This article talks about Obama's upcoming State of the Union address tonight. It points out the fact that this will more or less be his defining test. This is because his last Union address' have really just been talk with no real action following them. He has failed achieve most of his priorities talked about in his address'. They have been mainly irrelevant to how the year turned out for the nation. So this year's will be his test to see if he is capable of doing what he promises our country or if it will be meaningless just like the others.
I think these speeches are pointless. They make promises that are most likely not going to be kept. I agree that there will be little to no action taking on the specific things he addressed and it is just fooling the hopes citizen's have for positive change this year. It will be interesting to see if Obama actually tries to better the economy and our middle class Americans.
I think that these speeches can give us a look at how our leaders think; not only the speech itself, but the party representatives responses to the speech. I don't think the president will be able to accomplish everything he promised. What worries me is the method he has been proposing before the speech on how he will accomplish his goals. He plans to bypass Congress and move ahead with his policies. This seems to me to be undermining the very check and balance system that our country was founded on. It looks like he is trying to put more power into the presidency and make Congress into a useless body with no governing powers.
I don’t think the speeches are completely pointless. They take a lot of time and a lot of prep time and at the end you are left with more questions than you had started out with but I think the speeches are a great way to find out what is going on with the government and know what they are planning to do about worldly situations and also know what is going on in the united states.
I supported Obama, not gunna lie, but ever since he has been our "Commander in Chief" he has yet to prove he does what he promises to say. Good thing he never promised to catch bin laden otherwise we would've never gotten him. He hasn't done much, but he's said a lot, and his time is coming into an end I guess we are going to have to see how he will actually hold up what he thinks he's going to do.
I got 4 words for you all...Survival of the Fittest. If they can't handle how fit our president is, then they shouldn't come to the gun show. President Obama lifts weights for a reason...so he can show his political strength at the state of the union. Think of it as big ol' Arnold Schwarzenegger at the Mr. Universe. He's the top dog on campus right now, and he has to show the pups the ropes. Ain't no one gonna step outta line with big ol' Barack Hussein Obama showing off his presidency. Republicans best be hitting the gym and getting swole if they wanna step to our president after this speech!!
I honestly think that these speeches are important for spreading the agenda of the president to non-activists that would otherwise not get the information. True, there really was not much action towards his promises but hopefully he can provide some reassurance towards new issues.
This article expresses the many problems couples face even after the legalization of gay marriage. One of these problems faced is who to invite to the wedding, which can be hard because even though family and friends don't mind the relationship they may strongly oppose gay marriage. Another is the fact that most states don't recognize sexual orientation in their discrimination laws. This means that florists, wedding planners, and locations can refuse same sex couples. Tradition is also a big problems, weddings now are based on the "bride" and "groom" so each persons role must be figured out. Also while gay marriage may be legal in some states in America it may not be recognized in other countries so travel can be hard.
This in itself is a grade-a example of the incompatibilities of the United States government. Here, we have had DOMA turned down and federally, it is illegal to disallow same-sex marriages. Yet, in some states it is perfectly legal to not award a same-sex couple a marriage license. It's frustrating that in some states it's perfectly legal to discriminate against one based on their gender identity (which is hugely overlooked cough cough) and sexual orientation.
Like Gabby and Lea have said this article does prove that there are still many issues even with gay marriage being legalized in many states. Many of those problems are because of peoples views on homosexuality being "bad" If people weren't so narrow minded I believe that there wouldn't be many issues surrounding gay marriage
Not to be the bad egg here but besides the discrimination in the laws that are mentioned, these issues are just how things are right now. Yeah people in your family might not like gays, but they were raised in a time where that was the consensus (most likely). And with the bride and groom marriage thing, thats just the tradition they want in on. Its been a bride and groom thing since being gay was a thing, maybe more maybe less who knows?? Like sure it might be weird/annoying but thats like fighting your heart out for a piece of cake you really really want, then saying the flavor makes actually eating the cake difficult to do.
http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/29/politics/immigration-reform-state-of-the-union/index.html?hpt=po_c1 This article was about DACA or the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which allows some illegal immigrants who are minors to stay in the United States. To me, DACA is a great program, and I'm glad to see that Cristian, the man mentioned in the article was able to stay in the United States and go to the State of The Union address. I am so glad that those who have come here to achieve and live a better life are able to do so, despite getting to the United States through illegal means.
I am torn on my opinion for the DACA program. I think it is great that America is willing to allow minor immigrants into our country to ensure a positive lifestyle and success some are willing to work for and achieve. On the other hand, they came here illegally and we cannot help and assist the people that live here now and the money allowing them to stay here is payed by those struggling people.
I think that allowing these people to stay in the United States is great. It opens entirely new opportunities for them and future generations of their families. By moving to the United States, even illegally, they are clearly showing that they are willing to take great risks to better their lives. To allow immigrants an opportunity to stay in the States is great.
Now here is the thing DACA is great, and the fact that there are those who get offended that they are helping Immigrants reach the American Dream is ridiculous. People come here with more struggles than those struggling here, but the difference is that they are willing to get even the least paying jobs and work longer hours just to get those same chances as the average family living here.
I believe that the DACA program is amazing! Like Brian said there are many already struggling but basically all immigrants here trying to reach the American Dream are working very poor paying jobs for many hours to get somewhere. I have seen what people have done to get to where there at right now I have many somewhat personal views on how it really is to be illegally here. Its a huge struggle because many people leave their family to help them out financially back home. By helping immigrant out with the DACA program is truly great.
