. The NFL was right by moving the location of the Superbowl due to this bill.
I agree, this is a big step in the right direction. The public opinion on sexuality is beginning to take a great shape, not only of sexuality, but of equality. If segregation of race is unconstitutional, why should segregation of sexuality?
http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/ukraine-crisis/obama-russia-there-will-be-costs-ukraine-intervention-n41586 Obama has said that there will be costs to any military intervention in Ukraine by Russian military forces after they have reportedly entered an area of Ukraine and that the White House is "deeply disturbed" by the Russian presence there. They believe that 2000 or more Russians have landed in Ukraine most likely by air. Ukraine's UN ambassador Yuriy Sergeyev told reporters that Ukraine is strong enough to defend itself however.
I actually suprisingly have no clue on what this whole thing was about, all i would hear is that Ukraine was having a bad time. I actually do not know a lot about this whole situation, but from what i can read here, i could probably think that Ukraine is strong enough to defend themselves.
if they are strong enough to defend themselves, don't stick your head in it. again im going to say lets just worry about us for a bit so we can get back on track. right now are economy's crap and they want to worry about this?We just need a good old clinton'ing to get the job done. then we he gets it back on track he knows how to party.
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2014/02/27/biden-2016-is-lifetimes-away/ While Biden does look forward to 2016 when he is still currently still planning to run for presidency he is focused on the here and now. He is quoted on saying "everybody wants to talk about 2016. That's lifetimes away." The Democratic party and Biden are looking to hold it's seats in the Senate and gain more seats in the House. They fear it will be difficult to gain/hold seats in the upcoming midterm elections due to lower voter turn out favoring the GOP, most of its seats up for renewal are in either red or purple states, and because of Obama's low approval rating.
This kind of goes with an article I posted some time, maybe last week. But the article i read says on how people do not really think about it that much, but the 2016 election is closer than anybody feels. Because of this, politicians have to be getting ready for this election even thought it is a couple years away, to them, it is coming up tomorrow.
http://crossfire.blogs.cnn.com/2014/02/27/is-america-turning-into-a-nanny-state/ I find this article very interesting. I do not find anything wrong with what the First Lady has done for our health when it comes to the food we consume. America is one of the fattest countries in the world, if not THE fattest and in it getting worse everyday. I think that this is a reform that we needed and it will benefit us in the long-run. Plus, I only think that people are complaining because we have been "fatties" for so long.
http://www.cnn.com/2014/02/26/politics/arizona-brewer-bill/index.html I think that the governor made a very wise decision and I love her phrasing for why she vetoed the bill. She simply stated that change was coming and despite the fact that people do not like what is going on with the marriage-front, it is happening. Personally, I think that people need to get over their prejudices and suck it up.
