http://security.blogs.cnn.com/2014/01/31/u-s-finalizing-sochi-evacuation-contingency-plans/?iref=allsearch This article explains how the U.S. Military is involved in the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Russia is responsible for maintaining the safety and protection needed for the Olympic participants, but the U.S. Military has the right to intervene in the event of an accident, injury, or evacuation after the participant has seeked medical care at a Russian hospital. I think it is important that our Olympic participants are safe and can focus on getting gold!
I think that it is good that the people participating in the Olympics feel safe and are taken care off. At the same time though it is another instance of us feeling as if we need to control the events that take place. We are not hosting these Olympics and should not try to intervene with other peoples business. Its like walking into someone else's birthday party and demanding presents.
Heightened security is definitely a priority during this year's Olympic Games in Sochi. With the threat of Russian terrorists looming overhead, everyone will definitely feel safer knowing that if a crisis does occur, the U.S. will be able to step in. Know the question on my mind is, what could happen if the U.S. intervenes. We're already on thin ice with Russia after the events of Syria, but a misstep could send things over the edge.
I think this is great because the Olympics need to be safe. I think if something were to happen & we were there we would look good but I also dont understand why the US needs to get involved in something we are not apart of ? It is just another door for chaos. Like Anthony said we are already not on good terms with russia.
I think this is a great idea to have U.S citizens being protected by their own people, people they know and trust so they feel safer but this is also an example of how the U.S can’t stop intervening in things could be potentially handled by the person responsible. I am sure Russia didn’t just create a military yesterday and they know what they are doing and can take care of the Olympians.
I don't think that the US military should be present at the Olympics. I feel that the olypics are when the world are united as one and everyone is at peace. if there is a need for military or police then the local law enforcement and UN powers can be present but that's it. no foreign powers present, think about when the US host the Olympics, we don't want Russian military here.
I agree that it seems like a slap to the Russians to tell them that our military will come in and evacuate and rescue American athletes and citizens in event of an emergency. We would feel offended and threatened if some other nation told us that they would send troops onto US soil because they thought we could not handle a crisis. However, if the two governments develop procedures and policies to allow this and practice this cooperative practice then this would be a good thing. The two countries would gain a better understanding of each other and how they each think and thereby help prevent future misunderstandings. The same thing we do with our Allies in Joint military exercises; think Korea. So if we treat it as a cooperative exercise rather than an intimidation and threat of unilateral action this could be a good thing.
i feel that this is okay as long as its only in case of an American emergency.as long as they do not interfere with the games or the Russian law enforcement, i think it will be okay. I think for them just being there it might make more American Olympians feel at ease and even help with the pressure on Russia to keep everyone at these games safe.
I think that its good to have a sense of safety, however, I feel as if its not the U.S. military's place to be there. If the u.s. is sending in security what is stopping all the other countries from sending in troops? I agree that the u.s. needs to be careful since we are already on thin ice with Russia.
I agree but disagree as well. They shouldn't send our athletes because the areas there aren't clean and most of the hotels and roads arent even dumb. Sometimes it seems like out government does stuff just to make us mad.
Alright dudes, this is totes okay. Why wouldn't we want to have more military presence in every part of the world besides our on soil? Have you played the game RISK? You'd never win unless your military was all over the map. Same aspect applies here, just in case mean ol' Russia wants to start a fight over the Olympics. Think about it! It makes sense!
I think that this is a good thing, as long as we don't act except in case of emergency. Yeah, it might seem like its us not trusting them..however, those are citizens of our country and they should be protected.
http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_news/2014/02/03/22556568-ofa-airs-new-tv-ad-urging-congress-to-raise-minimum-wage This article/video is another example of getting Congress' support to raise minimum wage to $10.10 as well as equal pay for women. This quick video is very cheesy but to the point that Obama is trying to get Congress to consider this proposal. I think minimum wage should be increase for those struggling in our economy, but won't this cause inflation anyway?
I believe minimum wage should be raised, but not so much so fast. It will actually will cost companies money and cause them to let employees go to be able to pay the new minimum wage to the employees they keep. Some companies will have machines replace the workers so that they can pay the new wage. This is bad for young adults that are trying to get temporary jobs while in school.
Have you looked at wealth distribution in the United States? They could use to lose a few dollars, honestly. The raise in minimum raise is a response to the disproportionate cost of living versus minimum wage, and minimum wage itself is designed to decrease poverty levels. The raise in minimum wage will hopefully potentially decrease poverty levels and make the gaping hole of a wage gap a little smaller. Now, I've got my own beliefs over this subject but I'm not gonna get into it haha... Jean Jacques Rousseau and the Marxist cru 4 lyfe...
