Week 2 Blog Posts-

Please post your posts for the week of Aug 29th-Sept 4th here.

Here's an article to get things rolling....

fantasy football...and politics??

  1. Ahh, football. I love my football but I am only a watcher so I don't have even the basic knowledge of fantasy football. Although by asking Nick I could learn a lot about it. Anyways, government. I see that government has to regulate to gambling that is associated along with it just as they do in casinos. My big problem is with the websites that still promote the use of fantasy football leagues when in certain states that is illegal. Those websites should either work with the state or back away if what they are doing could cause a person to run into trouble with the law.

  2. First off, I am not a huge football fan. There are too many rules and regulations and I can barely keep the two teams apart. I knew fantasy football leagues are a huge deal, but I didn't know how huge! Knowing that there are certain restrictions in certain states shows me that this is some serious stuff! I think it's interesting that even Yahoo! has a part in rewarding those with the best fantasy football teams although it may be illegal in Florida. It's also interesting how you sometimes have to pay a fee to even submit your choosing! Go team!

  3. I'm not really into fantasy football or anything, but I honestly don't see why this should have to violate any laws. This isn't even relevant to most people until it's in season, so why should it be such a huge deal? People are having fun with something. If they want to bet their money, they should be allowed to. Besides, unlike casinos, where you can go and gamble whenever, this isn't an all-year thing.

    1. except that they have these same fantasy leagues for every sport...so it does go year round ;)

  4. Even though I have attended every football game since the beginning of my Freshman year at Westland High School, I do not know ANYTHING about football. To me, football is just a game, where sweaty guys tackle each other and try to run across the field. I have also gotten this impression from any team playing football. Fantasy football is a very popular game today, and no matter what, people are going to do anything they can to play it. A chance to win a lot of money just by betting on certain players can be a very big deal to one person and not a big deal to another. I think that if state governments continue to ban this game, a similar situation will arise to that of when drink alcohol was illegal. Yes, Prohibition was a national law, however, this took away something that people loved and continued to do despite it was illegal for awhile. People will always play fantasy sport games, whether it is legal or not, they will just be more cautious about it.

  5. This is a different article, but this is where I am posting it.
    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013/09/03/sen-mccain-caught-playing-iphone-poker-game-during-senate-hearing-on-syria/
I was searching through articles this afternoon hoping that I would come across one that was interesting enough to write 50 words. Sen. McCain was caught playing a poker game on his iPhone during a meeting to discuss whether or not forces should be sent to Syria. As soon as I read this article, I thought of the actor who got in a lot of trouble for having his phone out on a plane when they were supposed to be away. Now yes, that rule is held strict to ensure that the plane does not malfunction due to other technology applications going at the same time, however, wouldnt one think that having a phone out during an important meeting in our government would be a big deal? Any thoughts, please share, however, I think that this is kind of a big deal that a Senator can disregard an important task for a poker game, even if it is a 3-hour long meeting.

    1. I don't know if this counts as a blog. But I did just follow up on this article you posted up and honestly it's kind of funny to think that Senator McCain could have easily found this mistake to be amusing. On the link that will show up there is an actual video of a live news broadcast where they asked McCain about it and talked about how he got bored and how he lost thousands of dollars, then clearing that it was play money he had lost. It's just weird to think that these kinds of people get chosen into these kinds of things. Shows that he's becoming weak, when we need strength, especially for this Syria .
TAKE A LOOK AT THE VIDEO FOR YOURSELF.

    2. This is one of the most important debates he will have and considering he has been calling for the rebels to be armed for around 18 months, you'd think he would be greatfull for that they are discussing the potential use of force against Assad. I understand that its a three hour meeting but that doesn't mean you can slack off and not pay attention. It's his job and if he is going to properly be part of our government, he should be using those three hours wisely instead of playing poker.

