http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/14/us/flooding-colorado/index.html?hpt=us_c1 This article discusses the very recent and devastating flood in Colorado. It describes the conditions surrounding the flood. This ties into what we have been discussing in the different government interactions. Law enforcement has been responding towards this devastation as well as other local officials. The Governor says it will be a long and hard recovery. Hundreds have been rescued, a few have died, and many more are still missing.
This article talks about many fake bombs that have been placed around Staten Island. The people living on there have been terrified. The bomb hoaxes have caused store evacuations and multiple calls to 911 and required very sizable responses by the local police and fire departments. None of these bombs have actually been real, though. They haven't caused any physical harm.
I think the people placing these false bombs are definitely trying to scare those residents of Staten Island. Whether they are just playing around or just trying to get a reaction, I think everyone knows it's not right to do. I think people in Staten still need to have caution because if this happens again it could actually be real the next time.
I believe that the people placing the fake bombs in Staten Island are trying to terrify the people who live there. If this were happening close to us I too would be scared, its not just the fact that it could be a real bomb but about all the resources that are put forth for a bomb that is a fake.
Regardless as to whether or not the bombs are actually physically harming the people of Staten Island, it is pretty messed up that someone would do that. Even if it were a prank or something, it's not the kind of thing you should joke about, and if it's terrorizing the citizens then that's not cool. It's like yelling fire in a movie theatre. You just don't do that (partially because it's illegal, and also due in part to the fact that only colossal tools would do it). In short, these people placing these bombs around are colossal tools and they should be stopped.
When reading this, the one thing that was going through my head was why? Like Kaitlynn said, it is really horrible that someone in this world would place fake bombs just to scare people. Sure it did not cause any harm physically, but mentally, it probably caused these people to freak out like they never have before. I know i would freak out if i heard a bomb was near our area.
Well my first thought when I read that there was a similar second one is that someone could be trying to send a message out to the people. Whether it is something weird about their belief of 911 or that there is an actual planning of a bombing. It's just sick how someone has the hateful soul to put fright into those who are in such a dangerous place. Another big thing to think about is those who survived the actual 911 and what went through their mind. I just hope someone finds more out about it.
I think that it is good for the fire department and police department to still be on their toes and respond to every little threat because if they don't and it's a real threat then there could be major repercussions. It is a terrible thing to have everyone worrying about these bomb threats and I believe that it is some cruel joke by some people and I don't think that it is anything serious but it should be taking that way as to not let one slip.
This is a very dangerous stunt and whoever is putting these fake bombs out in public in a danger to the public. This person could be testing the positions of bombs and accuracy of where it is going to hit. One of the bombs one could be a real bomb instead of being fake. I don’t think this is some kind of prank I think it’s a real potential threat. The government needs to step in and put up surveillance. Whether this surveillance if from the local government with cops and sheriffs, either from the state with cameras or from the federal government with surveillance from federal agent it doesn’t matter it just needs to be done as soon as possible before something horrible happens.
Wether or not they are a physical threat to the people of Staten Island, causing panic can indeed cause mental or physical harm to the people. With all of these fake bomb threats, they have no idea when to consider which are real and if any of them are real. They have no choice as to treat them all as if they were real and this is just causing an unnecessary elevated awareness. I think the security will be heighted which will help this and maybe it will calm down.
This ariticle has to do with obamacare, and wether or not subsidies and income tax is illegal. As dave Camp said in his letter, isnt this double dipping? The obama adminisrtation is said to have ruled out this yet is thinking about other changes.
This is a great country where we have such strong freedom of speech that a newscaster can offer very pointed and harsh criticisms of the President. This news clip was powerful because I felt it based itself on facts and did not resort to emotional name calling or attacks like what happens so often in politics. She hits hard on the President's comment that his credibility is not on the line with the Syrian situation; claiming he has no credibility left to sacrifice. Using previous news clips where the President stated that the use of chemical weapons was a redline for him and crossing it would bring military consequences the reporter rebuts the President's current statements that he never established a redline and threatened military action against Syria. If he has changed his mind about American action in Syria based on better advice or hearing the will of the people being against it he should just say so. Claiming to never had said something when it is easily shown he did not only damages his credibility, it removes it. And having the protections of our Constitution's freedom of speech allows reporters to highlight politicians changing positions to whatever it needs to be at the moment instead of establishing a viewpoint and logically supporting it.