Minimum wage is definitely overdue to be raised in my opinion, but such a drastic raise over a small span of time could have unforeseeable outcomes on our already rickety economy. I think that Congress and the President should take raising minimum wage at a much slower pace, maybe by $0.75 to $1.00, rather than $3.00.
It's totally impossible for people to live on minimum wage as it is. As far as inflation goes, I feel like prices have already inflated enough that minimum wage should be raised to compensate. It would help deteriorate the gap between economic classes a little.
It is possible to live on minimum wage but it is not so easy. I feel like it should go up a little bit but not $10. Our inflation is bad enough as it is. I think the raise is huge over such a little period of time, the could slowly raise it, not so fast. Like Emily said it could potentially cost businesses more money as well
I do think the debit deficit should be raised. Congress needs to come to a compromise based on Obama’s proposal. I don’t think raising taxes without raising the deficit is going to work because it’ll just be putting American citizens at a disposition. Raising taxes even at the lowest percentage isn’t really going to pay anything back.
Minimum Wage should deffinatly be raised!! Also the servers pay should be raised, when I was a server I only made 3.85 an hour plus tips. I worked a lot harder than the hostesses and cashers. I think that servers deserve minimum wage plus tips. I also think that women should make the same as men, I just figured that they did. My mom makes the most at the company she works at so I guess i never realized women don't make as much as some men.
This is a good idea in theory but does not seem well thought out in execution or in understanding the possible ripple effects it could have. Different areas of our country have vastly different costs of living and that should be taken into account rather than just implementing a large jump for the whole nation. And a more gradual approach would allow the government to identify and maybe correct any unforeseen bad effects this jump could have on the economy and small businesses. This same thing happened with the Affordable Care Act. Great in theory but with unintended consequences. Some companies have cut the number of hours of their part-time employees in order to stay under the federal cap, in effect decreasing the earnings of millions. Will this big jump in minimum wage do the same thing? Companies cut hours so that their payroll costs do not go up? More hours x lower pay balanced as fewer hours x higher pay. A net no change in spending power of the employee, just less work stability.
i feel like if we raised the minimum wage so much in such little time, we would have an inflation and company's having to let people go because they cant pay all of there workers. if people are let go this can just defeat the whole purpose of trying to get out of poverty. Yes some people would but others might just end up worse not making any money and jobless. i think this is a good idea, but we just have to ease our way to that mark of 10 dollars.
I feel like raising the minimum wage will do absolutely nothing, really. The reason minimum wage was raised previously was due to the value of money going down. Essentially, we are just resetting it to a previous value represented by today's economic standards. The value of the money will eventually go down and then it will be like we didn't even have a raise in wages. We will want another.
I do not think that minimum wage should be raised. It may be helpful short term, but it will end up causing more harm to the economy than good. Minimum wage jobs are exactly that, minimum wage jobs, and should not be anything more. Minimum wage jobs have a very important role in the economy. They help give experience to inexperienced workers so they can be better off at a higher paying job. Also, by raising minimum wage it will cause prices to rise so in the end the value of the dollar will be right back where it was in the beginning. Raising the minimum wage would be a waste and should not be done, it will do way more harm than good.
I feel the same about this subject as many of the other bloggers do. If we raise minimum raise, the price of things will also increase and the value of the dollar will be exactly where it is now.
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/hundreds-of-army-soldiers-investigated-for-recruiting-kickback-scheme/ This article is about a program the Army National Guard created to help with recruits. It was so effective that it also became an area of fraud. A seasoned soldier could say someone else referred them and the soldier would get pay and the seasoned soldier would get kickbacks. I think its horrible that people would take advantage of these programs that are meant to help. It's very annoying as well.
I think that this is a morally wrong thing to have done, and they should just be glad to have recruited more people for their cause, and not wanted to receive this much compensation. This was a legit and successful program until a few greedy men, wanted to dip their hands into the pot. Now a few people are most likely going to ruin the whole program for everyone.
I highly agree with you two. I agree because programs like these are literally meant to help the people who need help, not to give benefits to the people who do not need it. If i was in that situation, i would not be able to morally take the pay or kickbacks.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-25182823 Found this nifty little article on what's going on in Ukraine on BBC. Made protesters want to protest more. I think that this is absolutely justified and that the president is a fool, however I hope for the safety of the citizens/protesters.
That's so scummy, passing anti-protest laws during a protest. The president should just suck it up and listen to his people. GO figure they're going to want to keep protesting. It's clear that these people are gonna keep going until the president negotiates, so why not..like...do that. I agree that the president is a fool and I hope these laws are revoked or something.
