I feel like the way they're acting about this is less doing what they think is right and standing for their beliefs and more trying to win a competition. In the article it was mentioned that the "solution" they came up with was less than a solution and more like "kicking the can down the road" and I totally agree with that. We'll probably find ourselves in this shutdown situation again in January/February. They're so stubbornly against being wrong that they are willing to harm economical things. The Republicans are realizing the reality of their situation. Obama is offering a budget and the Republicans totally don't like it even though they don't have anything better to offer.

    1. GETTIN' ON IT TUESDAY, FRAZIER. I totally agree with everything you're saying here. For a group of people so ashamed of the shutdown, they really must not have any shame to further their stubbornness and not further change their actions. We don't need a hurt economy over a bunch of rich white dudes refusing to eat some proverbial vegetables and grow up. We can only see what happens in January...

    2. I agree as well. They just keep pushing the problem further and further down the road. As this goes on, the problems will increase and become much worse than they were before. Procrastination does not improve anything. When one side comes up with a solution, the other does not like it. But as Kaitlynn said, they other side does not have anything better to offer.

    3. I for one am moderately content in knowing that the government shutdown has been "post-poned". Note I'm not saying avoided, because I know that government shutdown is unavoidable and will be imminent in the near and ever-growing close future.

As to the agreement between the Democrats and the GOP recently over the raising of our nation's borrowing limit, I feel that not only that the shutting-down of the government has lowered our population's trust in our government officials lower than it has been before, and has delivered a crippling blow to the GOP. If our own government can't keep itself open, then why should we have our trust in it? As to the GOP, I feel that they're finally "reaping what they've sown" in a sense. After so many attempts to block Obamacare from being passed, the GOP has to either admit to their faults and compromise with the Democrats, or find their own solution to our nation's problems concerning health-care, the debt ceiling, the borrowing limit, and other issues. All this talk from assorted Republican party affiliates, whom most of which voted along side the Democrats in the passing of the raising of the borrowing limit, about how the GOP "fought the good fight" and that they "just didn't win", solidifies an oncoming decline in the power of the GOP in our government in my opinion. If the GOP feels defeated now, then the realization that they need to compromise with the opposing party on an issue that they have been strongly opposing themselves for a while will surely lower they're morale. Ohio's own John Boehner, the Speaker of the House and a Republican voted against his own party, which shocked me.

    4. I completely agree Kaitlynn, Lea, Emily, and Anthony! I honestly think that our government officials are acting like teenagers, and I will forever stand by my definition of politics being "high school drama for adults" because that is literally how they are acting, like immature adolescents. I have to say that I am completely ashamed of the Republican party and their behavior at the moment. And the thing is, in politics, no one is ever the bigger man because if the role was reversed, like it was during the Bush administration, I could see the Democrats, whom I identify under, acting very similarly.

    5. It is amazing that Congress is congratulating themselves for solving the shutdown crisis and getting us back to business as usual. But like the others mentioned, we have really only postponed the crisis until January when this spending bill runs out. Are we just going to keep raising the debt ceiling every time Congress has a financial crisis? We need to hold them more accountable for their lack of real solutions. Maybe the threat of being replaced with more motivated representatives will get them to find and agree to real solutions, not just keep pushing off the decisions until later.

    6. I believe that the government shutdown is not totally over with, that we will be back in the same situtaion in january/ february after the spending bill is gone. Are we going to just add to the already unbelievable debt that the future generations are going to have tpo continue to pay? I hope that soon this problem is worked out with a solution that will actually work.

  2. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/cat-mayor-alaska-town-15-years-article-1.1116263 On a more lighthearted note, this cat has been mayor of Talkeetna after winning as a write in on the ballot for fifteen years. Those of the town say that he is the best mayor that they've ever had, he doesn't raise taxes and never interferes with business. Quite often, write-ins usually don't win, but with Stubbs it was a different story. The mayor is known to be a bit of a diva, however, as he is known to drink his water out of a wine glass laden with cat nip. Naughty naughty!

    1. First off, Lea, you have the funniest posts ever! Second, this is so awesome! Mayor Stubbs is a very attractive little fur ball. He is a little bossy with meowing to get what he wants, but hey, he is a political feline. I like how he doesn't raise the taxes. Maybe the other states should follow this fine example of a great, memorable mayor! :)

    2. Okay, I absolutely love this post! I remember hearing about this quite a while ago, however, since it was a facebook post, I figured that it was one of those things that people make up to see what reactions they would get. I always meant to look it up, however, I would forget. I think that Stubbs is a wonderful example for politicians to follow because obviously this cat knows what its doing while other politicians do not.

    3. we should just be ran by animals. if Mr. Stubbs can do it why cant the whole world accept the animal kind into politics. i would love to see other animals, but maybe more exotic like a giraffe hold lower offices. up with animals down with people!!

This article talks about how Warren Buffett does not believe that Republicans and Democrats should keep talking about raising the debt ceiling. All it causes is set new, higher taxation. Buffett says that the debt ceiling is a political weapon of mass destruction. I agree with this article because it is basically procrastination. Raising the debt ceiling will only create problems now and in the future.