http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/09/17/20545458-gun-legislation-remains-stalled-after-washington-shootings?lite With the recent shootings at the "Navy Yard Massacre" gun control is once again popped its head into Congressional debates. There is a current amendment to the Constitution that is trying to be approved that will put a limit on the Second Amendment by requiring that all buyers of guns have a background check and a mental illness check before purchase. I believe this is a decent amendment because it will allow us to still enjoy our liberties under the Second Amendment but have reasonable limitations on it to prevent the killings of innocent people. On this amendment last voting for it to be pushed through it failed by only six votes, however after this shooting the amendment may gain supporters.
http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/09/13/20478394-colorado-floods-how-to-help This is just a simple little article about the Colorado floods and a way to help them. It reminded me of the small project if you may call it we did in class where we took local, state, and federal governments and put responses of them on 9/11, here it is instead about the floods. Although nothing is really listed about what each sector is doing it also names organizations that help such as the Red Cross and the Salvation Army. This line is directly from the article... "Local, national and state organizations are all teaming up to provide a range of services."
This definitely made me look at Marijuana in a different way. But, needless to say, marijuana is marijuana. You are still getting high with most of these new marijuana products. This could add to the weight problem of today's America. Being high makes you hungry already, now turning marijuana into drinks and snacks will only further our country's weight problem. Also, this wouldn't be used as medical marijuana. You can walk onto any California beach and asked if you have a cold and taken to a "special doctor" and they'll write you a prescription. There is a reason marijuana has been illegal for so long. It should stay that way. This too will lead to even more illegal growing and trafficking of drugs.
This article shows such a horrible decision made by the government of Louisiana. There is a brain eating amoeba in the water and the CDC is allowing people to drink it. The amoeba is not harmful if you swallow it, only if it goes up your nose. One boy has already died from this. The amoeba can be killed with chlorine, but the government is not adding chlorine to the water, they are letting it be. The only told the locals to not let it go up their noses. This is an outrageous, it puts such a strain on parents to watch their children. The government should be held accountable for anyone who passes away from this. They know it is in the water and they have yet to put sufficient amounts of chlorine in the water to kill it. The CDC is a national government run program and the national government should step up when they clearly already know there is a problem with the water.
I agree that the government should step up to kill the amoeba. I think the state government should handle the situation by adding chlorine to kill this amoeba before it gets serious and more people start to get hurt, I see this as a classic example of "Rather be safe than sorry." If more people were to get hurt it could escalate into an ugly pointing the finger fight at whose fault it is.
I also agree with this. The government is not doing anything to provent the amoeba spread and the CDC allowing it to get through the water is just horrible. You would think that something as dangerous, especially to a whole community, as this would raise immediate action to contain it. Instead, they are doing nothing. I think that they really should handle this situation, though it should have been handled immediately.
It is such a sad thing that we have experienced yet another mass shooting by someone who should have been screened and prevented from having guns. The former Naval Reservist who went on the shooting spree had a history of violent behavior and mental illness. I believe in our right to own firearms, however, when someone develops a history of violent behavior, that should be when a more complete background check is done before issuing a gun permit. A better screening process for security clearances may have prevented him from having access to the buildings where he was able to shoot so many people in a short time. Sometimes it is hard to believe that our government is capable of protecting us from terrorist threats if they can't even do a good job screening out our own disturbed individuals and keeping them from security clearances and guns. This seems to be a huge failure of our bureaucracy.
Why can't anyone connect the dots that less guns means less shootings? I'm all for the right to guns, seriously though. More gun restriction equals more safety for the people of the United States which equals less death which equals less problems always. I wish that our politicians could do math like I can. I'm the break-dancing hip-hop political mathematician sensation. Say no to drugs
I'm not saying Lea is wrong but i feel that even if they do put up more gun restrictions there will be those people that will find a way of getting guns and those are the kind of people we don't want having guns. Also there will also be those people that sell them which just makes having more restrictions dumb in a way. Lea on the other hand does have a point when she said "More gun restriction equals more safety for the people of the United States which equals less death which equals less problems always."
I actually watched this episode on 60 Minutes and to me I think the whole story is a waste of time. I am not a big fan of marijuana and especially the state government making it legal for an average person to recreationally use it upsets me. It seems that the state government is not worried about the health of its citizen. All they care about is the tax revenue that they are going to be receiving which is completely wrong because marijuana is supposed to be as dangerous as heroin when used often enough and long enough. For the state to make this legal to its state citizens it’s illegal on the federal level and the federal government didn’t seem that concerned. They just let the state go ahead and make it legal. They are just waiting for the right time to jump in on the tax revenue that the sales will be bringing
I agree with Emelia. Marijuana should not be allowed to become legal for recreational use. There are actual scientific studies on the ingredients of marijuana and they are even worse than cigarettes! They contain more than sixty lethal chemicals. It slows reaction time and does kill brain cells. This doesn't seem like the federal government cares about its citizens. The war on marijuana may not be as important as the war on cocaine, but it is still important and should not be pushed aside.