    3. I can understand that it looks really bad on McCain's part to be playing games while in a meeting of such importance, but in my opinion, it doesn't need to become a big deal. I try to picture myself in his position and I can understand why he would be on his phone, some of the people in those meetings go up there and say the same things over and over again for a long time. I'm not saying what he did was right, but I don't think that it needs to become a huge problem. He made a mistake, we all do, so unless it becomes a reappearing problem, I think he should be left to learn from his own mistakes.

    4. Students can get in trouble if we text a friend about where to meet after school or sometimes if we use a phone to take pictures of assignments on the board. But a Senator who is supposed to be guiding the course of our country and involved in decisions that could cost Syrians and Americans their lives thinks its OK to play poker on his phone. I can understand that he might be bored with some very long meetings but he has the power to shorten those or have people make their points and move on to other issues. Playing games while deciding important national issues seems to reflect a poor attitude towards what is important.

    5. i agree with john. Are we really going to bash on him when we sit in all our classes mostly texting or having our phone out in some way? What he is only human. Who is going to sit attentively for a whole 3 hour meeting, when we can barely do it with a 45 minute class period? Cut the man some slack and think about what you would do after 3 hours of probably the same thing being regurgitated over and over.

  6. Even before reading this article the tittle just looks like something that the government shouldn’t be getting involved in but once again the American government is sticking their noses where it does not belong. Fantasy football is not real!! People are not putting the players they pick to be on their fantasy football team on a real field to play a real game. Fantasy football is based on stats. This just sound like the government finding new ways to make money and this is by taxing the people who participate in fantasy football. I understand that fantasy football is gambling and states have regulations and laws about gambling but Florida banning it and others trying to tax is just going over board

I heard about this story and I 100% believe that these U.S ambassadors were spying on Brazil and Mexico. I am not one of those people that blame everything that is wrong with my life on the government but this sounds like something the U.S government would do. I feel like the U.S government likes to be on top and they will do anything and everything to stay up there. They spied on Brazil and Mexico for irrelevant information. They wanted to know who the people had picked to be president and this in my opinion is useless.

    1. I think that the allegations are most likely true, but I also believe that espionage is not a favorable thing, but it is a thing that happens and has happened for ever. I think that it should be a big deal for Mexico and Brazil, but honestly the people of America shouldn't be that surprised or appalled because we've had spy's and other ways of espionage all through out our history. Look way back at the civil war they had spy's then, and I bet you that we've had spy's during times of peace before and it's not going to be the last time. The government believes they need to know what other country's are doing, I'm not saying its right but it seems to be the case.

  8. Honestly, football is of no interest to me. Sports? In my mind is boring as can be, other than hanging out with your friends watching it. Even for me it is easy to see how the government is getting a little bit to involved in our lives. Gambling on football, i just dont see how it affects anyone so much that it should be banned. Football is meant to be a sport, a way to pass time and have fun doing something you love, so the bets on it shouldnt be banned by the govenrment. Its a game all itself, how they pass their time without actually participating.

This article is a update on Ariel Castro, the man who abducted and held woman captive. I feel that Castro committing suicide, doesnt do the women he raped the justice they deserve. The amount of time and horror he had those wemon, and his few short months in Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction doesn't make things right. he got off so easy, being able to make the final act and not live with what he had done.

  10. Futbol!! I'm more of a soccer fan than I am a football fan. But I see the issue with the gambling, The other day I caught myself talking with a man at a car dealership about how all these people have gone and asked for more money at their jobs or have quit their jobs thinking they could go gamble at the casino and win money when all they are doing is losing more than they could afford. The government is just trying to prevent more things like this from happening, now I know its just NFL and its only seasonal but what comes next only God knows. Personally I have no care since I don't understand the point of paying money to win money.

  11. Me being a football player myself, i love the game of football. It seems really weird to me that the government would be getting involved in something like this game. I know it is a big game in the country but, if people want to lose or in the little chance win some money by gambling at this, it seems that there should not be any reason to stop it, cause once they lose a lot of their money, they'll learn. I am not a big gambling fan.