I feel as if that is a childish move on his part. They're protesting so he makes an anti-protest law? Sounds like an argument with your sibling when you are both telling each other to shut up repeatively because you want the last word. Obviously, if they're are protest now, they will just protest more. He has to deal with the problem, not avoid it.
Its a shame that a president would make an anti-protesting law just because people are protesting against him. The people are protesting for a good reason too. Why would you turn down a partnership that would greatly benefit your country. Seems pretty dumb.
I think he should of took the partnership. But then again I can see where he was trying to protect the citizens. But shouldn't the citizens have a say in what they think should happen? I think they should have a say, I mean, we do.
The newest report on Obamacare says that jobs are shrinking. This ridiculous claim is an embarrassment made by the non partisan congressional budget office. I completely agree with you! I think that they are just trying to make the people turn against a program that really isn't bad. My mom got hers and it was an easy process and considering that my mom was without health care benefits for the past 5 or 6 years, I consider the Affordable Care Act program to not be bad at all. It is ridiculous that people, ALL of us, have to constantly put others down and cause unrest.
The United Sates is making a mistake sending it's American athletes to Sochi. Sochi is a terror one. Officials there are currently looking for a terrorist on the loose. This is just a tragedy waiting to happen. The US should not be letting American citizens travel to Russia when they know the imminent danger. Russia too has not asked for any additional assistance in taking security measures. The situation is so bad that US athletes are being warned not to wear their uniforms outside of the venues out of fear of being attacked. This US is taking a huge risk send 400+ athletes, coaches, and officials there, not to mention the American spectators attending. http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/24/us/sochi-us-security/index.html?iid=article_sidebar
I both agree and disagree with the US sending our athletes to Sochi. I agree because why would we want to send our own citizens to a terror area. I also disagree because these athletes have worked so long for this opportunity and we can't just take that away from them. It is their choice to go.

While he does show signs of good ideas there is a major problem arising from his video. http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/sochi-olympics/john-kerry-ann-curry-i-would-let-my-daughter-go-n23986 Secretary of State John Kerry during an interview was asked the question of would he let one of his daughters go to the Olympic games in Sochi given the current situation and he replied yes. He believes that if America wants to go, including his daughter, I would say go. He only asks that athletes and fans alike stay vigilant and attentive to their surroundings. Russian leaders are still guaranteeing that everyone at the games will be safe.
In cases like these, I am thinking that anything could happen. But I am sure that no matter what these athletes would go, because I'm sure if anyone got a chance like that, they would take it in a heartbeat, butI think it would really be a good idea for the Americans to stay vigilant because like i said, anything can happen to these athletes and that would not be a good memory from the Sochi games.
I think that it is understandable that Secretary of State John Kerry said he would not be apposed to letting his daughter go to the Olympics in Russia. The majority of these athletes are legally adults and a right to make the decision on whether or not going would be worth it to them. The ones that are not adults give the right of making that decision to their parents who only want the best for their children. Their is plenty of risk in life no matter what and this is a risk that is worth it to them.
OH MY FREAKING GOODNESS! This is crazy. What is our world coming to? I did not think that drinking so much grape juice could kill a child, but now that I know it can and that a child's PARENTS did this, I am mortified... This is ridiculous and horrible... I think that the parents should no DOUBT go to jail, and if not for life, for a VERY VERY VERY long time... I read the title of the article and almost spit because of the ridiculousness of the matter... Wow.
This article is about 4 gay rights activists being arrested on the opening day of the Olympics. These protesters were arrested for taking photos with a banner referring to anti discrimination in the Olympics. This is because Russian laws ban unsanctioned protests along with a law banning gay "propaganda" from reaching minors which has drawn national criticism and calls to boycott the Russians games. In my opinion these law strip away citizens rights and are backing discrimination which is wrong.

ReplyDeleteSecretary of State John Kerry during an interview was asked the question of would he let one of his daughters go to the Olympic games in Sochi given the current situation and he replied yes.
DeleteI think that it is understandable that Secretary of State John Kerry said he would not be apposed to letting his daughter go to the Olympics in Russia. The majority of these athletes are legally adults and a right to make the decision on whether or not going would be worth it to them. The ones that are not adults give the right of making that decision to their parents who only want the best for their children. Their is plenty of risk in life no matter what and this is a risk that is worth it to them.

ReplyDeleteThis is truly a tragic story of when stupid people can end a life.
Wow.

ReplyDeleteThis article is about 4 gay rights activists being arrested on the opening day of the Olympics.