I could easily compare marijuana to alcohol in terms of legality (and also because I really don't like either of them). With prohibition, alcohol was illegal yet still entirely obtainable. We're like that with marijuana right now. Alcohol is a substance that, despite all of it's risks, is still sold. I think the reason why marijuana isn't legal is because it's something that can be home grown. Once the big industries find ways to capitalize and regulate the sales of marijuana I'm sure the government won't be so reluctant to legalize it.
I watched some of this the other night. I think it a great thing that they are coming up with new medicines and new ways to help people. I don't think they should use marijuana though because people will have more demands for it. I honestly am not a big fan of marijuana but I think that if they are going to use it for medicines , then why not just legalize it? People are still going to use it no matter what.
I have a bad feeling that people are going to still over use this kind of marijuana, just like people misuse or overuse it from smoking it. Even though these people are putting it in food or drink, it does not make it less illegal. These people did start out with a good idea to try and help people out, but i have a feeling this is going to turn bad one way or another.
Colorado Is setting their selves up right now with this... The way I see this is that the things happening with this is giving a path to drug trafficking all through out the U.S.. Any Big Dealer out there watching this is finding a way to get ahold of product and forging symbols to sell actual non-medical marijuana trying to pass it off as a 'legal' product.
I honestly don't have a problem with the recreational use of marijuana. The way I see it is that I've never heard of someone dying from a pot overdose. I think that the major problem with the legalization of marijuana is that the fed can't tax on all of that weed yet. I'll point y'all in the direction of this: Portugal has legalized all drug usage and their drug abuse rates have been cut in half. http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2011/07/05/ten-years-after-decriminalization-drug-abuse-down-by-half-in-portugal/ I'm definitely not condoning drug usage in any way but I think that perhaps that we have been looking at the "war on drugs" or drug abuse in the United States the wrong way. I'm definitely not saying we should shove all of the drug addicts of the US into the slammer and cross our fingers and spend way more money than we should on this war. Is it just me or do we really like declaring war on things?
I feel that if the state governments firmly believe that legalizing marijuana can be of a positive difference in the state then they should go for it. On the other hand I could see legalizing it also getting out of hand and it would be abused and hard to control. I personally am against it for general use, but I also see the positive ways it can be used, like for medical reasons.
http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/17/us/navy-yard-shooting-military-contractors/index.html On Monday, Aaron Alexis killed twelve Navy officers at the Washington Naval Base. He had security clearance from his early service in the Navy. The government knew about his past run-ins with the law and still allowed him clearance. They had to of known about his past with guns. They allowed him to have security clearance anyway. This aggravates me because the government knew about his mental illness and violent tendencies and still allowed him to be on base. That decision cost us twelve naval officers.
Twelve U.S. Navy officers wee killed because of huge government mistake. This man been arrested many times and he had charges against him while he was in the service multiple times without much disciplinary action. He had a background of having mental illness and the government knew about this. Along with theses violent combinations he had had legal mishaps with the misuse of guns. Despite all these major red flags the government still gave him security clearance into military bases. When contracting him they did not do a proper and thorough background check which should be more than protocol when issuing clearance. This careless mistake cost 12 people their lives simply because no one wanted to take the time to their jobs properly. It is ironic that the government things they need to take action to control and keep in line the Syrian government when they cant even do their job correctly here on own land.
i would never use marijuana or any product that contains it, there are many more natural sources than weed. Weed becomes an addiction and i would rather deal with whatever pain im in than become an addict. My dad was an alcoholic and i know what that does to you. i dont want to end up like that. i am proud to say that ive never smoked weed, or anything for that matter. i dont think that its right for the government to legalize it. this is going to just create more addictions around the state.
I personally believe that the use of medical marijuana or for recreation should be legalized, honestly it seems to me that it is very good at pain relieve and seems less likely for people to get addicted to and for them to overdose like they do on Oxycontin. I think that it makes it even more reliable if you take out the thc in it. You don't even have to worry about the addictive effect or the tar, with how they are infusing it with other thinks. You don't have to deal with the smoke or the pipes and bongs.