  12. http://news.yahoo.com/us-airstrikes-syria-lead-american-boots-ground-125600085.html

I know Syria was sort of last weeks blog, but the headline of this article really caught my attention. This article is asking if the airstrike bombing on Syria will be enough, if it is not then some people are thinking of getting the troops out there. I am really sure that these airstrikes will not be enough, but i do not think sending the troops out there is a good idea yet. This idea would risk a whole bunch of things for the country and/or the people of the US, or even the country of Syria.

  13. I dont really like sports. I think if people want to gamble over football let them, if they lose they will learn. I mean its kinda the same as gambling at casinos only your money is not going to the casinos. I think government should just stay out of it , they have better things to worry about. Everyone loves football, weather its legal or illegal I think people would still do it.

  14. The article is pretty interesting. Fantasy football is very popular and IS technically gambling when involved with money. I think the problem here lies within the people and not with the government or the websites, except for when they are directly endorsing it in specific states. The thing with people is that, even if it is a law, and something as "minor" as this, it would be considered, would be mostly ignored. It is really unacceptable that the companies are endorsing it in the state directly though. I am lenient with the website as it also follows with the users willingness to break the law. Websites really can not be responsible for much of it either. Their web host could be anywhere in the world, including outside of those states where it is legal, which it must follow country rules and state rules, provided they are in the United States. If the host is set outside of our country, there is not much jurisdiction over it.

  15. http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/04/health/babble-twins-ivf-multiples/index.html?hpt=hp_c3
This article is very interesting. It is about a couple who uses in vitro fertilization to become pregnant. The try is a success and she becomes pregnant with twins. The parents were mad because they did not want multiple children. I think they are wrong to be upset. The doctor explained to them that they could end up with multiple pregnancies or none at all. All was explained to them and they should not have been playing god in the first place. If they weren't meant to have children then they weren't meant to have children. You can't all of a sudden get mad when you get more than you bargained for. Besides, children are a blessing. Obviously she couldn't get pregnant for a reason, so the fact that she could even get pregnant at all was a miracle.

  16. http://www.cnn.com/2013/08/28/world/asia/india-child-hydrocephalus/index.html?hpt=wo_mid
This really caught my attention. This little child has a condition that makes her head grow incredibly large because it is full of too much fluid. Her family having no money couldn't do anything about it. Money was finally raised and she was able to have a surgery to reduce the size. My thought on this is, why are her parents earning so little? Why is the government not helping a child who cannot lift their head? Her father is only paid $3. Why did it take so long for a child to get the help she needed. I think these third world countries need a change in government and support. Here in America there are charities that provide surgeries for children with these conditions. Why is there none in Asia? No child should have to suffer medically because her family does not have money.

  17. This article was really interesting to me because I didn't think that petty fantasy football gambling would have so much controversy. In my opinion government should be concentrated on more important political issues rather than gambling. If the state government is so worried about this then they should have clearer laws stating exactly what is illegal with this kind of gambling. I personally think that fantasy football should be legal in all states because it isn't really hurting anyone like most other things that are illegal do. Yes it is an issue because taxes are not being paid on the money won when they should be more concerned with spending the money they already have on something that will benefit the citizens.

  18. Sports are important to me but I do not think that the government should be getting involved on something that isn't causing the country serious problems. I think that if the government tries to ban fantasy football or make regulations, people who are serious about it, will start to protest and it will cause more problems for the government than it will as it is.

  19. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-250_162-57601386/senate-committee-approves-military-action-in-syria/

This article is about the Senate committee passing the motion to send troops into Syria to for a military campaign against the Syrian military forces. I think that that the history our country has had with sticking our noses in problems that aren't any of our business should show us that interfering with Syria isn't a good idea. We, as a country, feel like its out job to "police" the whole world which has caused us more problems that we don't need. Unless Syria or any other government or group is threatening the country and our citizens well being i don't think we need to get involved with conflicts in other countries.