This article is about how cold weather has left people stranded and in danger and whether or not the government should be doing something more about it. Should the government be spending more tax dollars paying plowers to clean the streets even though they will be covered soon again by snow? Yes they should, although it does cost more, people are in danger. It is snowing terribly in places where it snows "once in a blue moon". These people do not know how to deal with this kind of inclement weather, resulting in their life threatening situations they brought upon themselves. http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/29/us/winter-weather/index.html?hpt=hp_t1
I am in the middle on this issue. Yes, the government should be helping more to rescue the people in danger because they are in danger. They can't help themselves get out of that situation. On the other hand, it is true it only snows once in a blue moon, but people should be prepared for any kind of weather and know what to do if it does occur.
This is very disturbing and scary article about a failure of government. While many people like to have the least amount of government interference and control in their lives, one of the basic functions we all ask for is to provide for the safety and welfare of the governed citizens. Government officials in Georgia had a day warning about the coming storm and the effects it would have yet chose to ignore those warnings. The result is that there were children spending the night a schools on on freezing cold buses. That this situation cold have been prevented with just a little bit of caution and planning makes this almost criminal negligence and arrogance on the bureaucrats in that state's agencies. They should be investigated and held accountable for their extreme poor choices.
I do think the government should do more this winter because it is a very harsh winter. They are doing a great job plowing and salting the roads but I think they need to find spaces for those who are homeless or just build more shelters. It is too cold for people not to have a place to lay their heads at night.
I think that the government should help out, but not at a national level. This is a state issue and should be handled within each state. Also the states should do more to have people be safe, that is part of their job is to keep their citizens safe. I'm not saying just throw money at winterizing a state, it should be taken care of.
This is sad. I think the government should be sending more plowers out, streets are vary dangerous with ice & snow on them. With people going to work and school they could easily get hurt. I agree with curtis they should be state powers. They should do something about the homeless as well. People need to be in heated enviroments
its sad to think we cant even protect people from dying because of weather, when a states citizens can't fend for themselves, the state should be there to help them. it may be expensive, but how expensive is a life.
The "once in a blue moon" contributes more towards the local government, also giving them an excuse as well as the people in the community. In places like Atlanta, where these snow storms were completely unexpected, there was very little warning to allow for the government to take action and salt the roads and other things. Thus, leaving people stranded and amounting to the abandonment of cars. I think, a better warning/preemptive system being put in place would greatly have an effect.
This article is about Justin Bieber being petitioned against in the hope of having him deported and his green card revoked. The petition broke the same day he was caught driving under the influence, and required 100,000 signatures for the White House to address it. It topped that at 104,700 and climbing. I think he should be deported because the amount of illegal activity he participates in makes it question why other people are not given the chance to get a green card and he can still keep his while braking the law. http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/white-house-address-petition-deport-justin-bieber/story?id=22284038
Yeah, totally. If it were anyone else, they probably would've already had their citizenship revoked, no negotiations. He should be treated the same way anyone else would. This is clearly an issue that many people are behind. Any laws that are enforced on other green card holders should be enforced on Bieber.
I agree as well. If you look at how many illegal and inappropriate activities wealthy and famous people do, they don't really get in too much trouble. Whereas if it was someone in the lower and middle classes, they would have been in jail for a long time or been deported, Just because Bieber is famous, does not mean he gets a free pass on anything.
He should be deported because it shows America in a bad light as well as his home country. He has been arrested numerous times, he is a menus to society. He should be dealt with instantly and swiftly. He doesn't add anything to our country or community, and should be dealt with like a criminal.
I feel he should be deported . What he did was illegal, if it was anyone else theyd be deported too, just because hes famous he gets out of it. Thats wrong and not fair. He should have to face the consequences of his actions. He could have seriously hurt someone.
why should he not be deported? if it was anyone else that caused a crime with a green card they would be deported. just because he is famous doesn't mean he should get special privileges and hopefully this can show other celebrities they aren't immune to this.
http://nbcpolitics.nbcnews.com/_news/2014/01/30/22508099-gop-were-the-alternative-party?lite For this year House Speaker John Boehner wants to make drastic changes for the Republican party in the House. He wants to show the American public that they are just not the opposition to the White House, but an alternative to it. He believes that the party needs to improve voicing its opinions to help the American public. Last Thursday the party wrote a letter to Obama to highlight areas of common concern that they can work together on to improve. Lastly, Boehner wants to unify conservatives.
I think that this is a very interesting article and I wonder how it will work out. Peace in the White House and our government in general has never been a common going on and I wonder if they really offer compromise, and if they do, if the Democratic party will accept it. I think that this would offer a lot of growth towards our country if the two parties could compromise and not fight as much, but everyone knows that will probably never happen.
http://nbcpolitics.nbcnews.com/_news/2014/01/31/22523355-white-house-combats-cruel-catch-22-for-long-term-jobless?lite Get this person a job! Obama reports on how businesses are discriminating against people who have had a long period of time without having a job when that person can still be a hard worker, but just found themselves in a area not coming out of the recession as quickly, are in the wrong industry, or just had "bad luck" in their job hunting. Getting people back on the job faster is one of our top priorities Obama says.
I do think that this would really help the people that would need the help and are willing to work for that, but i also think that this would help the people who are not trying to look for a job and do not want to put in the work for finding a job and doing work in the job they would find. This could help people who need it, but also help people who are just lazy.
This article really interested me. This article caught my eye because a couple years ago, i actually went to China and i never thought of something like this happening (of course i was about 12 years old and i was not working for the American Press). But I do not think these reporters should have been completely kicked out, they should have known that their visa's would expire, but they were at China for business related things.
While I agree that they were there for a good reason, I do not think that there was any problem in kicking them out when their Visa's expired because in America, we are constantly complaining about how we have an excessive amount of illegals in our country, but our government really doesn't do a whole lot about it. I think that if one is to complain about our illegals and how they are not getting kicked out, then they have NO RIGHT to say that it is unfair for another country to do exactly what we support in their own country and kick out people who have expired Visa's or completely illegal there.