    1. I think raising the debt ceiling is a terrible idea. Of course, most Americans agree with this, but is there really a way to stop it? Everyday, our government spending increases and we must pay the price. The only way is like Emily stated, to raise taxes. People aren't willing to pay more taxes, so we must raise the ceiling (or roof, but no pun intended!) I don't think we should raise it because our, and future, generations are going to have to deal with it!

    2. I think the debt ceiling should be raised just to give us a little bit of wiggle room. If the debt ceiling was to be raised all the government has to do is to cut down on useless spending. If they don’t raise the debt ceiling they are going to citizens at a disposition because they are going to raise taxes and they are high as they are already. If they raise the debt ceiling, cut useless spending and pay it off a little at a time they wouldn’t have to inconvenience anyone and we’d all move on with our lives.

    3. I agree that it should be raised a little but not that much, It;s just going to make things worse . People dont pay more taxes but they dont wanna see the debt ceiling go any higher. I don't of course either but i understand that we should have to pay a little more on our taxes. Generations after us are going to have to deal with it. Cutting down on useless spending would be a help too. I wish they would just pay it off

    4. I think that raising the debt ceiling is a bad idea, sooner or later were going to have to pay off all the debt we have acumulated, and making us more in debt just to help for a small while is not worth it, so are tax will be higher, but we have to do something to pay off the debt. Just cutting useless spending isnt going to be able to pay off such a large amount, it has to be a little bit of higher taxes and cutting useless spending.

This article is about two teachers being killed by their students and what precautions schools should take in order to prevent something like that from happening again. The article talks about security at school and having administrators carry weapons. I think having extra security and security cameras are a good idea and might protect students but I don’t think administrators should have to carry weapons because it could go bad. A student might get their hands on it or the administrator who was trusted with the gun in the first place snaps. I do think the government should definitely step in with stronger gun control laws and laws about kids being around gun or going to shooting ranges.

    1. I actually do agree with this. I agree with these precautions and what should be done, because of all of these school shootings that you hear about like this one, or last year there was Sandy Hook. School shootings are devastating and you always wonder about the people and how exactly the student obtained a gun and brought it to school in the first place. With newer security precautions like what you said, the cameras and the security, then maybe things like this would be noticed before anything bad happens. Also, i notice how some students today complain about the precaution of wearing hats and things like that, but it actually sort of is safer, cause you never know how a student would hide a gun.

    2. What are stricter gun laws going to do? These kids either buy them illegally or take them from there parents who are legal gun owners. I don't see a point in making guns harder to get when a lot of the people who misuse the guns aren't even legal gun owners. For the most part when kids get them we should look at the parents and see if they kept the firearms locked up so kids can't get to them. No matter what we do though in the end, tragedy like this will always occur because we always give the shooters what they want, and that's to be noticed and there voice is finally heard. Maybe if our country didn't portray if you shoot up a school or kill yourself then you become famous or a martyr. These people want to be heard and that's exactly what we are giving to them.

This article has and has not been a big deal for a while now, and that deal is of the government "spying" on people, or just simply being able to get phone communications or other things by phone. I knew that some people in the U.S. have been complaining about the N.S.A. spying on them, but I never imagined that our allies would be affected by this as well. This German woman says that the trust between the countries needs to be reestablished.
But with this N.S.A., i can see good out of it and bad. Obviously bad because people are saying how they do not have privacy anymore, but good because for the people that are "bad" then the government would know plans of things like these.

This is a video of a news anchor going on a rant against both parties in Congress. His view is that our representatives in both houses are bought by banks and businesses and are more interested in protecting their careers than in fixing anything. This was originally made when we were going through the the banking crisis and meltdown, but it applies equally to the current government shutdown behavior displayed by Congress. They have not learned anything in the time between these and continue to act more for their own self-interest than in the interest of fixing our country's financial problems.

    1. Watching this video the first thing I agreed on was that I don't want the financial burden that is coming down on all of us to be pasted down to my children and my grandchildren. Why should they, America's future, have to suffer because of what our government officials are doing to our government by constantly raising the debt ceiling. As for President Obama this is his second term. He doesn't need to worry about reelection that so many presidents worry about their first term. He can at least try to make a move by bypassing our corrupt Congress and ask the American citizens to support him in a changing bill that can potentially save our children from having a miserable economic future. If it backfires so what? You're done, your second term is up and you are heading out. If it does work you will be seen as someone who finally attempted to change this problem.

  7. I strongley agree with Dylan, They keep pushing it futher and futher away. Until someone steps up to change it , it will affect the future generation. They really havent learned anything . The president should be able to override congress. The exraction of money is huge . I believe that it is congress' fault , Both parties do need to realize this problem. I also believe it isnt just one guy, I think its up to the president and congress as well, the both need to step up & try and get us out of debt and stop pushing it off, Pushing it off will just make it worse in the future

I felt bad about how our presentation turned out for the class. So here is a bit of news from the Libertarian Party which we did our presentation on. This covered Robert Sarvis, who is running for governor of Virginia, and discusses how PAC (Political Action Committee) is supporting him but giving contributions so he can put out a campaign commercial which isn't commonly seen for 3rd parties. It also discusses how Sarvis appeals to both Republican and Democratic voters. A poll conducted in the state shows that about 59% of Virginians to see themselves as having common views as Sarvis.