  20. Fantasy football was created for the people who love the NFL. They get to make their "teams" and choose their players. They get to play against their friends and family. There is an entry fee and it actually isn't that high. Fantasy football is based on skill, not chance.

  21. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-250_162-57601381/feds-wont-enforce-ban-on-veterans-same-sex-benefits/
This article is about how the government isn't going to enforce the ban on same-sex marriage benefits, on the veterans. They say that the veteran papers only say spouse and can mean any type of relationship. So veterans can file for federal taxes as married. Regular people though, do have the ban enforced. The Defense Marriage Act implies a heterosexual relationship, not a same-sex relationship. This is wrong because they are favoriting veterans over normal people. It's not right because you can't say it's okay for one group and not another because of one small word.

  22. I believe that it shouldn't be banned, but it should be protected under the same law that online poker is protected under. It is in the essence the same, you are gambling online against other people. It should not be banned, and it is just for fun people don't try to make a job out of it and they don't try to do anything too crazy. They just wanna have fun and earn a few extra bucks, what's the problem with that. At the very most they should just make it more easily taxable rather than ban it, because that's what their after is money, it's always for money.

  23. I think that the states that are trying to ban fantasy football leagues and their prizes are being overly restrictive. Bets between friends and coworkers have always gone on and would also be considered illegal gambling if we followed these laws. A school office pool on who will win the next OSU games would be considered illegal gambling. I think that the states should focus these laws on commercial level gambling tht is run as s business to make money. It should not use these laws to try target fans enjoying gaming and fun essentially between themselves. The laws have not kept up with the growth of the internet and how our society operates today.

I honestly think it would be much smarter for out government to try to settle the problems in Syria with talking to the Russia representatives from each country to settle this underlying conflict before it turns into war and bloodshed. The problem with Russia is that we blamed them for giving arms to the Assad regime during the civil war. Boehner tuned down an excellent opportunity to talk this out with Putin before things could possibly get out of hand and we are plunged into another deadly and costly war.

Honestly, that is a great idea. It would be a lot more smarter for our government to try to settle the problem, rather than starting another horrible, costly war. I don't understand why people, like Obama and the leader of Syria, would want to fight. Honestly if I were a leader of a country, I would try my hardest to try to make agreements with other Countries, instead of always trying to start conflict and wars between thy neighbors.

  25. i don't really see fantasy football as gambling, especially when people aren't putting as much chance to it as they are using statistics and strategy to further themselves. That's just like playing any kind of strategy game, or being in a tournament for a game with a cash prize at the end.

  26. I don't really see fantasy football as a gambling issue. Yes people might be betting money but they aren't risking everything they own like people do with casinos. But if it was to become an even bigger issue and states that aren't legal with having gambling and casinos then thats when we should worry about it. Maybe this is just another way that the government wants to get another way to tax us.

This article is about how President Obama is still debating on going on with the war into syria. The senate is the only people that have to vote on it. I think they should let it go and get all of our troops home already. The sand war just ended like 6-9 months ago and America wants to get involved into another war. But yet America wonders why we are in so much debt?

  28. I know some people that play fantasy football here in Ohio. I honestly don't think that people should get introuble for basically having some fun. I mean it is a good idea for them to have to pay a fee to join in and participate, but people should not get introuble at all. I honestly don't think it is considered gambling at all. I feel like it is just like a video game, or just like an app that you would download on your smart phone. No harm to anyone, but I also think that it is a wonderful thing that people have to tell the IRS how much they won.

  29. This article is kind-of a joke to me. I don't consider fantasy football in any way, shape, or form, gambling. There's no money that you have to invest to play (To my knowledge at least.), and there's no worry of losing huge if your drafted team does poorly (Again, to my knowledge.). Fantasy football originated as a fun way for football fans to get more involved with how their favorite football players were doing, and, in a sense, play Madden without a gaming console. The fact that it's evolved into this threat of gambling that the government feels it needs to regulate on a local and state level is idiotic. Let men and women toss together their NFL dream team and compete with eachother without the government breathing down their necks.