I think that the states should have the right to make marijuana legal for medical and recreational use. There have been plenty of studies and research proving that marijuana has medical benefits and can help with many medical issues. The main reasons it is illegal is because it is widely abused like many other drugs and the government cant make sure all of it gets taxed. Like Lea said no one has ever overdosed on solely marijuana because it is not lethal, along with her example of how it being legalized in other countries and their drug abuse rates have decreased substantially. Making marijuana legal would bring in a lot of revenue for states along with jobs and would be very beneficial to the people who use need it medically. It doesn't make sense to me that alcohol is legal for recreation and has probably caused more deaths and accidents than marijuana has but it being legal hasn't been questions in decades.
i saw this on Abc6 and think it is an amazing idea. People who live in the short north and need to get to franklinton and doesnt want to ride their bike there cause they work and live all around the short noth can easily rent a electric car and get to Franklinton. it is an amazing advancement in technology in Columbus. i am proud to say that i live in the city where you can rent electric cars and have free parking with them.
There is no doubt that this may have really changed the way people look at medical marijuana. I myself was surprised that they actually came up with ways that did not include lighting up anything and puffing smoke. Yeah i guess they could be less harmful but no matter how they change it, I will always look at marijuana as a drug.
In my opinion this is just another one of those campaigns rallying support for the legalization of marijuana. Now that doesn't mean I'm in opposition to the legalization, no. I'm in support for the legalization of marijuana based on the fact that there are plenty of other drugs that do considerable amounts of damage to the human body, whereas marijuana doesn't do much to hinder the human body's performance. Now the issue I have with adding marijuana to consumer products is that said products may be marketed to the wrong crowds, and instead of getting in the hands of those who have handled and used marijuana in the past, will end up in the hands of kids from the younger generation, and they won't know what to do with it. Also, the marijuana-infused products are much easier to disguise than marijuana itself. That will allow people, mainly kids, to just walk around with drugs on the person, and literally no one would be the wiser.
i dont see a problem with any of this, let the feds tax it and make tons of money from and legalize it, Cant go wrong with that. a lot of those things they are making seem pretty cool and helpful. We cant just let people get these and binge out of course, but i would rather people be using these than popping oxys or other pain relievers. also on a side not drinking a elixir sounds pretty sweet.

ReplyDeleteI watched some of this the other night.
ReplyDeleteI have a bad feeling that people are going to still over use this kind of marijuana, just like people misuse or overuse it from smoking it. Even though these people are putting it in food or drink, it does not make it less illegal. These people did start out with a good idea to try and help people out, but i have a feeling this is going to turn bad one way or another.

ReplyDeleteColorado Is setting their selves up right now with this... The way I see this is that the things happening with this is giving a path to drug trafficking all through out the U.S.. Any Big Dealer out there watching this is finding a way to get ahold of product and forging symbols to sell actual non-medical marijuana trying to pass it off as a 'legal' product.
ReplyDeleteI honestly don't have a problem with the recreational use of marijuana.
ReplyDeleteI feel that if the state governments firmly believe that legalizing marijuana can be of a positive difference in the state then they should go for it. On the other hand I could see legalizing it also getting out of hand and it would be abused and hard to control. I personally am against it for general use, but I also see the positive ways it can be used, like for medical reasons.

ReplyDeleteOn Monday, Aaron Alexis killed twelve Navy officers at the Washington Naval Base.
Deletei would never use marijuana or any product that contains it, there are many more natural sources than weed.
ReplyDeleteI personally believe that the use of medical marijuana or for recreation should be legalized, honestly it seems to me that it is very good at pain relieve and seems less likely for people to get addicted to and for them to overdose like they do on Oxycontin. I think that it makes it even more reliable if you take out the thc in it. You don't even have to worry about the addictive effect or the tar, with how they are infusing it with other thinks. You don't have to deal with the smoke or the pipes and bongs.

DeleteI think that the states should have the right to make marijuana legal for medical and recreational use.

ReplyDeletei saw this on Abc6 and think it is an amazing idea.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion this is just another one of those campaigns rallying support for the legalization of marijuana.
ReplyDeletei dont see a problem with any of this, let the feds tax it and make tons of money from and legalize it, Cant go wrong with that. a lot of those things they are making seem pretty cool and helpful. We cant just let people get these and binge out of course, but i would rather people be using these than popping oxys or other pain relievers. also on a side not drinking a elixir sounds pretty sweet.
